Is Disney Insurance worth it?

We purchased insurance through the cruiseline last year but for a trip to the Caribbean we have planned for June I purchased it online from Travel Guard. I'm sure if you checked with Travel Guard, Access America and some of the others you would find that they are cheaper than the Disney insurance. Our insurance through travelguard.com cost just $166 for $6000 in non-reimbursable expenses which is very cheap IMO for the peace of mind it gives for unexpected weather delays, medical emergencies, etc.

When you check what Disney's insurance covers versus what it doesn't, I think you'll see that it's not that good. InsureMyTrip.com or many of the other insurance packages are better...

Thanks for your replies! I know the Disney insurance is convienent, but I will have to look into some of the other companies. :scratchin

I never take out the insurance, I had a trip planned for March and less then 24 hours before we were leaving we had a medical emergency, I called and told them we were not going to make it, he asked when I wanted to go, I picked new dates and actually saved 400.00 because we were out of peak season. There were no problems changing anything without the insurance....

This is an example of why one doesn't always need to buy insurance - it all depends on how much of your trip is refundable vs non refundable or whether or not travel dates can be changed without penalty even at the last minute. We're going to the caribbean in June and there is a large amount of non-refundable money tied up in our accommodations. We can't just cancel or change dates without penalty like at WDW so for this trip it's a necessity. We went to WDW last May without insurance because I knew we could cancel our accomodations without penalty and get credit from SW for future travel so it really depends on the situation.

If you feel you will need insurance, check with insuremytrip.com for comparison of policies. We used Travelex for our trip to Mexico this summer as the resort is non-refundable and we wanted the medical and luggage coverage.

We don't get insurance for Disney, and we travel during hurricane season every year. The insurance is $119, and we would lose our $200 deposit (or so they say, not sure what would really happen if they were having a hurricane and we couldn't come). If our airline doesn't fly, we get a refund or credit. We have health insurance for emergencies, and car insurance for renting a car.

I asked Disney the name & number of the insurance provider. I called and was not thrilled to hear what they covered. THere is another link floating around that has more info on it. SOmeone posted the link to the travel insurance that says what they do/don't cover.

Remember if booking through Disney their cancellation policy is 45 days-7 days $100 penalty. 6-0 days $200 penalty. THat is per reservation. So it would cost you $120 for the insurance for 2 adults, but you only stand to loose $200 max.

They do not cover hurricaines unless you are being evacuated. And re: Medical they have a pre exisiting clause written in.

Please know what you are buying, before you buy!! You can always call disney and get the number for the insurance and call with specifics...
