Uh,what other posts have I made about going ons at my mothers Church? She lives in North Kingstown RI,so I would assume the church is there....The only other thing I ever remember posting about her church is that they had a a Petition against gay marriage,which she didn't sign

But either you are a big, fat liar and slandering the church (which I seriously doubt) or you've had extraordinarily odd experiences with Catholics.

This "Vote for Bush" thing takes the cake, though. Catholics are pretty liberal - except for that abortion issue. And there isn't any rule about voting and going to hell.

I'm surprised that nobody in the church demanded to know why they were doing that or report them.

My mother has had one experience..One... Apparently you have missed many posts where I have defended the Catholc Church or have tried to counter misconceptions about the Church. I should have added that it was the Abortion issue that was discussed when this was brought up.. I was also very careful in my post not to state that it was done from the alterr, during Mass,,because I don't know the context in which it was said .. I did mention this on the forum, and that was a while ago,and I beleve mentoned it was due to the abortion issue

Good. Hopefully my minister (in my church, we rotate every few years) will shut the heck up. Gee, how I loved hearing (on Easter Sunday no less) about how Jane Fonda was a wonderful person who uses her celebrity to promote her causes.

With this example, the minister is NOT breaking tax law when it comes to exempt status. Only if the minister said, "Vote for Fonda" or "Vote against Fonda" would it be, to the IRS, an issue.

Wrong choice of words, I admit. I'll rephrase. The government certainly has the power to impose certain rules tax exempt organizations, including churches, have to follow. The churches obviously are not allowed to politicize as the government has the power to impose consequences if they do. Also, I admit this is just one example. I am not well versed in this aspect of the law either.

The government has no power to make churches follow any rules that I am aware of. I thought it was the other way around, that we're all free to worship as we see fit and they can like it or lump it. But you all are probably much more aware of tax-exempt stuff and polical matters.

I think this is going to be a political thread and I know almost zip about political crap and leave that to you experts.

My mother has had one experience..One... Apparently you have missed many posts where I have defended the Catholc Church or have tried to counter misconceptions about the Church. I should have added that it was the Abortion issue that was discussed when this was brought up.. There are just some very odd comments, like this one. Of course, now that I know it wasn't said during mass but in private to your mother, I find it all the more reprehensible.

On the one hand, it is good to know that church isn't preaching that people should vote for Bush. On the other, is is vile for someone - anyone, let alone a priest! - to intimidate and threaten an old woman into voting for the candidate he likes.

And the church should be made aware of it.

I never saw purses in the UK! Italy and Mexico...I confess, I've got some from both...but I never saw the UK.

Will be at WDW next month and must now check out purses in UK.

If was anything like what our Catholic church did, it was through a pamphlet. No candidates were named, and no political parties were singled out. However, it went something like this (paraphrased, of course)...

The Catholic church believes in caring for the poor, the sick, etc. Good works are seen as going hand in hand with faith for salvation. Charity and caring for the poor, etc is one of the many obligations of a Catholic. However, the primary obligation is protection of innocent life, both at the beginning and the end of life. Candidates that support the teachings behind Church doctrine related to charity but that don't support the protection of innocent human life are not supporting Church teachings and careful consideration should be given when preparing to vote for such candidates.

DH and I looked at the pamphlet and just said "WOW!!" Our impression was that the pamphlet was right at the edge, if not over, the line.

Nooo. I don't know the context in which it was said,which is exactly why I'm beng careful in how I word it.. It could have been said at mass, During reconcilliation, I honestly don't know how it was said.... Now If you want to know something really shocking that was done at Church,Here you go..At Mission San Louis Rey in Oceanside Ca ,at Christmas Mass at least 3 years in a row, The Priests(monks?) dressed up like Santa Claus, while passing out communion

The only thing I am certain of,is that whatever it was,it was said by the Priest.... I don't believe it came from a Pamphlet

As for the Catholic church being very liberal, that really depends on where you are. Our diocese (Arlington) is one of the most conservative in the country - we were just permitted to have female altar servers a few months ago. It was left to the discretion of the priests (our parish doesn't allow girls to be altar servers).

There are some parishes in the diocese that are more liberal than others, but for the most part, it is a very conservative diocese, as opposed to the Washington archdiocese, which is much more liberal.

Jenny I figured your Mom belonged to the same church my aunt did because the pastor there preached the same thing and they have lost about 1/2 of thier families due to this one priest. My aunt decided to have a memorial Mass for my Mom at this church. This was arround Christmas time and he preached about how we should boycott Macy's because they don't say Merry Christmas but Happy Holidays. One of my Mom's good friend's were there who happened to be Jewish I was totally embarassed by this mans behavior considering my Mom was the biggest shopper going. I knew that I would never let my Aunt have a Mass said for her again in that church--It is located in Garden City.

I'm putting this on my list of "Californians do wacky stuff." Must be all the sunshine and sand. I always cut Californians slack. If it were Ohio or Minnesota, I'd find it more odd.

But dressing up like Santa is a heck of a lot better than scaring old ladies into voting for the candidate YOU like.

That's just vile.

The Catholic church, though - with the exception of abortion - is very liberal in its ideals and causes. But I know that abortion is THE dividing issue for many and I just stay out of it. I can fight both sides on that one and don't want to end up arguing with myself.

And that's of my income only. DH has this, "I'll leave God alone if he'll leave me alone" thing going on, so he doesn't go...or tithe. Don't get me started on him!

I was one of the very first female altar Girls in the Archdiocese of Boston,back in around 1982... I think that's pretty cool

My DD initially showed some interest in it, but as we talked about it, it seemed more like she wanted to press the issue on an equality basis, rather than on the basis of really wanting to serve on the altar, if that makes sense. If she really felt that she wanted to do it for spiritual reasons, I would be trying to "work the priests" (so to speak), but just to make a point? Nah, not worth it.

DS, on the other hand, loves it. He's very reverent, very sincere, very totally opposite how he is any other time.

No, we don't have Girl Altar-Boys, either. I'm fine with that, not battling that one out! I meant the church's ideals, their causes and what side of the political divide it falls on. They like the government helping the poor and sick (then they don't have to is what I figure) - that kind of thing.

The only thing I can think of that is "conservative" is the abortion thing. Not fighting that one, either.
