Is anyone else afraid to post to certain posts?

I was reading the CB and there is this post about Bush. I was going to try and post something and then thought better of it. Usually I just skip over those posts and don't even read them. I'm not talking just posts about Bush but any that are really "the States" posts. I don't want to start a debate I was just wondering if I was the only one. I have made many friends here and in "real life" who live in the States so I don't hate them, just find it hard to take sometimes. Boy am I in a mood or what!!!! I am not trying to be nasty, just curious.

I try to stay away from anything of a political nature, not being a politically minded person to start with that is quite easy.
I know where you are coming from and it is just a fact of life that people from different countries have different senses of humour.
I have found American people to be wonderful people, if you talk to them one on one. They are great, friendly, helpful.
I have noticed that it is okay for them to tease/make fun of say Canadians "eh", but they don't tolerate it too well when it is turned back on them. My BIL lives in the states, for example, we met his girlfriend (American) a few years back, she was okay for a while but now we find out that she took offence to some of the teasing our 18 year old son was doing, strictly good natured.
So in the interest of not causing any more trouble on the DIS boards than I already do, (dress codes of the cruise ships etc!!!)
I avoid those sorts of topics.
As a sidenote, I have looked at the debate boards a few times and most of the topics appear to be of a political nature.

I do too just because I hate to fight over trivial things with strangers...

Have you ever noticed that some people's posts always seem to be negative and put downs of others?

There are a few (and I mean no more than 4 or 5) Disers on this site that I ALWAYS find them to be looking down at others or rude. I know that you can't tell anything about a person from their posts most of the time but I think as a Canadian:p we sense these things.

So if I see these people post to a subject, I stay away from it because I don't want someone to make me feel bad. (This is on planning threads and not on the debate board)

Maybe I'm just sensitive but I think I can tell if a person is unhappy in their life and needs to bring others down. When I'm about to get mad at them, I think that they must have a bad life. They must feel like outsiders and eat lunch alone in a corner as they don't fit in. Then I feel sorry for them and stop thinking about them.

Does that make any sense to anyone but me??? I leave for WDW tomorrow so my brain is on overload.:hyper:

I agree that there are certain people who can never seem to say anything nice. When I see their names on as posting I usually check just to see what they have said this time. Some seem to have the attitude that whatever they say/think is the only right thing. I have been called some nasty things and I just have a good laugh about it, cause it really is funny. I try very hard to be neutral in my own postings, not really supporting one side or the other.
Also there are some posters that are always seeming to get picked on.
Anyway, PhotobearSam I hope that you have a wonderful time at Disney, enjoy I will envy you while you are gone. And then in January when I go for 1 day at Disney and a 3 day Disney Cruise, it will be your turn to envy me :p

I tend to avoid controversial posts and don't go near the Debate Board, but there's one person on the Resorts Board who is always so negative and one day (I must have been PMSing ;)) I sort of let her have it...just asked her to please stop being so negative in her posts. I can't believe I actually did it but I just hate when you see a new DISer asking an innocent question only to have the same individuals jump on them...had someone done that to me when I first asked a question, I would never have come back...and look at all these great people I would never have met. :) That was my "one & only" and I don't plan to do it ever again. I just close the thread now & move on.

Anyway, just want to tell you Sam that I hope you & Richard have a wonderful vacation. You're leaving at the perfect time. We're having our first real snowfall today and it looks like we have a bit more coming...looks like you're going to be getting it too. Be sure to soak up that Florida sunshine because it looks like winter has officially arrived in Eastern Canada. :(

Photobear what you said made sense to me. Have a great trip. I can't wait for mine. Well, I am really glad that I am not the only one. And I think you are right. They are okay will it coming here but have a have a harder time going the other way (not all of course). There are things I would like to say about the political situation but know that if I say anything at all I will be flamed and I really don't need that. But is not saying anything really the right thing to do all the time. I'd be afraid if everyone around me was always a yes person to someone who really needed to be said no to. Boy I think I'm pms'ing now.

I read your post with interest...my own two cents....probably best to stay away from political topics.

On the other hand, perhaps posting on the Canadian board would
be an interesting way to "test the waters" and of course, you're directing your comment to fellow Cdns. I don't believe there even IS a Cdn community board, so go for it in the lone "all-purpose" Canada board!

