I am looking for something that I can take with me when not home that has access to the internet since I have a "stupid phone" and have no plans to get a smart phone.

Over the summer I looked at the nook but it didn't seem to have full web access. Does it now? I want something that is wireless obviously and can connect wherever there is access. I want more than what the guy at Barnes and Noble said the nook could do. He said it only had access to a web store to buy the books. I want something with full internet capability like the ipod touch or ipad.

I was also thinking of the ipod touch but am having trouble justifying since I have an older ipod already. Is there anything similar to the ipod touch that would work? I might get the ipod touch but am looking at other options.

Any suggestions or ideas would be very appreciated!

Thanks!

I agree with Simba.

If you are looking for an internet device then you will drive yourself batty with one of the eInk readers. They'll access the internet but think of it as something that they can do in a pinch - not a major function.

The nook Color is a crippled Android device that is primarily meant to be a reader. It is possible to root it though to turn it into a more functional machine and for the price is really nice. I have a friend with one and she's managed to put the Kindle Android App on there as well as many others from the Android Marketplace. I've heard they are on sale this week at Best Buy? You might want to check that out.

iPADS are pretty nice but like all Apple products, $$$$.

I have a browser in my Windows Phone, too, and I think in the end it would be better than using the browser in my Kindle 3G.

I'd love one but in no way is it in my price range. Which is why I was looking at the ipod touch or the nook. The ipod touch definitely has more of what I want (and the size I want) but if the nook had good browsing capabilities I was willing to look at it. I realize though that it isn't meant for what I want it for (internet capability, not reading books...I still like actual books).

I suspect when you say, "Nook" (especially calling it similar to the iPod Touch) that you mean the "Nook Color".

If you just mean the regular "Nook" then read messages #41 through #47 in this thread:

Either one. When I looked in the summer I was only looking at the regular nook. I see the nook color is out now and would be a good option if I wanted it for reading but I really just want it for internet. I'm guessing the nook wouldn't be the best choice for someone who just wants this primarily for internet access.

Nooks and Kindles are not meant to browse the internet. You CAN do that but that feature is really for buying more books, not using the ereader as a computer. For what you want, a Smartphone or an IPad is the best option.

Then I rec the ipod touch.

More function than the Nook. And, yes, I used to work at B&N, but if you want function, go for the touch.

Yes, for several reasons, as indicated in the linked thread: It's simply not made for it, it's very clunky, and it can be taken away at a moments notice, without any compensation forthcoming.

But I do have to say, that the iPad would be the best to go with. If you can, wait, save more for it, and then buy it. There's a rumor that the iPad2 will come out this Spring. Perhaps this will cause iPads to drop in price.

However, I will say that I did upgrade and get the iPad with 3G. Yes, I use my wireless at home, but if I am out or travelling (like sitting by the pool at Disney, LOL! ;) then I want to be able to have Internet "on demand." However, I am still tryign to figure out in my phone (LG EnV touch) can be made into a hotspot.

I know my Droid X can so I looked into it, it is $9.99/month to do that so I said forget it. It isn't worth the fee.

I'm pretty sure the Touch is only wireless for IF you are someplace that has internet. A smart phone will connect you anywhere. Maybe you knew that but I'm just saying that if you are buying something, why not get the smartphone and have access anywhere?

A friend of mine does this with hers, at no extra charge. I should add, I don't know what phone she has.

She uses her phone as a hot spot for her computer with no extra fees :confused3. I can use my phone anywhere-using the internet on my phone but not using it as a modem for other devices without a fee.

I can use my original Moto droid as a hotspot without a fee. I use an app called Pdanet. I have to tether my droid to laptop with a usb cable....it's not wireless...but it works very well.

Cool, thanks. Did you use the free version or did you pay for the 'full' one? I probably won't use it much but when I do need it, it will be nice to have.
