Is anyone else bothered by this?

First off, I understand the desire for anonimity. But lately it seems that no one ever states where they are from. (Oh, and I'm not really bothered but it prevents me from getting a complete picture).

Not that it's any of my business, but a lot of threads are about the economy. I just got done reading one about restaurants being packed.

I'm always so curious where people come from when they post threads related for the economy. I guess I'm just really curious where things are good, and where (geographically) things have slowed down.

Not looking for an argument, but I would love to see folks who post on threads about the economy maybe include their state (and ideally a nearby city) in their post. :goodvibes

That's close enough to being considered "personal information" to me. You won't find me posting specifics.

I sometimes mention it, but since I have a Detroit Tigers D as my avatar, I assume it is obvious. :-)

The only times that I notice that someone hasn't listed the state they live in is when they respond in a thread and say things like "Gas has gone down in price around here!" or "We're getting a terrible storm here!" or "The cost of living is crazy here!" or something else relevant to where they live, and I then look to the left and can't see where "here" is! :confused3

Yeah, I love it when people ask if they should fly or drive to WDW, and there is no location. I'm thinking, well, if you live in Tampa, I'd recommend driving. :rotfl2:

And that's fine if you're not asking for feedback about the economy. It just irks me when folks talk about foreclossures, dining out, Christmas budgets, etc, and want input.

If I lived in Beverly Hills my lifestyle would be far different then if I lived in Detroit. (no offense to Detroit folks, but I understand it's particularily rough at this time and I hope things turn around soon).

I've noticed that too. I get that people don't want to give out exact details (I don't either), but a general idea is nice.

But I do think sometimes it's easier to give your own possibly biased opinion about the economy/COL/weather, whatever when nobody knows where you are from. Suppose there are other people around the DIS who are from the same area you are and you say "you can't live in city X on less than $100,000 a year" and then someone comes on and says "strange, I live in city X quite comfortably for $50,000 a year." That kind of makes the first person look like they are exaggerating the cost of living.

It's a lot easier to just throw around strong claims about where you live when there is no one who can contradict you because nobody knows where you live!

On the economy issue, I am in Southeastern MI (west of Detroit) and on Friday night we went out to eat. Stopped at Red Robin but there was a huge number of people waiting to be seated so we left. Then we went to a Mexican restaurant which was more crowded than usual (though we suspected it was the live entertainment that was drawing people in).

After dinner we went to a party of about 20 people. At least four of them that we knew/chatted with were having economic problems (were either currently unemployed, soon to be unemployed, or unable to work because of a short-term disability issue.)

That only works if the people reading your posts know what the Detroit Tigers are. I don't, and your avatar is very mysterious to me!

OP I agree, if someone is talking about something region-based, they really need to state where they are talking about.

Nope, doesn't bother me. If people want to keep their privacy, I respect that.

And it really doesn't matter because there is often so much diversity even within a state or general area.

For instance - your area just voted down your school bond issues. So, you could say "the economy stinks here, we couldn't even get a bond issue passed for our overcrowded schools."

Yet, 30-40 miles north, a couple of districts got their bond issues passed. So the residents there can say "the economy isn't so bad here, we even voted to up our taxes a bit for our overcrowded schools"

My area - we have one place that is thriving, actually booming. Then you have other areas close by that are depressed.

Unless somebody wants to give their actual town, which would be way too much info, you really can't draw any conclusions about how their state is doing by them saying the economy stinks here, because 20 or 30 miles away, it might be the complete opposite.

True....although I voted for the school district and the Library funding we were defeated. However, Douglas County voted 40% for Obama and 57% for McCain which is earth shattering. I was pleased to see the tides turning. I respect folks privacy, I'm only asking that when people ask "have you noticed..." kind of questions that they'd include a bit more info.

Make a note.j/k. I live in Boise Idaho, Sumpter Oregon and Tarpon Springs Florida. That's why I don't have anything listed under my name .... never know where I'll be ....;)

Just ate in Tarpon last night..Mr. Souvlaki! Had the left over greek chow-mein for dinner.:goodvibes

I wouldn't say that it bothers me, but I am notoriously curious, so I hate not knowing.

Exactly.. And I can think of several DISers offhand that insist the economy is absolutely thriving - at it's "highest ever" - in their neck of the woods, but continually refuse to give so much as a "general" area - even when pointedly asked..

Everyone knows where I am.. Upstate NY - two different areas of it depending on the time of year..

I don't mind listing where I live. I'll even say that we are just to the north of Dallas. I give no other info and if someone can find me in this town of 100,000, I'll be very impressed.

We are in one of those areas that haven't been too badly affected as far as jobs and housing prices goes. Layoffs and foreclosures are high though.

I agree - the only time it bugs me is when those people respond to the comments about the economy, unemployment, etc. Just don't respond to those threads if you're not going to indicate about where in the country you're in.

I live in the 'burbs near San Francisco. There are parts of the Bay Area that are doing OK and there are areas that have been hit hard by the housing problems.

I agree. Please don't comment on these threads, if you're too nervous about revealing that you live in a city or state of over 1 million and you just think we'll be knocking at your door. Get a grip!
It is one thing to be cautious, but another to be paranoid.

Actually, you don't have your location listed. People who "know" you well on here might know that, but everyone else is clueless. I did know you were somewhere in the Northeast from reading lots of your posts over the years.

Like others, I totally get privacy concerns, but it also drives me crazy when people assume everyone knows where they are from. I see it as sort of a "I'm only talking to my clique who already know my location, not the rest of you" kind of thing. Then I'm stuck trying to figure out where this storm (or whatever) everyone is discussing is.

KY in KYdisneyfans means Kentucky.
Georgetown is listed as my location.

That would put me about 12 miles north of Lexington, 65 miles east of Louisville, and 65 south of Cincinnati.

Other landmarks that you may know my area by:
-The KY Horse park is less than 5 minutes away, I pass it at least 4x a day.
-The largest Toyota plant nationwide is here, and is probably the only auto plant in the country actually looking for help right now. We make Camrys and the new Venza here, among others.
-The University of Kentucky is about 20 minutes away, Go CATS!!

The economy in the bluegrass region has not seen the decrease that the rest of the country has seen. The high unemployment rate is from eastern KY with many counties having rates over 10%. The bluegrass region(Lex and surrounding counties) is under 6%, with some individual counties under 5%.

Healthcare is HUGE here, 3 hospitals are under construction from the ground up within an hour's drive. UK and EKU in Richmond employ thousands. Amazon.com has a huge distribution center here, Toyota employs 7,000+. Lexmark is big but have laid some people off. I would say the for every 5 restaurants that open here, 1 closes, even now. We have a new 40 story highrise that is under construcion in Lexington, ground was cleared and broken in August. There are talks of a new arena to replace Rupp also. Not too far away are major supply warehouses for Family Dollar, SavALot, and Wal Mart, all chains doing well during the downturn.

For anyone with healthcare experience looking for a move, this area is a great place to live and jobs are plentiful. 1 hospital alone has 64 openings right now.
