Is a Beagle a good dog for an ADHD boy?

Times that by a hundred and that is what my beagle sounds like. All day, every day. Oh, and he snores so loud my daughter can hear him from the floor below.

I think you have good points and I do agree with you - I think I just wasn't clear enough in my post.
I figured as much. I'm just always thinking about people reading these threads who might be looking to get a dog for the first time, or not understanding why something bad happened, etc, and figure it can't hurt to point things out. Thanks for being a good sport. (And I would love to see pics of your dogs some time.)

HA! At first I had no idea what you were saying! :rotfl2:

I grew up in a neighborhood with lots of Beagles and am very familiar with that noise.

;) Our downstairs neighbor in our first apartment had a beagle and a bassett hound. Day and night baying. Sweet doggies, but they drove us and everybody else bonkers!

One of my co-workers has a beagle. When someone asks her about her dog, like what kind it is, she always says, "A f$%&ing beagle!" She says he barks constantly! We have 2 Shelties, though, who are yet another notoriously barky breed. They live up to it, but they have so many other wonderful qualities that we deal with it. If you are looking for something similar in size to Beagles, you might want to consider checking out Shelties. They can be shy with strangers and do bark, but they are sweet with their families, love to fetch and play (but are also happy napping with you on the couch) and are so smart and easy to house break.

Hey, did someone ask for pictures of my dogs? Well, it just so happens...

Here is Jack. My first shepherd, my running buddy, my foot warmer, and the love of my life. This picture was taken while he was performing his duty as ring-bearer at our wedding. :rotfl:

And here is my velcro dog Sasha, looking very ashamed after I caught her taking a nap with one of my socks and a stuffed Figment that she somehow got off of my desk. Not chewing, just.... enjoying. :lmao:

Yup, I will show off the furbabies at any opportunity!

My beagle boys are excellent with children. Love to roll around and play with kids - especially fetch (have yet to meet a beagle that doesn't).

My beagle does not play fetch

mabey it is because of his background he was born in a lab and was with 2 different families before us

Is their some type of ADHD community that you could ask for suggestions? They may be able to do some sort of checklist to determine what is best for your son. Bear in mind, any rough play should be avoided and your son should be part of the training process-it would help them both bond. Could he handle something like rally or agility? ( I'm sorry, I don't know much about ADHD)

I would suggest a lab-they are all around great dogs and very tolerant. It sounds like you want something smaller or I would also suggest a Newfoundland. Very VERY tolerant, patient and gentle. Ours is 8 months old, and last night DD laid nose to nose with her, with her fingers in her mouth, counting her teeth. Every once in a while, DD got a lick and would giggle. If she sees a small child/dog, she automatically lays down so they can check her out-and she does this all on her own.

Of course, she's 90 pounds, and has some serious growing to do, so that is a deterent for some, but it's all worth it.

My ds 8 is very adhd. Frequently at my mama's house, one neighbor has a dalmation and one a black lab. When the kids were smaller and used a kiddie pool, the dalmation always jumped in the pool with them and loves to run with ds even now that he has to be going to 10 years old. I think its a very hyper breed if it can keep up with my child, lol. The lab rolls around the yard with ds, plays ball, very sweet. My mama's dachsunds 10 & 13 on the other hand, don't like a lot of attention from my ds, they are more adult lap dogs. Personally, I would check the shelter for a dog (not puppy) and see which one takes to your ds.

I agree with this, 100%. You could not get a better dog for your son. I really believe a Golden comes from heaven. I have never seen one get upset with the owner.

I have a very moody/nervous Golden. He really dislikes kids and most men/teenage boys :confused3. No idea why, but I put him up when little kids come over because I wouldn't put it past him to bite someone.

My shepard mix is this way too!! We adopted Harleigh from the shelter. My DD has ADHD, is very loud and Harleigh never has shown any signs of aggression.

As long as the family has no allergies, I think a shepherd mix from a pound is the best way to go. Go to a few, a test drive the dogs. Shepherd mixes are absolutely wonderful and very smart.

I agree. Both my shepard mixes were brilliant and healthy. Both from the shelter and I don't have a clue why anyone would give them up. The beagle on the other hand, as much as we love him, I know why.

I too was going to suggest a golden retriever as from personal expierence and knowing other owners of the breed find they are the most lovable, never harm a flea type of dog with lots of energy and love to play

Lol...you quoted me, but I have a moody/nervous Golden that hates kids!

My DS9 is ADHD and Aspergers. He had wanted a dog for three years and we finally gave in a few months ago. It's been the best decision we ever made. I did a lot of research because I also wanted a very tolerant breed and my DS11 has allergies so we ended up getting a cockapoo. She is the best. She endures his endless hugs and greets him with such love every morning. You will not regret it! He seems calmer and more secure since our lastest addition! PMme is you are interested in more info and I'll send you a pic and give you the breeders info! Good Luck!

I have to confess that I have not read every post on this thread so this may have been mentioned before. I'm just offering a suggestion to the OP. I've met some wonderful beagles, but I think you are looking for the right dog, not just the right breed, and have had a bad experience.

Can you and your son volunteer at a local rescue as dog walkers or dog socializers? These services are always needed. This would enable you to get to know a lot of different dogs well, and make a really informed decision on the best dog to match your home, your son and your activity level.

Just a thought. :)

Thanks for all the great advise!!! I'll be showing my DH this thread so we can sort through all the great ideas. We went to PETCO today where they have adoption dogs on Saturdays. There was a lady there who finds foster homes for dogs. I'm going to email her with what we're looking for and she's going to look for us. I think those of you that recommended a dog from the shelter are right--I think we need to match the dog not the breed. We definatley want the right dog for us. We're not rushing into anything--just going to keep our eyes open until the right one comes along. :lovestruc

A golden retriever would be an excellent dog to have.

My vote also....My kid rides around on ours daily, never a growl, sigh or anything....the dog is so loyal and loving.
