Merchandise, food, souveniers etc. are NOT the basis of income for the Disney company lol. Yes, they do pile in the dollars this way, but that is because the mouse felt he was living in the poor house lol. Disney is very promotional and can well afford to pay the bills. Disney is a HUGE chain...not just Disney World. The Disney company pays for Disney things...Disneyland in CA isn't a separate thing...you could almost say they pool the money...persay. With the Disney channel, Disney theme parks, Disney games, and well, the entire Disney company, enough money is grossed to EASILY pay for bills and CMs and what not.
If WDW only used the money they recieved from in the park...it would essentially make them separated from the Disney company...which is evidently untrue.
The Disney company is one of the largest in the world! They are in NO way "hurting" for money or desperate to pay for the necessities.
The merchandise at Disney World is really just their way of obtaining "pocket-money". The question is, do you think we are giving too much money to the mouse? It is okay to think that $20 for something really worth $10 IS overpriced because that extra $10 isn't paying for the electric bill, the CM paycheck, the sprinklers or anything else like that. Eventually it could be said that it does as it becomes part of this chain reaction. Really, Disney is far above the ability to pay for the bills as well as the extra things and that is where all this extra money goes.
In my opinion, Disney World is overpriced...(it is all worth it) but hey...they must be doing something right because with a Magic Kingdom that often times occupies well over 40,000 guests, I don't think many people harp on the prices so much...otherwise they wouldn't go. There is magic in it for everyone, even if that "magic" for some is raking in the $$.
If Disney World was underpriced...we would sure as heck know it.
