Does anyone have one of these?

DD, 11, saw a TV ad about this, and is asking for one for Christmas. I looked on Amazon.com, and found it, but could only find accessories for 5th grade (DD is in 6th grade).

Are these really worth the 49.99 plus 14.99 per cartridge? And if you have one, does your child really use it? Does it really help with schoolwork? And can you get 6th grade level cartridges?

Thanks, guys!!

I am interested in the answer to this too.

We own a leap pad and DS6 really does enjoy this. DD likes to play with it too. We recently checked out the new "quantum" pad thinking this would be good for DD10. Guess what, the quantum pad is the leap pad in different colors! Quantum books play on the leap pad and leap pad books play on the quantum pad. Just thought I would clue you all in that they are one and the same thing!

I am curious about this IQuest thing. Can someone enlighten us?

What is the Iquest?

Is it the same thing as the Quantum Leap? I bought that for my son this year, and my DD got a Leap Pad last year.

If I think what this is, it is an port where you put the cartridges in, and then the port downloads content from the cartridge to your pc.. am i right?

Anyway, if that is what it is, we have downloaded content before/activity pages, etc, and also activity packs for our Leap Pad, Turbo Twist math.

My son who was in first grade then, siad the Turbo Twist material was too easy for him until we hit about the 5th grade level.

Actually Quantum leap is just a bit different. The style is sleeker, and the pen has a certain erasable point to it, so you can do the erasable activity pages in it. The pen and outside design is different.

I like the fact that Leap Pad books work on it as well, so he can do my daughters stuff if he wanted too, and my daughter who has the Leap Pad can use his books.

The sample book is a little harder, and different concept things in it.

They were both the same price at walmart, so we did the Quantum.

I was looking at the Quantum Pad for my 3rd grader and noticed the same thing -- it's the Leap Pad but with older child material.
Right now it appears that it only goes up through the 5th grade, but there might be plans to expand it.

Right now it appears that the IQuest (which is different) has cartridges for 6-8th grade Social Studies, Science, and Math. There is also an SAT prep which is more expensive - $29.99. I think you also need the Mind Station with this in order to download materials.

I'd be interested if anybody has actually used these products also. :)

DebIA -

I bought the IQuest for my DD10 who is in 5th grade. They have the 6th grade version w/cartridges as well at Walmart, Toys R Us, Target, etc. Each I-Quest comes with one cartridge you can't really see unless you hold the box on an angle and look up into it.

I like that you can look up the textbooks they are using in school and take pop quizzes, chapter reviews, etc.

She didn't want the Quantam Pad, I think she thought it was too much like her younger brothers Leap Pad.

We have not used it yet, it's for Christmas, but I've heard only good things about it from other moms and their kids.

HTH,
Lori

I was just going to post the exact same link Deb, too funny!

I've seen them in the stores. Amazon does have it at a nice price.
As for the content cartridges, be forewarned they may be a little on the "easy" side.

The cartridges are almost the same thing used in the Turbo Twist Math.

Also Mindstation and Leaplink are the same things. WE bought the Leaplink on clearance at Kmart for $10. The mindstation is more.

I have also seen a bundle pack at Target with the Iquest, Mindstation and a cartridge..

I thought about it for my son, but decided on the Quantum.

p.s. I forgot to add that I noticed that all the cartridges and books for Leap Pad can also be used on the Quantam Pad and vice versa. So you can buy one system and buy books/cart. for any age. (as long as they are willing to share the "pad" )

great info everyone!

Is there anything we can use the leap link with?

I know they have the turbo twists and such but will the quantum pad work with the leap link system?

Ok, help me clarify some of the details. This Iquest would be the next step up from quantum/leap pad, right?

Is the Iquest useless without the whole "mindstation" thing? Can it stand on it's own or do you need the hook up? For example Lorix, you said you could look up textbooks, etc, but I don't think you can without this hook up. If you have the mindstation thing, do you work on their website or do you download it to your iquest and work on it?

It sounds like a pretty cool thing for kids at about the middle school age. My DD is in 4th grade so I just bought her a quantum book to be used on DS's leap pad.

Has anyone actually used this thing and do you kids like it/use it? According to the Toys R Us reviews it's a wonderful thing but who knows in real life whether it is after the first week or so.

Binny--

Yes it can.

We have a Leaplink (bought on clearance), leap Pad, Turbo Twist Math, and soon, a Quantum Leap.

All the Leaplink is a device about the size of a computer mouse that plugs into a port in the back of the PC.

The cartridges fit inside the Leap Link... and it transfers the data from the Leap Pad website (where you download stuff), to the cartridge. Then the cartridge goes into whatever hardware platform you wish.. Iquest, Leap Pad, Turbo Twist, etc...

The Mindstation is about the same thing, but more expensive and bigger.

ok we bought the leap link ( on clearance too lol) at TRU last year and havent even opened it yet.

We have the original first year leap pad and I didnt that was compatible, is it really? HMMMPPHHH go figure lol

So the Quantum Pad would be a good choice for Cam this yearI guess, eh? If I can update with the Leap Link system he should be able to get a lot of good out of it!

Thanks for the info!

well there ya go! lol

SonyaF - I was under the impression that it can stand on it's own. You just insert the cartridges. Now I'm curious. I'll have to read the back of the box. It's in the garage, I'll go look now. I'll be back!

The Turbo Twist does work on its own, you don't need to download, same with Leap Pad. the Turbo Twis was good to download because my son thought the already pre programmed thing was too easy.

Which first generation Leap Pad do you have Binny? There was one out about 3 years ago, with a light blue color, and the sample book is a blue background, instead of the current red. (MIL has this one at her house).

We tried some of her books in our current last year Leap Pad, and the software didn't work.

So depending on which generation Leap Pad, it should work. Put it this way, we bought the Leap Pad, Leap Link for my DD last Christmas 2001, and everything worked.

BTW, the cartridges are cheaper at Walmart, than on Amazon.

I'd like to know too, Lorix, because we don't have the rest of the Quantum Leap, Mind Station, or Leapfrog system . . .

Deb, did you try the website for the products.. I have to say the customer service people there are very knowledegable, and very very courteous.

Sonya and DebIA -

phew! (all the xmas gifts are our boat in the garage. I lost my footing coming off it, but the 4 wheeler broke my fall )

OK - from the back of the box it reads:

2 Easy ways to expand with questions based on your school textbooks.

1) Purchase a Mind Station connector and you can:

- download audio quiz games based on your* school textbooks.

- use your printer to print chapter outlines w/summaries, key concepts & vocabulary

* Not all textbooks supported.
Membership fee required after 6 month trial membership ends.

----> OR <----

2) Purchase any iQuest cartridge and your ready to:

- Add new quiz questions based on your school textbook

IT'S EASY

- scroll to find your textbook

- select a chapter and play quiz games to master the material.

So you don't HAVE to buy a Mind Connector, but if you already have one it's even more expandable.

I can't wait to play with it myself :D
