Is Bubba Gump that bad ?

scott joseph is the homer simpson version of an orlando dining critic. bubba gump's may not be victoria and albert's, but it's a good chain restaurant.

Thank you! I was hoping that it was something like that. We are by no means food connaseurs, just enjoy food that tastes good :)

I like to think about my family as 'normal'... Emeril's and such are special occasion restaurants. Bubba Gump's fits into places we like. Chili's, Friday's, Carrabba's, Margaritaville, etc.

nothing upscale, but good food and we can all find something we like.

I've heard quite a few reports on here about it, they range from peeps loved it, to not so great, so pretty much all kinds. I am going to try it when I go next, I like to decide for myself on these things for I know some peeps can't be satisfied by anything.

I haven't been yet, but I have some comments.

1. People who order sea food expect it to be perfect because it costs more. Look at the items the reviewer ordered and they're all about $15-$18 each. At Mythos I order a Wrap of the Day for $12.95 and I'm happy. At Margaritaville, I order a Cheeseburger in Paradise for $10 and know it's just a hamburger. But with sea food, things are different.

2. If the athmosphere is people yelling questions, then that would be a problem. At Margaritaville, there's Buffett videos playing on large screen TVs overhead. Same thing at the HRC, but it's pop videos on smaller TVs. I'd have to hear what kind of music is being played if they say the TVs are showing the movie clips.

Scott Joseph tends to write about the more upscale restaurants in Winter Park or downtown. Applying those standards to Bubba Gumps, yeah, it's going to come up a bit short. In fairness, I have only been to the Daytona branch, but they sound about the same--food on a par with, even slightly better than, Fridays/Bennigans/Applebees.

And I think the "Stop Forrest Stop" signs are brilliant--they allow you to get a server's attention quickly, and save being interrupted every two minutes by a server asking "how is everything?"

I went right after it opened. As a matter of fact, the picture in the review shows the very tiny round table I sat at. I'm no food snob, but I didn't care for it either. I thought the food was rather heavy and greasy. Didn't sit well in my stomach that night. That aside, I didn't like the atmosphere much. Our waitress was a bit over-zealous and proceeded to tell us a little more about her personal life than we cared to know. We were rushed through our meal and I was bumped into continuously by the wait staff running past our little table. Overall, just not a great experience. But it wouldn't hurt to try it for yourselves. Maybe they've worked some things out after it was open a while.

:thumbsup2 Our family visited Bubba's the end of Aug. and loved it!The prices may seem high, but you get a lot of food.On our 2nd visit,my husband and I shared an entre and had food left over.I love the atmosphere, very fun.We had a trivia contest with another table and won a free dessert!Piece of advice...watch the movie before you go!Give it a try.Everybody has different opinions!Only downfalll...only gave 5% discount for APH??Food and gift shop. :cool1:

I've not been to the one at Citywalk yet (bring on January!!) but went to the Bubba Gump at Times Square NYC twice in November 2004.

I thought it was a great restauarant. I really can't wait to go there in Janaury. Give it a go, the portions are large and the theming is wonderful.

We went last week (or was it 2 weeks ago?), and we loved it! If you're staying on-site, ask if the concierge has a card for you that you present for a free dip appetizer with purchase of an entree. The dip was way good and was served with lots of chips. The manager will come over at least once during your visit to make sure everything is OK. If it's not, speak up then. I'm sure anything you don't like would get sorted out. We'd go again in a heartbeat! :)

I've only been to the one in Monterey, but we loved it. Fun atmosphere, good food. True, it was a little greasy, a lot of it was fried, but it was still good.

I just read a review on the Orlando Sentinel online that really slammed Bubba Gump at City Walk. :( I hope that their experience was just one of the few bad ones because we're looking forward to trying it. I'm trying to post a link to the article here: http://www.orlandosentinel.com/ente...06sep17,0,5029329.story?coll=orl-caldiningtop

I mean come on, "run diner run"?

I don't know why the slammed it but I just went recently and it was increcibly delicious and our server had the best attitude about everything. :-) I think this location is one of the best in Orlando for some great food and fun servers with entertainment.

we go to the one in the mall of america.it is one of our favorite places to eat there.dh can't wait to try the one at citywalk.

We have been to the Chicago Bubba Gump's and it was great. The trivia interaction was lively and fun but my favorite thing (as someone mentioned earlier) was the "Run Forest Run/ Stop Forest Stop" sign on the table to signal the wait staff. We were able to actually have a conversation without the waiters interrupting every few minutes to ask us "How does everything taste?". The food was good and I am looking forward to visiting the Universal location in December.

We've been to the one in New Orleans, Charleston, and Daytona Beach (twice). We haven't had a bad meal there, yet.

At Charleston, we were a group of 8 and we had excellent service.

We like it and want to go to the Orlando one as soon as we can.

Just returned from Bubba Gump's and our whole group loved the food, bar, prices and atmosphere.

We also enjoy Wendy's double-cheeseburgers, as well as the chef's menu from Tchoup Chop with suggested pairings. We will all definitely return to Gump's.

:lmao: :lmao:

Y'all sound like our kind of people! We can dress up (if the occasion calls for it) and pay a fortune (if we feel like it) or we can get a good, fun meal in a cool new restaurant. Sometimes, "better" (read expensive) isn't always better in our book. We frequent both types of restaurants regularly, don't try to influence my mind (feeble as it is) by telling me a place is declasse' ;)

I should start by saying, we haven't been to one yet. Naturally, that won't keep me from offering my 2 cents. :p After reading reviews, I've come to the conclusion that opinions have more to do with the atmosphere than the food. It seems that those who enjoy the atmosphere love it. Those who think it's a little "too much fun" for an enjoyable dinner aren't so crazy about it. Food taste better, when you're in an atmosphere you enjoy, whatever that may be. If you're miserable just being in the restaurant, you're probably not going to give the food much of a chance. Not dining there myself I can't be certain, but I think it's probably wise to choose to or not to go based on your opinion of the atmosphere. :)
