Is a $5 Silver Certificate only worth $5?

I have a $5 Silver Certificate that just happened to pass through my hands quite a few years ago. Actually, my DH noticed it. I have kept it in an envelope because...............actually, I don't know why.

Does anyone know if they are worth anything?

I don't know the answer but I have a few myself. When I worked at DD many interesting bills/coins passed through my hands and I kept them all (exchanging them for regualr money, of course.)

They do not make them anymore. They are very old so my guess is they are worth something and will be worth more the longer you hold on to them.

I always keep $2. bills and $1 coins even though they aren't worth anything...just because they're different than the norm.

I've come across some silver coins (dimes, quarters and half dollars I think) and a few silver certificates. Now I've got the urge to go through my collection!

I googled it. If it is a run of the mill silver certificate, it is probably worth 5.50 - 5.75. If it has a star before the serial number, it might be worth more. I saw an ebay auction for one which was from the `800's and it was up to $355.

So do you have a star? How old is the certificate?

also what is the condition. I recieved a 1934 $10 silver certificate in change froma hotdog place. These are not that uncommon because after the crash nobody trusted banks. They kept the cash in their mattress, apparently forever...

I just looked. Nope, no star. It says "Series of 1934 D".

I guess I'll just hang on to it. I don't know if it will ever be worth anything, but maybe someday my grandchildren will think it's cool to have a piece of currency that is so old!
