Is Chef Mickeys even edible anymore?

I feel bad saying this because I'm such a fan of the core Disney characters (and of food in general lol), but we've been to Chef Mickey's twice (once for breakfast, once for dinner), and while I can't say the food was inedible or terrible, it was just very, very basic, standard, and not very exciting. I love that it's inside of the Contemporary and that you can meet the fab five (with the monorail riding by and a beautiful view of Mary Blair's iconic mural), but the characters do often feel rushed because it's a large space and slightly chaotic. It's high priced, but you're not paying for the food- you're paying to meet Mickey, Minnie, Pluto, Donald and Goofy in one place. I think what would really help offset the basic food choices and rushed character interaction would be a quick meet-and-greet with Daisy when you first walk in, instead of having your picture taken with a somewhat dated statue of Chef Mickey. Come on Disney, Daisy should be with her crew! :)

Everytime we went to CM we would always tell Donald we want Daisy! He LOVES that! LOL

I really want to go since I havent in years and probably wont be back to WDW for a while. Id love to get some more photos with the characters and my daughter before she is too old to want to get her picture taken! It make such nice memories! But, now Im worried it will just be the most horrible experience ever! Should I try to switch to 1900 PF? I love it there, but we've been every time during our past 5 trips

You should go if you really want to. It can't be that terrible since it is still there and busy. We had a meal there but I don't remember which it was. While it was not my favorite, I am glad we went and my daughter loved the character interaction. Will I every go again, probable not. Our trip was 15 nights, we ate at a lot of places with better food and was cleaner but CM had a lot of kids who's parents did not feel the need to watch them or go with them to get food. The staff can only keep it so clean and there are not enough of them to follow every kid to the buffet line. Go and enjoy it with lower expectation then you would have at most Disney restaurants. I have had worse meals at place outside Disney.

If you want to eat breakfast at the Contemporary, I would suggest The Wave. We had dinner there on our last trip and greatly enjoyed it. I've heard that breakfast is one of the best (both value and quality) on property.

From my experience, the breakfast food quality at Chef Mickey's is about average for a Disney character breakfast buffet and at least on par with Crystal Palace (which generally gets good reviews here). IMO, the atmosphere isn't as nice as Crystal Palace but the Fab 5 kind of makes up for that.

That being said, the two best overall character breakfast buffets we've been to at WDW (where you can still get some or most of the Fab 5) are Tusker House and Cape May.

We never do character buffets for any meal except breakfast (just too many better places to go for lunch or dinner).

CMs does not have the best food, it's loud, it's chaotic, and at times not the neatest place in the World. Service can be spotty-we were once there and witnessed 2 CMs arguing over tables. For my 22 year old DS it's in the top spot of his must do restaurants and trust me he's normally a big foodie.

The reason it's so important to him, not just for us to eat there every trip, but for it to be our first meal at WDW are the memories we've created there. It's a tradition for our family. That picture taken at that silly little podium has been a chronicle of him growing up from the age of 6. Getting that hug from Mickey was the perfect start to our vacation.

On our trips without DS we now gladly skip CMs, so many better places to eat.

@DISNEY1975 if you have good memories, go enjoy the characters, don't expect exceptional food and have fun! It's your vacation, be happy with it!
