Is 12X12 ceramic tile too big for a 6.5' X 4.10' bathroom floor?

I am trying to decide on ceramic tile for our bathroom. I thought I needed small tile since it was such a small room, but lots of people say the smaller the room, the bigger the tile. I have been told it makes the room look bigger. Any suggestions? Oh, also, how hard is it to keep the grout clean?

I can't answer the grout question but I love tile so I would not hesitate to put that size down. If you like the look and the color...go for it!

I've been a floor tile sales person for many yaers in another life, and the only thing I can say is that...there are no rules. You just have to be conscious that the biggert the tiles will be , the more slipperry they will be., the joints action as an anti skid. So if you go with a bigger tile , you will definitally need a carpet of some kind beside the bath/shower. What I likes , personnaly , was the smaller type of tiles ( 2x2, 4x4) and make some type of patern: allwhite with black around , stuff like that , very classic. if you go bigger , you can put them in a dimond shape ( Now , my english is not perfect , so I hope you understant what I mean)This will give perspective to the room.


Fot the grout , you have many solution: first , choose one that countains an epoxy additif, that makes them less porous. They sell all kind of colors , but I almost always suggested some type of grey , since the joints always en up this color anyway. You can put a seasler on the grout as well. it takes a bit of patience , but worth the effort ( obviously , more work with smaller tiles )

We put 12" x 12" tile down in a bathroom that was about that size. I wouldn't hesitate to use that size again--it looks great!

No. I have just put tile down in our bathroom and the floor space covered measures about that same size. Looks fine with the larger tiles. I got a sort of rough...well not really rough but textured I guess...tile, so it wouldn't be as slippery, but still have a rug near the shower for added safety. Perfectly smooth ceramic tile is very slippery when wet!!!! The tile I chose is from a company called Florida Tile and it is style Mendocino, color Blanc. It's sort of an off-whitish color with some speckling and texture to it so it doesn't show every piece of dust and dog hair that floats by. I like it, it's pretty neutral, and not exorbitantly expensive...kind of a mid-range priced tile.

We also put that size tile in an area just a little bigger than what you stated and in a bathroom that is smaller. Both look great. We didn't get the slicky kind so it isn't slippery.
Like toto2 said, match a darker grout to your tile. We used gray in one bathroom and a brown color in the other. We also sealed it once the grout was dry. We haven't had any trouble with keeping it clean--but one is the guest bath that rarely gets used and we have no children living at home so it is just hubby and I in the other bath.
If you have never had tile before, you are going to love it.
