iPod Touch - when is the best time..

to purchase one of these????? I have the 1st generation and am thinking of getting the 4th generation for Christmas. But it seems with my luck every time I purchase a gadget the next and best generation/model comes out. I know this one just was released, but will the next one be next fall? AND another concern is if Verizon offers the iPhone in January....does anyone own both the touch and iPhone? I've forever wanted the iPhone, but now I'm not really sure. Any opinions?

I believe one can not be both on the cutting edge of technology and truly budget conscience. I also love my tech gadgets (toys).

I gave up trying to keep up with techonolgy some time ago. I try to buy want in the version that will do everything I want rather than looking at the latest and greatest.


The newest tech is most often the most costly and it may or may not do anything more than the previous generation.

Do you research, find the product you want, then find the best price and just do it.

Or, as Davey Crocket would put it, "make sure your right, then go ahead."

They are usually "refreshed" on a yearly basis. So, find out when the 4th generation was released, and add approximately a year onto that to estimate when the 5th generation will be released.

Keep in mind that the next generation of anything may not be better than what's currently out there. Examples? Glad you asked. The latest iPod Nano is ridiculously underwhelming. The previous generation (with the video camera) was fantastic. Apple really blew it on that line. Also, the current Shuffle is exactly like two generations ago, as the last generation (the stick of Dentyne gum-sized device with controls in the headphone wires) was a complete flop.

My point is this. If a device has exactly what you want right now buy it. Sure, a newer version will inevitably be available at some point... but it might not be better.

I agree with all of you - I also have the 1st generation shuffle for working out and knew that the gum stick verion was a total flop the minute it was announced. Anyway, this newest generation touch has everything I want, for now. Who knows what the next generation will bring, right? With my luck Verizon will anoune the iPhone the week after I get the Touch.
