Is any job "beneath you"?

After spending one half hour solid - scrubbing my father's toilet today - I dare to say NOTHING is beneath me!

Funny you should ask....
Up until a few months ago I was working in the marketing field as a graphic designer. I did page layouts, websites, sell sheets logos, blah blah blah. Went to college for it and everything. I also worked as a waitress and a delivery driver on weekends to help make ends meet. (Well, okay, to feed the Disney beast actually;) ) I found myself working 70+ hours a week, mostly from home, but I did have an office. I also take care of my elderly mother and have 4 kids.
I don't know, guess one day I just snapped when I heard myself say for the one hundredth time, "Sorry, no, I can't do ____, I have a deadline...." I was missing out on my life & my kids life. I really had to stop and look at what was important to ME. Being around for my family before they ALL grow up and leave what I wanted more than anything. So I decieded to keep the job that had the least amount of stress, aloud me time off when ever I felt like it and earned enough to survive.
I make less than min. wage per hour but the tips are great. I earn as much now working 4 - 10 hours days than I made working 70+ every day of the week. Plus, I can stop at my house if the kids need me or if my mom needs me.
Life is too short to stress all the time.

I was about to whine about my temporary pole climbing position until I read RickinNYC's post. Now I won't. :)

Thanks for the powerful message Rick........

Ok, I have to ask. "Pole climbing"?????

LOL!!!!.....Snoopy works for Verizon and they are about to go on strike...she just moved from an HR jockey to a pole climbing jockey!!!!!

Rick...I've just spent the last 20 mins searching your posts and reading them....I reallly enjoyed your insight....I remembered you from your post on the trip report board requesting help planning your special night.....I can't wait to hear how it turns out....

I too say nothing is beneath me....I have a college degree but because I want to be flexible for my kids and make a decent living I now clean houses for a living...I'm I satisfied with my job...no not all them time...but I do enjoy lots of my clients...but I really enjoy be able to leave my job for the 15 min school skits that are put on in my kids classrooms during the school year....that makes it worth it....If I held a "real" job I'd never be able ot just pop by and enjoy these things......

I am at a point that as long as I could provide for my son, I would be happy. I hated living paycheck to paycheck and barely making it and never having money to put away for vacations, retirement or college.

I am scared to death that I may have to go back ot doing that now that Jim still wants us to go separate ways.

there are jobs I would prefer not to do, but if it meant putting food in my kids mouth or loosing my house, there is no job I would not do.

Ditto.

OOOooooohhhhh!!! Now I remember about Snoopy. I saw her pic on the site not long ago. If I had to do it, I would, but I'd be shaking in my size 11.5's!

Snoopy, I salute you! <salute>

And a direct comment from Zurgswife to little nothing me! Woo hoo! I finally made it to the DIS big time. A celebrity! ;)

I'll definitely let you all know how things go with our upcoming trip. Even though I'm very confident of the outcome, I'm still nervous. I want everything perfect!

But we pay our bills on time, rent is always paid in full every month, our pantry and fridge are well stocked. We have clothes on our backs. And I can save a little money

Great post and just about sums it all up.

My folks were depression kids. I'm not sure how our society went from living hand-to-mouth to I-want-it-all-and-now but it doesn't seem to be making us very happy.

I quit nursing four years ago to be a stay-at-home-daughter to an infirmed mom. It was either that or a nursing home. Tightening up the spending? Oh, yeah. Regrets? No. I'm not trying to win big in this life, it's the next lifetime I'm prepping for. And there's only one chance to get ready for that. What's that biblical verse...Where your heart is, there lies your treasure also?

The trick is determining what are the real priorities in life.

RickinNYC: what a wonderful post, thank you for sharing your story.:D

You have also given me that little push to final take that leap in a career change.
