Is bringing your own microwave crazy...?

"You can use all the excuses you want, but the room will still smell after you cook in the room."

Then Disney should do away with room service as well and ban bringing takeout into the room. In a very short time the smell of whatever you "cooked" will be gone. It's not like someone is going to be frying fish in the room.

"If Disney wanted you to have a microwave in your room, they would install a microwave in the room. "

As I and others stated in previous posts, Disney DOES allow microwaves in the room. They have them (at least some resorts) for the sole purpose of supplying them to rooms on request and there are no rules whatsoever on what you can cook in them or where to place them. They WANT you to have them or they wouldn't supply them free of charge. There is no safety issue here. Think of the hundreds, if not thousands of blow dryers being used in the mornings at any given resort. Disney resorts have to be built to withstand a tremendous load.

"And speaking of safety, microwaving baby food and baby bottles in a microwave isn't safe since you can get hot spots that can burn the baby's mouth. It's much safer to fill the sink with hot water and place the bottle or food into the hot water to warm it."

I think that anyone who knows how to push a button on a microwave knows to give the bottle a couple of shakes or stir up the baby food before you feed it to your kid. Besides the thought of putting a baby's bottle in a bathroom sink that has been used by thousands of strangers is disgusting.

I'm not sure I understand your anger over a really harmless subject but it would be nice if we could discuss a topic without questioning people's sanity. Besides, I've seen a lot "nuttier" ideas on how to save money at DW than using a microwave. I'm amazed this can be turned into a controversial subject.

Okay, I'll be the one to say it...I know that it is not a popular thing to mention but once you have decided to bring food, appliances, etc...someone has to ask why you are not looking into staying offsite in a timeshare or condo.

We just returned from two weeks at Liki Tiki Village (about a 10 - 15 minute drive to the maingate.

We had a 2 bedroom unit with a king size bed in the master and two doubles in the second bedroom along with a fold out couch. Like most timeshares, we also had a full kitchen (stove, microwave, dishwasher, table and chairs along with our own washer and dryer). Nice to be able to make your own food for a couple of meals and go out for one big meal each day. Also nice to be able to take home all of your clothes clean and already packed for your next vacation.

I know, you are not getting the "magic" of staying on site but we only paid about $350 for each week taxes included for these accomodations and when you are cooking in your closet, I would think that would take away from some of the "magic".

Offsite can be done well and inexpensively if you try....but, that is just my opinion and maybe one that no one wants to hear.

Hawt1, of course we want to hear your opinions. That is what a forum is for. I am capable of disagreeing with someone without being disagreeable. LOL

I love the idea of renting a house even if it would be off site but the main reason we go to Disney so much is that I am the driver and am night blind and depend on Disney transportation to get me safely around.

I think people are much safer with me in the room nuking a bit of food rather than driving blindly around the property.

Have a great Disney day and all!

Don't even try making sense with some on this board. I laugh when I read people on the Budget Board, who stay at the Contemporary, DVC, Polynesian..... sharing cost saving tips.

Biggest cost savings is staying offsite or driving (if feasible). Food is a pittance compared to those two expenses, not to mention the price of tickets.

Hey you're on vacation. A meal or two is fine, but people bringing Hot Pots, Microwaves, George Foreman Grills, Toasters along with shipping things in advance.....,

I thought I was the only one. I got blasted one time before when I questioned people who were shipping boxes of food to their hotel room.

We had six of us in our two bedroom unit so the per night rate per person was about $8.00. And to have our own bedroom that was likley larger than someone's onsite room for their family was luxury...full jacuzzi bath, shower, double sink and separate toilet area...Or to send the kids to bed and still be able to sit in the fully private living room and watch TV with no threat of waking them up.

I know that we could never stay in a hotel room, onsite or off now that we have been renting condos. Add in the cost of a minivan and you are still in great financial shape.

And if you end up at a good resort with lots of amenities, you can spend a few days right there in their waterpark or golfing...

I guess I should not talk about the advantages of this too much or more people might start doing it and drive up the price!!!

I had a thread on that subject on the Orlando Sites and Accomodations board.

I am one of those who is constantly amazed and amused about what I read on this board.

It is especially fun baiting "Disneyaholics". All in good fun....

But I must ask Hawt1..... What about spending time with your spouse after kids are asleep. It is a holiday afterall (LOL).

The beauty of lots of bedrooms...and an oversized shower and jacuzzi in our room.

So much better now than before when we were in hotel rooms and had to use the closet for our "private" time. You can only bang your head so many times on the microwave before the romance is gone! LOL

As was mentioned earlier, different strokes for different folks. How people choose to save money is entirely their call (as long as it is not illegal! ).
I ask that this thread not turn into name-calling and judgement passing. This thread asked for information and experiences. Please let's leave it at that.

Thank you.

