Is anyone on the Dream right now? How did a girl fall overboard?

Now that I rewatched the video, I think I was mistaken. I think the man is actually holding onto the boat with his arm, not comforting the girl. I'm not making a judgement either way, since it's impossible to put ourselves in his shoes if he is the father, but I wanted to correct the bad info I posted above.

I said this above, but, to repeat...

My guess is the crew was essentially acting as CPS in this case. Security would have been checking the videos as the rescue operation was going down. If they saw definitively that the father put her on the rail, that is endangerment and their duty besides rescuing them would be to protect the child. They don't know the intentions of the father. It would be very similar if a child went into the ER with a questionable injury where CPS would be called to investigate. The parents would be separated from the child. Since there is only one rescue boat, they couldn't put him in another, so this was the next best thing.

I'm more shocked they neither one of them is in a neck brace and that they're not laying down. I'd think there'd be the possibility of a spinal injury and not stabilizing that would risk further injury.
I think that’s a little bit fantasizing there that scenario. I don’t think Disney would risk separating a father from his child that just went overboard going after that said child. They aren’t judge and jury especially in a situation that’s literally within 10 minutes of happening full of chaos

What disturbs me about this video? Is that some Mother‘s filming while her obviously really little kid is watching. If I saw two bodies alive or dead in the water, I would not have my kids watch that because you don’t know what the outcome is. I wouldn’t want my kid going to bed at night knowing they saw a body floating.

According to cbs news Miami the child was not sitting on the railing. The parents were playing shuffleboard and the five year old girl climbed up and went over. It’s being investigated by Broward sheriffs. Sorry can’t post link, but you can google it.
The rail near the shuffle board areas is not easy to climb at all. I could see if it had been one of the porthole cutouts but near the shuffleboard... wow.

Reddit strikes again.

Then again I’m still confused as to what really happened. News articles say differing things

So now she was sitting on the ledge herself while the father was taking a picture? Was he taking a photo of her or something else, without seeing her climb? Did the parents see her there or did it happen quickly without notice?

Crazy story either way but still don’t really know the real story

I wonder if she went to a corner and basically parkoured her way up the two sides? (Going by picture of the shuffleboard deck; I haven’t been on the Dream.)

But wow. I’m glad we have a reputable source giving info!

Re: some earlier comments about the dad’s body language on the boat and why he wasn’t holding his daughter, I wonder if he was in adrenaline dump. Based on my one experience with adrenaline dump, I’m not sure I would’ve trusted myself to hold my own daughter, honestly, not in that situation. I wouldn’t be surprised also if the safety protocol is that one guest can’t hold another on the boat.

I hope they’re getting the care they need to help process. Traumatic for everyone.

Kids that age are quick and love to climb. My son at that age would have had no trouble finding a way to climb it. It sounds like the parents were playing shuffleboard and the kid climbed the rail while they were absorbed in the game. I think any of us that have kids have had a close call or two.

It's being investigated and Disney is not making any statements. Disney is probably glad the dad is taking the early blame on social media. They are probably hoping the story blows over before the public finds out a kid can climb a rail on a cruise ship.

I would imagine he was physically and emotionally spent after an adrenaline rush like that. He had already spent 20 minutes holding her in the water. He put his hand to his face a few times. It looked to me like he was crying.

I just think two things can be true at the same time and hate that dad is possibly getting shamed all over.

Maybe he did sit her on the ledge and maybe parents looked away for a second while she climbed- but then he proceeded to jump from the 4th deck of a cruise ship that was moving into the open ocean. They can make a terrible mistake and be a hero dad.

Yes, they are acting as guardians. There is no way to know who the man is or if she was deliberately removed from the ship.

There is no way a child can climb these railings. DCL has them secured in a way it is impossible. If you haven't been near these railings you can't understand. Close calls a time or two with the number of children that sail DCL yearly would mean there would be far more children falling off ships.

Have only been on the Dream once... but, from what I remember I find it hard to picture a part of the jogging track a child could have climbed up and over... And, I would think Disney doesn't want headlines like this and know they have lots of kids on the ships...

That's why I am having such difficulty envisioning what happened. The Disney-owned station covered it and identified the guy who jumped in as the dad.

Personally I am not going to guess why the dad would or would not be holding the child.

I am sure though that there will be a number of different investigations by various agencies and parties that Disney and the family will now participate. I suspect generally speaking, that the public is likely to hear too many of the details.

I’ve cruised on both the Dream and the Fantasy multiple times and I would agree it would be nearly impossible to accidentally fall off deck 4. I say nearly because it happened. There are some places along the deck where there is equipment related to the life boats etc and while I seem to remember things to block access I’m not convinced a child couldn’t find a way to climb and get themselves into trouble.

As a parent who started cruising with a 4 year old boy I was pleasantly surprised to see how safe Disney ships were/are. I don’t think this should cause grave concerns but I do think it is entirely possible this was a tragic accident.

Did parents maybe miss something child was doing, maybe. Is there something Disney may learn and decide to secure in a different way, maybe. Could a cast member have made a mistake and left something not fully secured, maybe.

It is amazing this story had a happy ending and I’m grateful for that. I’ve fallen victim to speculating and wanting to cast blame on this but I think we all really do need to wait and see what comes out. We really don’t know what happened except we have a relatively happy ending. I’m sure there will be trauma for multiple people to deal with and maybe even some injuries we are unaware of but what a miracle it wasn’t worse!

I have been near these rails for miles and miles. 😂 I'll be on the Dream in 5 days. I'll let you know if I find an escape route.

It wasn't a toddler. A child of a certain height could pull themselves up on the rail. Kids don't generally do that because by age 5 they usually have common sense and an awareness of heights and danger. No one said kids are falling off ships. Falling off a ship takes some effort.

We started cruising when our kids were 4 and 7. Our youngest was part-monkey. I took him to the railing and pointed down and said, "See how far down that is? If you fall, we can never find you. Don't go near the edge, ever!" Not that kids always listen but it worked.

I cringe even when I see kids sitting on the railings in lines at WDW and parents are oblivious. All it takes is losing your balance and falling backwards to end up with a skull fracture or traumatic brain injury. :sad2:

Based on the crew member saying that she saw the whole thing, I'm expecting the ships to make some changes if a 5 year old is able to climb over the railing. I have a daughter (she's an adult now) who climbed everything from an early age, like as soon as she had the motor skills. I put her in gymnastics to help channel it. I could never take my eyes off of her.

I assume people who are saying that the Dad put her on the railing to take a picture are confused with the story of the grandpa who put the little girl in the window on RC.

Meh, I'd wait until the investigations are finished. The article linked was a woman reporting that a crew member told her that he/she had seen the whole thing. Quite a lot of room for broken telephone there.
