Is anyone else tired?

Literally Tired? No matter what I do, 4 out of 7 days I'm consistently tired at work. I do work a desk job. I get out and walk around on breaks, I always try to take a lunch away from my desk. Bit I've been noticing that I just can't shake it. I get pretty much sleep at night, so I don't think that's it! What does everyone else do to fight their midday exhaustion?

I have worked long hours at a desk job for 40 years. I go to the gym every day after work. I also make sure to eat regularly. I have oatmeal for breakfast, a piece of fruit mid-day, usually a turkey sandwich for lunch, another piece of piece 2 hours later.

If I skip the exercise or mess with the food cycle, I'm worthless.

You might consider going to the Doc and having your vitamin D level checked. I was really low and she gave me a script for a large dose and it helped.

Yes, I am tired all the time.

Thanks! I have been doing the c25k program, sometimes before work, or sometimes after. Maybe a routine would help. I could seriously crawl under my desk and sleep right now!

Maybe I will look into this more. I take a multivitamin daily, but it could possibly not be enough! Thank you!

I second this. My Vitamin D levels barely registered when they were checked. I'm on a daily dose now and feeling much better.

I agree with this. For years I fought fatigue and once I was put on the vitamin D the fatigue is gone. I wish I had known about it sooner, I am so much happier and alert.

Here's another recommendation for getting your vitamin D levels checked!! It never even crossed my mind when my doctor mentioned it a couple years ago. Low vitamin D can have a huge negative impact on your health. I'm now on 1,000 IU's/day and have noticed a big difference in how I feel.

I find that my diet is directly related to my energy level. I know this sounds obvious, but I cleaned my diet up 2 years ago and my energy increased 10-fold. I tend to stop eating when I get stressed, and it makes things 10x worse. Lots of nuts, whole grains, and fresh fruit make me feel best! This could directly correlate to vitamins- I know I'm usually low on D and B12, and get sleepy when I eat them in low doses.

Do you snore? If you do, you might be experiencing sleep apnea without knowing it. It might be a good idea to speak to your doctor about this and maybe get screened for it. A big symptom is being tired or sleepy in the afternoon.

Taking vitamin D3 helped improve my energy levels quite a bit also.

Something else that can help is eating less sugar/carbs during meals.

"Wheat five times a day"

http://blog.trackyourplaque.com/2007/04/wheat-five-times-a-day.html

snippet from the article:

...Did you see the pattern? I pointed out to Terri that what she was doing, in effect, was eating sugar 5 or more times a day. Many of her meals, of course, contained no sugar. All were low fat. But the excessive wheat content yielded quick conversion to sugar–glucose–immediately after ingestion.

Repeated surges of blood sugar like this trigger the excessive insulin response that yields low HDL, higher triglycerides, small LDL, etc., everything that Terri had.

Terri was skeptical when I suggested that she attempt an “experiment”: Try a four week period of being entirely wheat-free. This meant more raw nuts and seeds, more lean proteins like low-fat yogurt and cottage cheese, chicken, fish, lean red meats, more vegetables and fruits.

After only two weeks, Terri dropped 5 1/2 lbs. She also reported that the mood swings she had suffered, afternoon sleepiness, and uncontrollable hunger pangs had all disappeared. The mental cloudiness that she had experienced chronically for years had lifted....

I agree w/pps that it might be a vitamin deficiency. My dr. also increased my B12 to 5,000 mcg per day, 2,500 taken morning and afternoon. I have a neurological disease that also causes extreme fatigue, so I'm on 100 mg Provigil twice a day, which really helps. Thank goodness it comes in generic and only costs me $5 a month, because the brand name is obscenely expensive. We have an excellent prescription plan, but it wouldn't cover Provigil!

I have made an appointment for a sleep study in December. I'm pretty sure that is the problem. Has anyone ever had one? What can I expect.

If you are eating a carb heavy lunch, that could aslo make you tired. It's called carb crash...insulin levels spike quickly and thendrop. Make sure your breakfast and lunches have enough protein to offset it.

I was able to do the study at home. I just took home some equipment and slept with it for a night. I brought it back the next day and in a few more days had the result. Not a big deal.
