I currently have a Zune HD (love it), but the apps and games are almost nonexistent. I have a very small music collection, and use it mostly to watch movies. I'm asking Santa for a 32gb ipod touch (will still use Zune). Seems like the only Black Friday deal on the new 32gb touch is at TRU, where it's 300 with a free 50 gift card. I think I could get 10% TRU reward dollars as well, but not sure since I just joined. I don't shop at TRU enough to be overly excited about a free gift card/rewards from there. Better than getting no deal, of course (could get video games ;)). My other option is to buy the older model, a 3rd gen 32gb, for about 230. Both would be plus tax (NY). Is the new model worth the 70+ more it would cost? I think the new features are a camera, video chatting, special gaming, and a sharper picture. DH said he doesn't have a problem telling Santa about either one, but his one condition is that if I go with the newer one, I have to use the TRU GC and rewards on myself (he knows I would spend it on the kids). I think I'd rather save the 70+ by buying the older model. Any thoughts?

I have the 1st generation 32gb. Got it when it first came out and spent $$$ on it. I am hoping to get the latest 4th generation 32gb for Christmas. I would go with the latest model and this is why: every year they come out with a newer model and the oldest model seems to be left behind. I cannot update the software on my 1st gen. touch, Apple does not do upgrades for that generation anymore. So that means if there's a really cool App. that's out and it doesn't run on my old software, I can't get it.

In your case I would definitely say that the newer version of the ipod will be worth the money. Why? B/c when you subtract out the value of the fifty dollar gift card (no gift cards with the third generations), the fourth generation is only costing you twenty dollars more. So ask yourself whether its worth another twenty dollars for those features. IMO, since you want it for games, movie and apps, the screen quality is a major consideration. And the difference between the two generations is like night and day. My daughter has an iphone 3GS and she is jealous of the quality of the screen on my ipod touch fourth generation.

That is a very cool DH you have.

Good point! I hadn't even thought of that (but we have one from this summer and would be getting a new version so I guess we should be ok for a bit.)

I guess we will go with the TRU deal. I really want the 32 gig and this seems to be the way to go, it seems like they'd be pushing the bigger/more expensive one with the deals but I guess they are thinking people will want to spend less up front period, which I understand as well.

What are some advantages to the 32g instead of the 8g? I don't know that much about ipods but my DS14 wants one & asked for a 32g.

I would go with one of the refurbished ones on the Apple website. They offer a full one year warranty on them and the 8 GB ones are $149 with free shipping. I have an 8 GB iPhone with movies, tons of apps, and music on it and still haven't filled it halfway.

4x the storage space. For a teen, I would for sure get the 32GB. My dd's best friend bought an 8g, she filled it up in a couple of months, and sold it to buy a 32g. My dd is actually going from a 32 to a 64 this Christmas.

And to the OP, if you are using it to watch movies, I would absolutely get the new generation.

My niece wants one for Channukah and she particularly wants the feature that lets you SKYPE. That is only available on the new generation 4 models, so I am stuck with buying the more expensive one. My DH Thinks that 8GB is too small also. I don't know why. :confused3

Of course my DD (who has an older itouch) now wants the new one as well because, hey-the cousin is getting one.

I have an 8gb Nano (and a 32gb touch) and I have to pick what music I want on my Nano, because it fills up. It won't hold anywhere close to all my music.
And that is with no videos on it at all.

You can get the skype on the earlier-version touch (not the earliest, though), you just can't "facetime" video call. I'm not sure skype even supports the facetime camera on the 4th gen yet.

Which one, do you know? The gen 2 are $149 as opposed to $225 for gen 4.
