This seems like pure speculation. Doubtful that DCL is doing anything until they can investigate and do not see them wanting headlines that say "banned a child for falling overboard" until DCL is certain that the family is at fault. I could see DCL banning but not this fast. Right now the focus is likely on making sure the family is okay medically.

I would assume regardless of how a person ended up in the water they would be banned. You would either have to intentionally jump or being doing something really stupid to fall in. I guess there are other ways, but those would be a homicide.

Yes. Because the windows on the pool decks are tinted and you can easily see when the window is open. While it was not intentional on the grandfather's part, it was negligent.

Holding or sitting any child (or sitting yourself) on the rail is negligent. The rails are high enough that for the vast majority of people you're not going over unless it's intentional or you do something stupid.

Yes, the grandfather eventually plead guilty to negligent homicide and received 3 years probation.

Yep. The only way I could even remotely see them being able to blame Disney would be IF one of those gates that is locked had been left unlocked and open. But given how when workers have to go through them they either lock it behind them or close off the deck, the odds of that happening are slim to none.

Well, first that's NOT official Disney Cruise Line anything - it's a news article. What it leaves out is that if he did in fact sit her on the rail to take her picture, he caused the fall in the first place.

I think you are right that it is highly likely at some point they will end up banned, but I doubt DCL has officially made that statement or decision so close to the incident happening without having checked with legal and doing an investigation first. Disney is too smart of a company to be issuing proclamations like that the same day of an incident.

The first article I saw on this had a similar bend of how commendable this father is for jumping in to save his kid, and all I could think of was that horrible RC grandfather incident (which haunts me every time we sail now tbh) and that there was no way in heck this kid just randomly fell overboard. Either dad was holding her up and let her fall, or someone else did. I'm grateful this story has a happier ending than the RC one but I also really wish the full truth would come out since the current framing really doesn't sit well with me. Kudos to Disney for the swift rescue action.

As an aside, this is a reason to bring back the non-mass muster drill. The video you watched either in the app or on the screen had a section on ‘over board’ (throw ring, call emergency line etc). The in-person must drill doesn’t cover it at all.

This is horrifying. And they both are incredibly lucky. Just to survive the fall. To have not hit anything on the way down or be swept under the ship. All I will say is someone was doing something they should not have been doing. You can not fall overboard unknowingly on a cruise ship. The true heroes are the well trained crew who rushed to their rescue.

The father should be charged with child endangerment and fined for the cost of the rescue. Probably had to stop the ship as well as all of the emergency response measures that had to take place.

I think I remember that. I guess he was hoping there wasn't video of it so he could claim he didn't know.

Exactly! It's akin to calling arsonist firefighters heroes for saving people they didn't know were in buildings where they started fires. My guess is he just jumped yes to try and get to her, but also because he knew his spouse (or ex-spouse - could have been just him and the kid on the cruise) would push him off again when they found out what he did.

The real heroes are the crew members who worked so quickly.

I would be surprised if Disney ever publicly stated anything about the incident other than crediting the crew, and stating how great their safety procedures are.

There are some comments on the Reddit thread from people who are saying they’re on the ship and heard from crew that the man is not the girl’s father but is a professional diver.

Also one comment saying the person heard from a waiter that the girl had been climbing on some sort of ladder and fell off. (No idea where one would have been or why her parents/guardians wouldn’t have put a stop to it, if so.)

Either way, I imagine we won’t know for sure until/unless Disney or the girl’s family make some sort of official statement. But I do agree that the Disney rescuers are to be commended, and I’m glad it was a good outcome for the man and the girl.
