And for pointing out the other possible pitfalls, Jamesmom. (At this point, I'm not really concerned about the internet access. She has a laptop now and has shown no interest in some of the things other teens might experiment with on the internet, she's still a "young" 13. I hesitate to use the word immature, maybe late bloomer would be appropriate. Whatever, I'll take it. Makes my life as a mother much easier. )

I'm going to give it a few weeks and see if she keeps talking about this and pricing them online (yeah, she was doing that). If the fascination holds, I'll probably let her buy it with her birthday money.

I use mine for various apps, the mp3 player function is an after thought. I love it. It operates just like an iphone except it doesn't have wifi (mind doesn't) and I can't use it as a phone.

Yes, Netflix lets you set up parental controls. So does iTunes:

YouTube has parental controls, but apparently they are easily defeated.

She claims that her friends are NOT paying to download videos (they use netflix??), or music (they just load what they already have or use giftcards from birthdays), apps & games (there are plenty that are free??) etc., but I find this pretty hard to believe.

You can believe it

Itunes has a free song of the week, which changes every Tuesday. Sometimes it's something good, sometimes its lousy. Your DD can put any CDs she already owns onto her iTouch.

Many DVDs that you buy these days come with a free 'digital download' copy that you can put onto your itouch as well. Yes, you can stream Netflix movies onto the itouch as well, and some things you can watch on free online services like Hulu, tv network websites, youtube, etc.

Lots and lots of the games and apps are indeed free. Some are full versions, some are trial versions. Even most of the games and apps that you have to pay for cost only 99C or 1.99

And for the times when she wants somthing that isn't free, there is always the iTunes gift card. The iTunes gift card IS the main gift that teens and kids seem to give to each other (and always ask for) in my social circle. Once people know that your DD has an iTouch, you'll be surprised how many people will give that as a gift. As a parent, I find that an iTunes gift card works well as an incentive to get my teenager to do something that I want her to do.

Get a used or refurbished ipod touch. They get scratched and broken easily. Not a child's toy.

You MUST have a valid credit/debit card to use the ipod touch. My advice is to use a prepaid or old card that doesn't have any money on it or ever will.

The 2nd and 3rd generation ipod touch are plentiful because people want the 4th generation that has the camera inside.

Your daughter is telling the truth, there are hundreds of totally free Apps and Music to download from the apple itunes store which is built-in to the ipod. If you are currently paying for Netflix, you can watch video for free on ipod.

Not only does the new 4th generation ipod have a camera is lasts more than twice as long on a single charge and it performs like it should.

DD has gone thru $100's of iTune cards in the last 2 years!

Was beginning to think my son was the only one who does this. None of the kids I know have spent less than a hundred on their music unless they have the CDs or download from sharing programs.

I was thinking the same thing! I know between my daughters itouch and iphone and my itouch and iphone we have spend hundreds of dollars on apps and music. Yes there are free ones and they tend to be lame- the better apps you have to pay for.

When we bought dds their ipod touch, we bought them a case and screen protector. They have been well travelled and used and still look great.

We don't have a credit card linked to either of their itunes accounts, just various itunes cards. When they run out, dds can't download anything.
