Is "crap" a curse word?

I was raised to believe that it's kind of tacky. Definitely not something I'd say in polite company.

Considering that is my parent's swear word and you knew they were pretty riled up if you heard that come out of their mouth. Yep...it has the same effect on me that any of the other swear words would & I don't like the kids to say it.

I probably wouldn't say anything to someone else saying it in front of my kid's though but then again a *lot* of words that I grew up with as swear words are said now on TV routinely and you never, ever, ever heard them on TV when I was growing up. I still consider those bad language even if they are on the TV and not bleeped out.

No way! To call stuff like that a curse word takes away the definition from real bad words. How would anybody know if something had real bad words in it or just words like crap, hell, and damn?

It's not a nice word (or a word that kids (especially under 10)) should be using IMO. "Shoot" or "Darn" is much better.

That just doesn't make sense. What do those words mean if not the same thing as damn and crap?

It may not make sense. I just don't like the words "damn" or "crap" whereas I don't mind the words "shoot" or "darn". I don't know why. They just sound nicer to me I guess:rotfl:

No, I really don't think it is. Although I don't allow my 6 yr old to say it, as I know that some people think it's not appropriate.

What I want to know is what is a "curse" word anyway? Who determined what words were "bad" and why are they bad?

Good question. The other odd thing is TV and the other supposed "clean" media outlets let bad words in other languages get aired all the time. How does thta make sense? People might not know what it means so it's OK?

When im with younger members of the family, i try to limit my swearing to words that have been used in The Simpsons! :happytv:

Theres plenty of them, and there none too horrific :thumbsup2

I'll give you the same answer I have given my 5 year old: "It's not a bad word and I don't give a crap if you say it, but don't say it at school because some people care and I don't want to be called in." :lmao:

This is exactly what I told my child.

It's not a curse word, but it does fall in the category of words (things like crap and sucks) I didn't want to hear coming out of my daughter's mouth when she was little - the thought just made me feel icky, so we didn't use them back then.

Now, when she got to be a teenager, she was basically the one who reintroduced them to the house! :rotfl2:

When DD was 5 she loved the word 'stupid'. Everything and everyone was 'stupid' when she wasn't getting her way. I have a little problem with my 5 year old calling me stupid so we made it a bad word in our house. and would wash out her mouth with baby soap whenever she used it.......she only said it a couple of times after that. For the longest time afterward, when she would hear that word, she would say 'ummm so and so said a bad word'.:lmao: Then I had to teach her there were some acceptable times to say it....what a pain. Part of me thinks I should ahve come up with some other solution:confused3 .
I don't like my kids to use words like damn, crap, sucks, and a couple others.......oh and I don't like to hear the word fart....I don't know why. They are not actually forbidden words, but I would rather not hear my kids saying them.:rolleyes1 ....yes, I'm crazy I know.

Better than the alternative s-word. My kids use poop...is it better than crap? Don't know.

But if everyone knows that crap is the same as the s four letter word then where is the difference, they are both slang words for faeces?

I don't think this is an area where pure logic works. In my mind, poop is ok for little kids, and crap is not, and that's just the way it is, logical or not. :rotfl:

I feel like a horrible mother! My 4 year old says crap, dang it, stupid, and sucks. It's better than the real curse words. She doesn't walk around saying these words all the time, she just won't get in trouble if she says them. She has 8 & 10 year old cousins who aren't allowed to say any of these words. They can't even say "cool":confused3 If someone says stupid around them, they say..."OH, he said the S word!" The only thing we don't say is fart, we say piffle!

great answer!!!!

it isn't a swear word in our house - I guess we see it as preferable to what it is replacing!!!!:rotfl: I understand it bothers others so try not to use it out loud in public - and try to discourage DD9 from using it.

I really don't like "sucks" though - although I am a little two faced about it - if it is used to joke I dislike it less than when it is used in a more negative connotation.....not good, I guess!