Oh oh, am in trouble again.....

If the truth be told, I am sure Disney highly frowns on these electrical appliances in any of there rooms and the fact that people (me included) bring things to the park against their policy makes the board's content somwhat unscrupulous.

Get a sense of humour....... Nothing wrong with constructive debate....

While I will stick with my original opinon of yes, it bringing a microwave is a little crazy. I am just curious, have you called CRO and asked if they allow a microwave in the room?? To me this should be the deciding factor. If they have give you the thumbs up then, go for it.

I have stayed in rooms that supplied a mini-fridge and microwave. And the only thing I have ever used the microwave for was popcorn and maybe once to reheat left overs.

This is true and that is why the DIS has a debate board.

The original question begged judgment passing!

The questions asked if taking a microwave was crazy. My gut response was to buy one when you get to Orlando and leave it for the next person or see if someone wants to buy it.

The bigger issue was that this person and others are bringing all kinds of things with them to compensate for the inadeqacies of their chosen accomodations whem they can get all of these things and more by staying offsite.

So, I guess I did not get around to directly answering the question...

Yes..Crazy.

Now ban me from the boards for staying offsite because I've done nothing more than answer the question and back up with reasons for my answer.

I even prefaced my first post with my hesitation to even mention offsite because I sometimes feel like a leper who has been banished from the Magic Kingdom for even having this "offsite disease".

First page does not have one post discussing/debating Disney..... It concerns politics, religion and sports....

We/I were responding to a post and having some fun bantor back and forth based on the original post.

Then the Moderator, detecting that there were interlopers present who may not bow at the alter of Mickey Mouse asked that we stop.....

I'll continue here 'til banned.....

You are welcome to post your own topics on the debate board. In fact there have been at least two disney debates this week.

Sorry emmalgin,

We welcome all worshippers here. :teeth: Mickey, Bugs Bunny, The Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. No matter. As long as they are respectful of the others who post here.

But as WDW2002 has mentioned, we do have a Debate Board here and that is where we encourage debates of all ilks. And that is where threads on other boards end up when they have changed from informational to debate.

I don't care to have to have to move this one, which is the reason for my earlier comments.

Terrific idea! :)

Perhaps. People make their choice of accomodations for a variety of reasons. But this is not what the OP questions was about.

Now ban me from the boards for staying offsite...

If we banned everyone who has stayed off site, I would no longer be here nor many of our other moderators and probably HALF our posters!!! It will take a much deeper transgression than that to get you banned! :)

No reason in this world to feel this way. You will find that there are those on these boards who will never stay off site. But there are many who see no reason to spend the premium to stay there. We welcome both here. And we have a board dedicated to those who are interested in off-site accomodations - the Orlando Accomodations and Attractions Board. There you will find many discussions of great off site accomodations. Our family had the priviledge to stay the Hilton Grand Vacations near Sea World last summer. After that, I will be hard pressed to ever stay on site again unless we get some fabulous deal. But I have a husband who does not MIND the drive. This differs from family to family. And there are often discussions of off site accomodations here on this board as well.

There are definately proponants of both staying on site and off site and both opinions are welcome upon this board AND this site.

as requested.

I find it fascinating the lengths people go to..... and I am one of them, though I draw the line somewhere.

Guys, the closet isn't for your personal time - the shower is!!!! Turn the water on REAL loud!!! ;)

Seriously, I did consider bringing a microwave and then thought- the heck with it. I budgeted a little more in other places.

Would I stay off-site again? Yes, did it twice. Only stayed on-site once (at Swan- I know that technically isn't Disney but that could be a debate topic too), this last trip, and now I am hooked. But yes, I would go off-site again if need be.

When we went to Dis this trip - no husband - (he thinks Mickey Mouse should be banned from the face of the earth!) He just doesn't travel well. So I didn't need that private time and it was great being right there.

But would I -

Stay off-site again - yes if I had to- the Disney magic on site isn't even what gets me - it's the pure convenience and not having to climb in that car in 98 degree heat and the ability for our party to split up.

Take a micro-wave or mini-fridge - yes (things like that are helpful if you are a diabetic like me who needs to eat quickly at times)

Take a grill - no - I would have to actually be able to cook something that didn't come out of a box to warrant that!

Pack some food - always do that - back to the diabetic issue!

Nope I wouldn't bring a microwave, george forman grill or a crock pot. Just not my thing. If I wanted to be able to cook like that I would rent something with a kitchen. Plus the thought of washing that stuff in the bath room sink....just the thought of it grosses me out. Plus I have a GF grill and the amount of grease that drips off of it..... What do you do just throw it in the trash?
I don't have a problem with snacks or drinks but to cook entire meals just doesn't make sense to me. Plus the clean up....
To me if I felt the prices were too high to eat at Disney then I would go off site.
