Is Disney "missing the boat" by not having a webcam at Castaway Cay.

I know there are hundreds of other DCL fans that love to look at the Port Canaveral webcam, watching the ships depart or just sitting at the terminal. (How about three last week?!). I would love to be able to grab a live glance of Castaway now and then. It would probably have to be a automatically moving camera like the one for Paradise Island on Nassau, so it would rotate from seeing the docked ship to views of the beach. And of course not be able to zoom in as it shouldn't show too much detail. But properly done, as I know Disney could, I would think it would promote cruise sales at a small cost. Thoughts?

Seems to me it wouldn't be Disney that would do it. It's a Bahamian island. Maybe they don't want the expense of it, or the upkeep necessary. Or think it's something that will bring in the money.

The logistics of having a streaming webcam from Castaway Cay is virtually impossible, since the island has no hard wired telecommunication facility. Their contact is via Satellite, which is massively expensive and not reliable for such things as streaming video/audio. It just isn't practical for DCL to offer something like this, the video that is circulating from the Magic's "send off" from Castaway Cay was uploaded by a cast member after he was aboard the Magic, where the crew has access to the internet via the ship's satellite system which is more robust and online continuously while at sea.

I remember reading a few years ago that Disney didn't want any Webcams in the parks or CC for privacy reasons.

You are not the first to wonder this.....I understand the limitations of having a webcam at CC, but for the last decade I was hoping they would get one!

Cast members have access to DCL internet via satellite on the island bit they also use BTC while on or near the island so if DCL wanted a webcam they would get one and it wouldn't cost the earth.


The cast member most likely uploaded the farewell video from the island, considering they filmed the Magic leaving ;-)

It's my belief that they won't get a webcam or entertain the idea as it'll reduce from the exclusivity of Castaway Cay.

I think it is part of Disney's general rule not to show pictures before or after closing time. When the ship has left the island, it is probably considered like a park after closing time.
And it is probably not worth it to have of on only a few times a week from 8 to 5.

The cell tower on CC is linked to the nearby island, next time you're there you can see the circular antennas pointing to it. Similar things happen in remote and rural areas where it's too expensive to lay a hard telecommunications line.

90% of the time the cam would be of the empty dock. At most 3 itineraries dock there a week

If you're watching the cam on a beautiful day and it makes you crave a day at CC, enough to book a cruise, I'd say that's bringing in money. I don't even need to see people there in order to envision myself there.

This is the thought that prompted my post.
Next best thing is to watch Youtube videos.
