ipod touch or new iphone?

DS12 has been saving for well over a year for an ipod touch.

I can't think of any reason why he shouldn't get one. He's very responsible, his grades are perfect, he is very organized, keeps his room clean, he's kind, etc. We purchased the $29 refurbed shuffle a while back for him and he never lost it and has gotten well over $29 of enjoyment out of it.

He will use it for music, podcasts, language software and probably many other things as he gets older.

So, an ipod touch or the new iphone coming out next month? He really wants a camera and you can only get that on the iphone.

He doesn't need a phone right now but may eventually. Can he get the iphone and just activate the phone service later? We have wireless internet at the house so will he still be able to access the internet here at home without having the phone service?

Anything else I'm missing?

Sorry, you cannot buy the Iphone without a 2 year contract. Apple did this to keep people from purchasing the phone and having it unlocked to work with T-Mobil.
Oh, and the service has to be with ATT and is $70 per month.

We just replaced DD's phone and saw signage for the new iPhone. I made a comment about it and the AT&T rep said he had never had as many returns of a phone as he had with the iPhone. He said that he had had one as well and it was the worst phone he ever had. Personally, I've never owned one, nor have I had the opportunity to play with one, (and perhaps they've worked the bugs out with the new version) but I thought I'd pass along what he said.

You will pay for the iphone several times over with the cost of service .

Shoot. I didn't know about the mandatory contract. I guess he'll be getting the touch.

Do you think he should wait a while to see if they come out with a new model?

If you want a great phone with internet access and a full keyboard....get a Nokia.....you can use em with any contract

If you want a great MP3 player......get an ipod or a Zune or a Sansa.....or if top sound quality is ytour priority get a Cowon i7

If you want a great camera with an optical zoom lens, look at Samsung, Olympus, Canon etc

the Iphone is a jack of all trades and never has this been truer...it is master of none.

The iphone hasnt taken off over here because it is locked to a single network and although it is the swiss army knive of electronic gadgets each of the components is a compromise

He's set on an Apple product. We are a Mac family and the kids use the computer for their photos, to make slideshows, they make their own music on garageband and are taking classes at the Apple Store this summer. I don't think I could change his mind if I tried.

It looks like he'll be getting the ipod touch. He just has to decide if he wants to buy know or wait and see what happens with the next generation-however long that may be.
