Is Coronavirus affecting your travel plans?

I suppose there is a REMOTE possibility that municipal water supplies could be compromised by a malfunction and if enough workers were sick at the same time, there could be a disruption. I posted this on one of the threads somewhere. We operate very leanly in our City, with a total of 5 employees operating our water AND sewer system, for a town of 12K people. Now, it's mainly self-operating, but tests are required for health and safety of water, and there are always alarms going off which must be addressed, etc. If too many of those 5 were out at the same time, we could be in a real pickle pretty quickly. I actually raised this issue with our City, and it's causing us to work on contingency plans. It's a REMOTE possibility, not something that falls into the "likely" scenario. I am not stocking up on water.

I realize this is probably really dumb but I am ok with that. I have seen a lot of people buying A LOT of water. Our Costco had a limit of 5 per customer, our one grocery store already sold out once this week of bottled water.
My question is - why? I understand getting things to stock up in the event that you need to quarantine, stay home etc - but - is the water we already have coming out of the faucet getting filtered, going somewhere? Am I missing some connection to water that would lead to it being contaminated in some way? I have seen runs on water when we're about to get bad winter storms because there's a concern about loss of power/electricity. Why is everyone buying water for Coronovirus preparedness? I'm convinced I just don't understand something enough to have made the connection but I'm refusing to buy some just because I see other people buying it in GALLONS. Help me understand?
Lack of critical thinking specifically related to this event. As has been mentioned previously, the water supply will not be affected in any way if people in your house get sick.

We are planning to drive to the national parks in May. So far we are planning to go unless there is a cluster at our destination. I would be more nervous about flying and being in close quarters with large groups. If it was a WDW trip I would probably cancel. I feel like the parks with the crowds and all the touch surfaces is higher risk.

In my area the water does not taste good. It feels thick and has a funny taste. We do not drink the tap water but we cook with it. We have had it tested and it is fine to drink we just don't like it as well as many in our area. We did buy some bottle water this past weekend but it was because it was on sale and the kids take it to school. We have a water cooler that we refill 5 gallon jugs with and we have not do that. We are not worried about the water but I could see where others would in this situation. We did stock up on cleaning supplies, soap and some food just in case.

I know some people are stocking individual rooms with supplies so that person doesn't have to leave the room if they are sick. So my neighbor has 3 bedrooms with their own bathroom. In each room they have all the supplies they need so they don't have to leave the bedroom for 2 weeks. So each room has several cases of water, medicine, tissue paper ....... maybe that is why people are getting a lot of water.

I mean, I guess if you have the money and the room to do that... o_O

The amount of non-thinking surround this respiratory virus is rampant and the panic is being driven because people now get their information via social media rather than actual scientific evidence. (Which is near impossible to find without some agenda)

What we have now , is uneducated panic and unfettered rumor mills run wild. My advice is take advantage of it and buy the stocks that are low , take advantage of the travel discounts and live your life like you never heard of C19.
Your risk of dying from it are astronomically low compared to most other things you do on a daily basis

On our nextdoor we had people going overboard with panic. An infectious disease doctor came in on the conversation and explained things to our neighborhood. People seemed to calm down when this doctor explained the disease and the risk to people.

Something to think about.... Saw on the news the other night that due to the sanitary precautions people are taking for Coronavirus, the number of flu cases in the US are down 20-30%. So by my info and simple observations, with flu deaths at ~ 16,000 a year, statistically, there will be 3200 - 4800 less deaths in the US. With Coronavirus deaths at < 100 in US, this seems like a WIN/WIN virus as more people are living due to the Coronavirus. Perspective!

No agenda needed to search WHO's or CDC's websites although I wish the CDC would would make it clearly for the bottled water suggestions as it relates to illness.

When we booked are flight for the end of March the plane was approx. 90% filled. Now we I check it is 30% filled with seats becoming available everyday.

I talked to several pilots from different airlines and the airlines are going to do what they can to combat Covid19. They are going to disinfect the airplane, handout disinfectant wipes for the seats ............

If I wasn't in one of the high risk groups I would totally get on a plane and take a vacation. I would then take precautions on the trip to minimize my exposure.

I don't remember people freaking out about the swine flu with a 9% death rate at one time. Thank god that turned out not to be true. Anyway, please don't panic if you are a non elderly healthy person.

SARs was also went down when people washed their hands.

We're still going on our April trip at this point but I think people sometimes forget it's not just a mortality rate people are concerned about.

1) Spreading to people or getting it from people who have it

2) Quarantines/self-isolations

3) Impact to every day life if you get sick even if it's just mild

Take my husband's work for example as I mentioned before about travel restrictions--pertaining to Coronavirus concerns they now have an online form you fill out to let them know details related to your international travel and that's just for leisure. You have to tell them where you are going, when you are going, when you are coming back, etc. It's a very real possibility you may come back and be told to self-isolate depending on how things turn out, even while you're on your trip things could change. That's something looming in people's minds that for 14 days you may be told to not come into work (though I think it's up in the air if you'll be doing work probably depends on if you have your work computer with you already or not).

No coronavirus, just the plague. https://www.nps.gov/yose/planyourvisit/plague.htm

We have a trip planned for the last week of May, and as of now, we are still planning to go. I feel like, by that time, we will have a good handle on the situation though and be able to make a more educated decision on what to do.

We are not in the high risk groups. Initially, I was concerned about putting my 4 year old son in danger, but it sounds like his age group is the least likely to suffer major effects from this.

If we had to stay home sick, it wouldn’t be fun, but we could do it. My husband can work from home and I’m a stay at home mom.
