Is cooking in a studio ok?

We're visiting for 17 days this summer in a studio. I was thinking of taking a crockpot and toaster oven to do some cooking in the studio. Is this acceptable? I don't want to be charged by Disney for a deep cleaning of the room because it smells like food. Thanks

We have taken and used a Mickey Waffle Maker in studios. I have seen other threads of people using both crockpots and toasters in their studios, we never have. DW usually just makes a 1 pot meal and we warm it up in the microwave.

I take a crockpot every trip! Works like a charm! We also take a skillet and a small table that we put behind the door (doesn't impact getting in, skinning table) and it keeps the small counter clear.

They have toasters already so no need, if your talking about dvc studios. What works well too is a flat hotplate, we do bacon and eggs on it on the porch so, although I love the smell, it doesn't leave the whole room with bacon smell.

I have a George Foreman grill in my Owner's Locker that I have used in studios, although I mostly microwave. Also have some special dishes for microwaves -- bacon tray handy for pre-cooked bacon, egg dish, etc. I often get a Stouffer's mac n cheese or small lasagna, let them thaw in frig and heat them in microwave, too.

We are staying in a studio at BWV for the first time in October. We like the one bedrooms for the kitchen, but we aren't taking the kids this time so we are saving points. I'm trying to figure out the cooking situation too.

We have used a Mickey waffle iron in other non Disney hotels. It worked out great. However DH is gluten free so bacon and eggs would be nice. I may bring my small electric frying pan. I'm fine with bacon or sausage in the microwave, but I'm not so sure about eggs.

I have a microwave omelet pan from the Dollar Tree store, and also a microwave egg cooker that does a good job. I like to scramble my eggs and when in a pinch I have made them in a coffee cup! You could probably use some Gladware as well.

No, there is not an outlet on the studio balcony at BLT. (I don't believe any of the resorts have them.) I would hate to see folks tripping over cords or using extension cords. It sounds like an accident waiting to happen.

Keep in mind that you have more countertop space in BLT's kitchenette than you usually do in a studio. And there should be enough room for a toaster oven.

We have an 8 inch fry pan that we keep in our Owner's locker. We cook eggs most morning and not on the patio. We have also done tacos, canned tamales and even salmon patties ( for that one we did use an extension cord and cook on the balcony) . We have done chicken breast too. We like seeing how creative we can get. We have never had any lingering smells.

With that toaster you are bring....You can make the best tasting BLT's.........toast your bread, spread on some mayo, then sprinkle onto the mayo/toast, beacon bits, [you can find them in the salad dressing isle in the store] then add your slice tomatoes and lettuce.....you have just made one fast BLT.

I would think taking a spray can of Febreeze would be easier than cooking on the balcony?! That sounds a lot like camping…. I have never heard of anybody being charged extra for cooking smells in a 1-bedroom or larger so why would they charge extra for a studio?

Something else you can do (if you have one and if you're driving) is to bring a quesadilla maker…. Since there are toasters in the studios I think frozen waffles are much easier than schleping a waffle iron…. But then, I like to travel light…. I have made poached eggs in the microwave along with the microwavable bacon for breakfast sandwiches on toasted English muffins….

I didn't think any cooking on the porch/balcony was permitted.

As for cooking eggs in the microwave, I got an Easy Eggwich for Christmas and it works pretty good. Two in a box and it was purchased at Bed Bath and Beyond. And precooked bacon is wonderful.

I think disneynutz hit it right on the head. the studio is for a few quick little meals. scrambling some eggs in the micorwave with some toast. tuna on taost.. I have brought some frozen smoked sausage with some individ. mac and cheese microwave cups . whatever you can make work with a microwave toaster, fine. I am not sure what the rules are on bringing your own crockpot. since no one would know how old that crockpot was I would feel a mite hesitant of my next dooor neighbor having their food cooking in the crockpot all day while they are at the park

Yes, most resorts have a nice grilling area (SSR, AKV (by kidani) and Poly even has gas grills.) I have never used them, but assume there is a trick to getting it set up, particularly if there was someone there earlier who used it and it needs to be cleaned out/off.

For in-room cooking, the rule of thumb I was told by the front desk years back: There's a toaster, microwave, coffee maker and small fridge provided. IF you choose to add an additional cooking appliance, make sure it is always attended (crock pots are frowned upon as too many people leave them alone), cools down fast, is used in the kitchenette area only. I think it's common sense not to use anything with a flame.

I take this to mean a small george forman grill would be fine. Also acceptable are small hot plates (such as for pancakes or waffles.) I've been making pancakes for breakfast for years on a small 14x14 rival hot plate. This is the first summer I'm considering leaving it at home as last year everyone preferred cereal and bagles. I think we might try the grill, if it's not rusted for steak tips and corn on the cob (for now, VWL only has one, and it looks pretty run down).

Take note, before anyone goes there... DVC does not and has never permitted grilling on the balconies. If you do bring anything, be very, very aware of the appliance as the kitchenette is a tiny counter space and kids (or adults) can get hooked on a cord and pull everything down, causing burns. I never step away until it is unplugged, cooled, washed and put away. (Yeah, that said, I'm not bringing it this year. It's my vacation. )

There is a kitchen with stove vent in a 1 bedroom that might help a bit. Personally I do not cook in studios, if it cant be toasted or microwaved its not worth bring up a bunch of things like the Clampetts (apologies to granny). Cooking with a skillet or George Forman Grill just sounds like an accident waiting to happen not mention fire hazard. Not all guests are as responsible as you and may not be as careful. The Kitchenette in the studio while fine is still small.

By design studios aren't planned or permitted with a kitchen area for cooking. I don't remember if there is an exhaust fan in the kitchenette area. There may also be a fire code issue against using appliances other than what's provided.
