Is ASKING for a upgrade in bad taste?

Was wondering what you thought about me asking for a complimentary upgrade once I check in to the Animal Kingdom Lodge Tommorow?

I think it's perfectly fine today provided that you do it very courteously. Maybe something like.....

"I was just wondering if there were any upgrade rooms available right now. If not, that's ok, but I just thought I might ask."

As long as your asking nicely and not demanding - and thank the person for checking even if there's nothing available - I think it's no problem.

Good luck on getting one!

Certainly not, if done with grace and accept the decision in the same manner. Also if you are wanting a complimentary one make sure that is clear or you might get one and be paying the difference.

Unless they have their "No Upgrades Available, Please Do Not Ask", sign on the desk, which at times I have seen at this resort.

We have been to AKL twice in the last year and gotten upgrades both times without asking. I did send a fax the first time and asked for a lovely view, but faxes seem out of favor now. The second time we were just upgraded from std to savannah with the bunks we requested.

WRONG

Pollite is one thing, whimpy is another.

If you are going to bother to ask for an upgrade, do it with authority. Getting a free upgrade is nothing but a sales job. You have to sell yourself to the counter worker so they will give you the upgrade.

The quoted statement is that of someone with zero self confidence, and will get no upgrade.

Not being mean, just telling it like it is.

.

GOT QUATTRO?

You are not being mean, you are being rude. As someone with a great deal of self confidence and not a whimp, I don't mind telling you that. I prefer to be polite and considerate when dealing with people in a customer service position. In my opinion, that gets a person further than a pompous windbag pulling a "sales job".

BTW -- I have been upgraded before using a friendly, polite nature.

Now.....Have a nice day!

I always ask politly .. something like this .. with a smile on my face..

"Do you have any room upgrades availible? We would love to have a x view (water, etc)." If they say no, I say .. "thank you, anyway" and keep on smiling... and ask him/her to show me on the map what they do have.

I have only been flat turned down once .. and that was at ALK when we on an AP rate. I don't know if that had anything to do with it or not. Also, the hotel was at 100% capacity.. which does make it hard to find empty rooms.

I agree with the polite approach. We've only asked once -- at WL -- and were upgraded to a courtyard view room. Normally, we book the type of room we want, so we know what we will get and are not disappointed. I'm not one to depend on the luck of the draw for upgrades.

Perfectly acceptable if done in the polite manner. Quattro, you sound like my Dad. Polite and pleasant is the rule of thumb when at Disney.

I would offer to pay to show you are serious and hope to either get a bargain rate for the upgrade or they go ahead and do it free. I'm thinking along the lines of, "when I booked the room, my money was tight, but this is my son's first trip and I really want to make it special for him. Would it be possible to upgrade my room and how much would it be?"

Of course if you use that exact phrasing, I'll have to kill you, but you get the idea.

I think Quattro was kidding!

(You were kidding, right Quattro? Please say you were kidding!)

I always ask for a complimentary upgrade, and I always get one. Now, I *think* they were going to give me one anyway, I am not sure. BUT...I go the check in counter all happy and bouncy (it is not an act, I have a permanent smile on my face when I am checking in for my WDW vacation) and when i feel the time is appropriate (maybe while they are looking at my ID or something) I say, "Oh, and I just thought I'd ask for you to check if any complimentary upgrades are available!" Even though it may seem tacky to use the word "complimentary" I feel if you don't they might say, "SURE! we have concierge level available!" And then you will have to go through the awkward questioning of whther they are going to CHARGE you for that or not! LOL!

I am always prepared for them to say no. And if they said no, I would say, "That's ok, thanks anyway!"

Asking if upgrades are available is perfectly fine. The CM will tell you the difference in price. There is no rhyme or reason to pixie dust upgrades...
I think it depends on how crowded the hotel is, if there are any upgrades to be given...maybe an upgrade from your room is sold out, what is available and being in the right place at the right time.

At WDW the room assigners put you into a "room number" 3 days before your arrival date....so what may appear as a check in upgrade has already been decided 3 days ago...you are just finding out about it at check in.

When looking for an upgrade, courtesy or paid for, it never pays to be rude. The person behind the desk is the one that can make things happen. Demanding something that you have not paid for will not get you an upgrade. Why would you be rude and demanding to anyone anyway, for any reason?

If I was the CM behind the desk and someone asked in a demanding way for an upgrade I would not only not give you one, but I would most likely put you in a room that smelled like a wet dog and over looks the parking lot.

Also slipping someone some money does not work at WDW. They are not allowed to accept tips and I also think that in order to upgrade, they have to have it ok'd by a manager.

It does work in other hotels, if there is availability. We usually book the room we want and don't look for an upgrade. They are really few and far between when you consider the amount of guests checking in. It never hurts to ask, however. If you want the room upgrade, be prepared to pay for it.

We were upgraded to water view at POR without even asking! Do they upgrade you to another type of resort, mod to deluxe?

If one is going to ask for an upgrade, your best bet is to become friends with that CM. Form a bond with them. Talk to them, pay attention to them, be friendly, polite, patient, and most importantly, enthusiastic. When you ask, do it nicely, and let them know that you understand if it isn't possible, or that its okay if the room isnt ready yet. If it isn't possible, don't be dissapointed. Remember, just because the CM doesn't look up anything or go to the back, doesn't mean that they didn't try. They might already know from a previous guest that no upgrades are available.

It should also be noted that you might not be able to get an upgrade, and then 5 minutes later, the person next to you does get one. This is because they were pre-blocked for the upgrade days before you arrived.

We were given an upgrade at CSR without asking either however, I don't see any harm in asking! Here's wishing you lots of PIXIE dust with your request! :wizard:

Chip and Dale-That is exactly how I *wanted* to word my post. You make some excellent points. I forgot to mention in my post that it is a good idea to convey that you are not in a rush for your room, and that you do not mind waiting for a complimentary upgrade.

I plan on asking this, "we just spent 6 nights at POP and are so super excited to be staying here now! Are there any complimentary upgrades to a savannah room? We don't mind waiting! " ( we're booked standard for 5 nights.) If they say, "NO" I will ask, "well do you know how much more it would be to pay for an upgrade?" (i've heard you can get discounted upgrades too.) if they say that that is not possible either, then i will say, " well I really appreciate your trying to help me, can you at least find me a room with bunkbeds?" and leave it at that. If someone else gets an upgrade, GOOD for them. If I don't get bunkbeds, I'll still be thrilled! I'm blessed to be going!!

My plan for our stay at the WL is to say, "I know the resort is booked pretty solid but I was wondering if there were any upgrades available and what they would cost."

For the Poly I am going to ask, "We really wanted a Garden Concierge room when we booked but they were sold out, could you check if there is any availability to upgrade and how much the difference would be?"
