I've also been kind of surprised at how condescending some of the responses have been. We have stayed both on and off site in the past and will probably do some of both on future trips. There can be advantages and disadvantages to both and people make their choices based on what works best or appeals most to their family. I don't think there is any difference between someone bringing along a couple of extra items to make their on-site room more comfortable and someone who puts in some extra time and effort to find the easiest way to get to the parks from their off-site hotel. Granted, both can be taken too far - if I'm staying at a Disney resort (or any hotel for that matter) I certainly don't want to see someone out frying fish on the sidewalk.
And we all know that off-site guests have been known to park at Downtown Disney or in resort lots to avoid paying for parking and some have admitted using resort pools for their midday break. I think as long as the measures you take do not pose a hazard or inconvenience to anyone, then do what works best for your family. And, as was stated earlier, a microwave is less hazardous than a hairdryer.
