Is anyone on the Dream right now? How did a girl fall overboard?

Hopefully after the authorities review all the video available it will be released. I do not see why they should not release the video of where the 5-year-old was prior to falling, how she fell, the action her mom and dad took and the dad going overboard and locating his daughter.

I don't think the video will be released for privacy (and security) reasons. The names haven't been released, the child is a minor, and no criminal charges have been filed at this time.

I doubt Disney feels obligated to release it simply to satisfy the public's thirst for gossip and "the real story".
It's really none of our business.

Agreed. People keep saying there's no way to ever know but I've heard that it's on security camera video. That's an easy way to put all thhe rumors to rest. If this were a standard police call on land, the contents of the video would be included on the police report.

Cover the child and father, do not release the names but showing what happened is not an unreasonable ask?

Also, if they released video to the authorities, they may be available on a Freedom of information request, and I am sure many will be made

You could make a case that anyone planning to cruise with a child has a right to know
I think they have sufficiently explained the risk for anyone cruising to know what the risks are and how to avoid them. The risk is if you or your child climb up on a rail and sit on it on a moving ship, there is a danger of falling off. How you avoid it is what many parents (myself included) already do, hold your child’s hand or position yourself between your kids and the rail so you can keep an eye on them, and then actually keep an eye on them.

The only thing we still don’t know is what the parents did to allow this to happen. Did the mom knowingly allow the kid to climb and/or take a photo of their kid while she sat there? Was she distracted on her phone and not paying attention? Did she have her hands full with another kid? Did both parents assume the other parent was watching. Or did they just not watch their kid and not care. These facts only serve to measure the degree of fault the parents may have, and don’t help future guests in any way. We may be curious about it but doesn’t mean we have a right to know.

I don't think Disney (or any cruise line) would be wanting that video released - it would be a how to video of how to jump in and rescue someone who has gone overboard! 999 times out of 1000, this situation would have lead to 2 deaths. At the very least they don't want to have to split emergency resources to look for a 2nd person who thought themselves the hero because the saw how to do it on the interwebs.

I doubt that Disney will release the video because it could be evidence in a lawsuit. It's possible the parents will sue Disney for safety negligence -- not saying they would win, but people see $$$ when it comes to Disney and perhaps they would pursue a personal injury claim.

Unless they released them to a Federal Agency (does not appear so) they are not subject to FOIA. Florida’s public records law also appears to conflict.

Regardless, to claim any parent has a right to know is just completely incorrect. I know we live in an entitled society, but we don’t have a right to know everything just because we feel like it.

I personally wish they would, mainly because I don't want DCL to feel unnecessarily pressured to take additional "safety" steps like covering the deck 4 portholes which makes the deck less pleasant for everyone, when this is very likely a case of parental negligence. (And please, lay off the "don't judge" b.s. The most judgmental commenters I've seen on here are the ones castigating other posters who based on extensive DCL cruising experience simply state the obvious, that this accident was very likely caused by guests, not DCL.)

However, I very much doubt DCL will share any more info than the generic blurb they shared the first day. Dragging this out in public wouldn't help DCL's image, even if they could show proof they were no way at fault. And if local authorities were going to share footage, I think they already would have done so or indicated their plan to do so. I think they're happy to put this to bed, too, since it's a cruise ship and no one was seriously hurt.

DCL undoubtedly already knows exactly what happened. They have cameras everywhere. This accident was very likely caused by parental negligence, but it wouldn't serve DCL to state that publicly (either legally or in terms of public image). They will take whatever steps they need to take privately to protect themselves legally, including keeping quiet, and they will just move on from this.

Yes no doubt you are correct and none of us will ever know what truly happened despite our curiosity. I so enjoy walking and jogging around deck 4 and the breeze and views from these portholes will be sorely missed if because of this incident (after 25+ years of being there) have to be enclosed. Seen this in other places of natural beauty lie Grand Canyon and cliffs of moher where barriers have to be put up so no one gets too close for that perfect selfie and takes a tumble. This is definitely not only negligence but a societal issue where some just feel entitled and the blame is elsewhere except me. When this ends not sure.

But cruising has definitely changed. Kids run rampant all over the ship now - no parent in sight. I think family vacations should be about togetherness as a family. If you need time there are the kids clubs or take a separate adult only vacation. But your kids are your primary responsibility.

^^^. All of this. Most likely you will not see video. DCL knows how it happened and the local authorities do too. They will all take the next steps-what they will be we may not hear, although you may see, if they alter the port holes. The statements have been issued, crew praised and thanked, authorities told the family how lucky they were. We all know that to fall overboard is no accident and that someone was doing something they were not supposed to do and in the case of a child, they were not being supervised. That is all we really need to know.

You may have a hard time believing but I was on that cruise and my servers - Lucy from Argentina was our drinks server, and I believe our main server was Waru (sp?) from Indonesia - did indeed tell us that the medical evacuation was a man in his 50s who sat at their tables in the first dining rotation and he’d had a heart attack. They were very shaken up by it. Would you like me or my dining companions to swear out an affidavit? Happy to do so!

As for people pointing to the Daily Mail - I lived in the UK for several years and we always called it the Daily Fail. It’s far from being a source of truth and facts. I’d wait for a far more reputable report.

Glad everyone survived what could have been a terrible tragedy.

And apparently they were wrong too, because according to someone on Reddit, it was a family member of theirs.

"Hi, just wanted to clarify that it was not a heart attack, and it was not in the first dining. This was a family member of mine and it happened mid-day around lunch time."

Heart attack might have happened but apparently it wasn't the helicopter evac incident either. I was on this cruise too and definitely so many stories out there over who/what happened!

We do know. The child climbed up the rail and fell off. The railings are not climb proof anyone can climb them. The cruise lines are built to prevent someone from accidentally falling off. but they can’t prevent a child or adult from doing something stupid.

It is shocking for me to see people defending these parents. So what about balconies on rooms? Should we do away with those too? Should parents be forgiven for letting their guard down there too? How easy would it be for a child to jump off of any balcony anywhere? And yet it almost never happens. Why? Because most people watch their kids. No, it doesn’t happen in an instant. Not if you are watching your kid. It’s that simple. Is it exhausting? Yes. Welcome to parenthood. In the natural world, some animals die as soon as their offspring are self sufficient. It’s that exhausting.

My perspective on parenting has shifted dramatically since I was a younger parent. Back then, I often judged others' parenting choices. Now, with a grandchild, I see just how cunning children are. It's simply not realistic to expect a parent to be distraction-free and have constant eyes on their child. Maybe it's time we set aside our judgments regarding this overboard story.

That’s why it’s not ideal for children to be raised by grandparents, as wonderful as grandparents are. They don’t have the stamina of youth to keep up with rambunctious children. The fact that not one child to my knowledge has fallen off of a Disney Cruise Line ship in its approximately 28 years of operation until last week? That fact alone is evidence that yes it is possible to watch even the most difficult and ingenious of children (which we happen to have lol.). There are balconies and railings everywhere on a cruise ship. Why hasn’t one child ever fallen off? Because people, 99.9999% of them watch out for their children’s basic safety at a minimum.

There are some grandparents that are in excellent physical health and can easily keep up with young children.
