Is August as bad as everyone tells me?

We have done late august twice and mid july twice. they felt about the same to me heat wise but the crowds were much better in late August. I agree that an afternoon rest or pool time is the way to go to break up a hot day. But honestly I did not feel that August in Florida felt much different than August in New jersey - same heat and humidity and there are so many air conditioned places to stop and cool down. I'm trying again in August this year for free dining. A bit concerned since I can't go as late in the month as previous years since we have a DD starting College and she must be home by the last week of August. Thus we are doing the 15th-23rd

I've been in both May and August, and yes, it is hot and humid. I am very fair and do not tolerate the heat easily, but I just made sure to wear cool, natural fiber clothing, stay hydrated, and take breaks when needed. The time I went in May I was almost five months pregnant with my twins, and I did okay. Yes, it will be hot, but there are ways to deal with it. Of course, it could just be that I will go to Disney at any time, and tend to look at the entire thing through rose colored glasses!

But, I have to say, the size of the BUGS in August was AMAZING to me! What in the world do the eat down there? I swear, some of those bugs were the same size as my three year old!

In any event, I'm sure you'll have a great time - after all, you'll be in DISNEY!

it's very weird i live in Wales and can't stand the hot days over here but we went to America in August last year and i adapted so easily and loved the heat. We love it so much that we're going again for three weeks in August 07

Look on the bright side..you won't be the only one dealing with the heat/humidity. We're going the 3rd week in August this year so we'll be "suffering" with you. I would rather suffer at DW then in the same heat/humidity here at home in NC. :)

On the :sunny: side, we experience a night in late Oct that was just as bad as a night in late Aug.: 80's, 1000% humidity.

What you really need to watch for is the cumulative affect of so many hot days in a row. Have a designated ice water back-back carrier for your group and take breaks!

If there are so many people who hate the summer heat and humidity, then why are the parks so crowded? :teeth:

We (me, DW, DD7, and DD3) did a summer trip last August, and the temperature was consistently in the low 90's with high humidity and an afternoon thunderstorm every day. We had a fantastic time. So much so, that we are going again this July.

Just be prepared (sun screen, fluids, etc.), and you should be fine.

Hmmm....maybe because some people love Disney sooo much, they lose their ability for rational decision making :scratchin Lol, seriously, if I didn't live so close to Disney, I would go when I could. Even if it meant going in :sunny: August :crazy2: when school is out. We have a lot of flexibility on the times of year we can go and I've found that milder weather(even in high crowd season) makes a nicer vacation for us than hot, hot, hot humid weather. I can tolerate almost anything at Disney and still have a good time- but 95 degree weather isn't one of them. I want to spend a LOT of time in the parks- I'm not commando are anything- but one afternoon of swimming at the resort is enough for us and the waterparks don't really cut it for us either- so we usually spend all day in the parks. And since 90 degree weather practically begins in late April- early May here- I'm over it by July and definitely by August. However, I can completely understand so many people from out of state going in the summer when kids are out of school, prices are lower, and besides being hot in the parks just doesn't bother some people. So anyone going for the first time in August, don't worry- just be careful to monitor yourself and your family so ya don't over do it and I'm sure you'll have a great time!! :thumbsup2

What about the last week in September (Sept 26-Oct 2)? I've been to Florida beaches in Aug/Sept, but you always get the breeze that cools you off. This is our first trip to Disney and I am just wondering what I have in store for me. :confused3

Thanks,

Hi Missy,
Our next trip will be in Oct 2007. My dh and I were there Oct 5 2004 and we walked around Epcot for 2 days straight- eating our way around the world at the Food and Wine fest. Don't get me wrong, in Sept/early Oct it may still get pretty hot. Afternoons may reach the 90s. But I do find the mornings and evenings to be more tolerable that time of year. Even the afternoons are better. I guess it's less humid or something. It's just usually more comfortable. So please don't let the threat of possible hot afternoons stop you from going. Especially if you are getting the free dining. I have seen afternoons in Dec almost reach 90-we're usually in short sleeves on Christmas day here :sunny: I'd ask myself: Are my family and I able to tolerate heat well? If not, would you mind spending time at the pools mid-day? What is the temp like that time of year in your part of the country? If it's cooler, you may be able to tolerate it here better than people who know they will still be dealing with 90 degree weather through Oct and possibly part of Nov. I think I'm so turned off by the parks in the summer because we seem to never have a break from the heat here. I live in Gainesville and we are a very "green" city, meaning we have tons and tons of trees surrounding us. It's beautiful, but when it's hot here you get no breeze, lots of bugs and humidity and no relief from it sometimes for 8 mths or more. Just want to make sure I haven't negatively influenced anyone's decision to go. It's hard enough making all these decisions when planning a WDW trip w/out some weather "whimp" like me making you second guess yourself ;) Take a look at www.allearsnet.com if you haven't yet and I'm sure you'll find tips on how to deal w/ hot weather- just in case. Oh, and....HAVE FUN!!!! :cheer2:

Thanks for your advice...WE ARE SO EXCITED! :Pinkbounc

We will be returning on August 23 for our 3rd trip in the same time period. Crowds were bigger in '04 than '02 and I expect with free dining it might be a little busier in '06. That said we hardly had to wait for anything. Made good use of fastpass and we were in and out of the heat. We have done entire days without leaving the park for a break when our kids were 6, 4, & 3. The stroller helped immensely. This will be our first trip without a stroller and we will gage the kids and let them be our guide. I'm not worried about hot weather. Hurricanes, a little.

We do seem to have the unfortunate abiltiy to be caught without shelter in a deluge on at least one day of each trip. Even in our ponchos we get soaked. I almost think that is worse than the heat. It's a long walk back to your room when you are soggy, cold (yes I said cold) and miserable. ;)

But, ---- I'll take a hot or soggy day in WDW over a trip to the Dells here in WI any old time!

Here's my take on the weather. We're going in August for the free dining too - this will be my second trip in August in addition to a July trip years ago. We also went last May and it was very hot and very humid...as humid as any FL summer day has ever been IMO. The difference is...we left Connecticut in May and entered the heat of Florida with no advance acclimation. Every time I've gone in the summer, adjusting to the weather never felt difficult, since I was coming from a hot, humid Connecticut summer (CT is downright miserable at times in the summer)...the weather wasn't much of a change. I'm not sure where you live - if you're coming from a more temperate state, you may definitely feel more overwhelmed by the heat and humidity.

I agree with gonemousin. We just got back and thought it was very hot but here in Michigan we're still not consistently above 60 degrees yet so it was kind of a shock to the system. DH and I went in early Sept. a couple of years ago and yes it was hot and humid but not nearly as bad as I expected and it is probably b/c I was already partly used to the summer weather.