I'm a beginner poster who like you, felt the need to speak my mind on a previous post...you'll love this because it involves Canada!...my issue and post title was "No Complaints about Lack of "At-par" Specials, Please" and basically spoke my mind which putting it directly was "If you're Cdn, and you want to come to the US, visit a US vacation spot, you should expect to pay US dollars, and shouldn't feel you have a right to "at-par" deals"

True, I wasn't very sensitive to the Cdn viewpoint, BUT, that was MY particular viewpoint on the issue, and what else are these boards for? So I posted...it was interesting to see all the superfluous stuff that came back defending the "right" of Cdns to get a better deal (some quite hilarious) but nothing changed my mind in the end on that topic and I stand by my original line of thinking.

Maybe a rule of thumb is "if you stray from neutral territory on a given issue and head towards negativity...you'll be sure to rankle someone!"

Anyway, enjoy the rest of the T-Giving (kidding!) weekend!

jersey shark:

Yea, if we couldn't argue what would we have left in life.
A little healthy bickering and disagreeing and looking at other people's opinions is good for us.
It is what keeps us "young" and our minds healthy.
Of course it is only good when the arguing is done in a good natured, non combative way.
Being deliberately mean and nasty is not good.
So any time you want to have a little fun come on over to the Canadian board and chat a while.
::yes::

I read these boards and have learned alot. I tend not to post much as most of my questions are already answered. I find this to be the most "civilized" board I have ever been on.
There are very few negative people here. Everybody has the right to there own opinion...as long as they respect others! Wouldn't it be a boring world if we were all of the same mind!!!!

absolutely DCinNS what a boring world it would be

Jersey shark I read your post. I was happy with the VISA at par I got from Disney but then I look for deals wherever I go but especially in the States when my money doesn't go as far. No I didn't "expect" a deal but was happy to get it. I don't mind another person's point of view, I figure everyone should have one (LOL) I don't mind a little arguing back and forth unless it gets vicious. It's funny but when I took my dgrdd on the Disney Cruise and wasn't happy at all with it I mistakenly posted that. Boy did I get slammed. It was really funny too because I had written that it was only my experience and that we observed others getting good service. But political things are way too scary on the other board. That's why I put this post here. I knew that the replies would probably be okay. I really appreciate all the replies here.

What an interesting post!! Like most of you, I've wanted to reply to some controversial posts on the community board, but usually, I don't. I really don't like confrontation so I avoid it wherever possible. However, I have posted on a couple threads. I took a lot of time thinking out my response and trying to state my opinion in a non-accusatory way. The result? I got attacked anyway. I wish we could all state our opinion while still respecting the opposing opinions out there as well. The war in Iraq was and continues to be very controversial and while I have strong opinions regarding it, I've decided to keep my opinions to myself. I've met too many wonderful people here to risk getting into big debates anymore. The DIS is my new addiction and I don't want to give it up! ;)

CJK I feel exactly the same way. I really don't want a fight but sometimes would like to vent my own feelings about things since I do have opinions but don't want to create a problem here on the DIS. It is a place I can post about things and get answers. I don't need any stress from here.

I too think very carefully and try to word any replies in as non-confrontational, neutral "tone" as I can, but usually it doesn't matter anyway because someone seems to take offense.

I know what you mean CJK, sometimes I feel like I am just lurking around the edges trying to participate but trying not to be noticed also.

I really enjoy the discussion boards, especially the community board. I agree this quickly becomes an obsession and I too would hate to have to give it up because I was being shunned or dissed all the time like happens whenever certain people post. It doesn't seem to matter how innocent a question or comment they make they are always attacked.

You are definitely not alone. I am often afraid to post. I am sometimes astounded how some poor person make a seemingly harmless post, and the wrath of "those who know all" falls upon them like a ton of bricks.

Sometimes I type out a reply and then delete it before posting. Somehow that gets it out of my system.

faithinkarma that's a good idea. I just might try that and see how it works for me. I guess one other thing that could be tried is to actually post a reply (carefully worded of course) and then never go back to that post, although it might follow you with other posts hmmmmmmmmmm I think I like your way.
tigercat

faithinkarma, I do that too, sometimes I click on reply and then think better of it and change my mind.

That edit key comes in real handy sometimes too, for when I get brave and actually post MY opinion and then think, wait maybe I better not say that, and then I edit my post!

Sometimes when people are really rude and mean and nasty I want to tell them to smarten up and play nice.::yes::

I don't ever respond to the Iraq/Bush posts. The "vocal" American viewpoint to the situation is very, very different than the viewpoint of most Canadians. I do notice, though, that the Americans with the anti-Bush view are also very hesitant to post since many of the pro-Bush people can be very nasty and narrow minded.

Reading some of those threads actually scares me.

Oh dear , nasty and narrow minded, Well as a Canadian I think that we are very smug. Now lets see what happens.
