The authorities in Basra will not co-operate with British troops until they get an apology for a raid to free two UK soldiers, its governor has said.
Mohammed al-Waili has also demanded compensation for damage caused by the raid on Monday and a "guarantee that it does not happen again".

Basically, the Iraqi authorities took two members of the SAS into custody. They alleged that the men had shot and killed Iraqi policemen. They were handed over to the Shia militia. The Iraqi central Government demanded their freedom, but this was ignored. British troops, unable to free the men through diplomatic means, stormed the prison, demolishing a substantial part of it in the process.

Now the Iraqis are demanding a full apology or else they will no longer co-operate. The Iraqi central Government denies that there is a problem. Two tanks have been set on fire by civilians, chanting "Murderers Out".

If the far southern Shiites rise up, it's over. This makes Blair's position even more difficult as well

There are rumours about that the British are going to start a phased withdrawal pretty soon - seems there are some who now see the occupation as part of the problem...

Well it is THEIR country. It's kind of like that obnoxious relative that just wont leave...I'm thinking they're starting to "overstay their welcome."

Goodness! The Iraqi government really needs to be the one to ask us to go, though. :(

"handed over to the Shia militia" being a key phrase, which seems like a nice way of saying "handed over to militants for interrogation and possible ransom purposes." Seems they were busted quite publicly and they're not taking it well.

The Iraqi officials in the area now apparently have decided that the British army are assisting in terrorist attacks. Part of the evidence is the huge arsenal found in the troups' car.

News Flash! The SAS do NOT use toothpicks...

Iraqi officials have now issued a warrant for the arrest of the two SAS troops rescued by force. The situation is "volatile" and could spell civil unrest as the central Government unsuccessfully tries to intervene.
