We looked in to having the battery replaced on my second gen Ipod touch before Christmas because I handed it down to my son when I got a new one. When you sync the Ipod, there is an option to recieve push notifications or instant updates, you do not want to do this to preserve battery life. I also uninstalled apps that I knew were doing this, like Facebook. To make extra sure it wasn't happening, I turned off Wifi. It helped a ton, but the battery life still isn't good as new (but fine for my ten year old!). My husband talked to the the people at the Apple store about the battery replacement, and when you mail it in, they simply give you a refurbished Ipod. The guys at the store said that replacing the battery in a touch is nothing like the other models, and it really cannot be done without trashing the Ipod. I'm not sure how they go about it if you have an engraved machine that you want back, but for the most part they just swap out the Ipod when you send it in for battery replacement. Hope that helps, just my experience.
