Anyone know if they every have IPods on sale for Black Friday? or ever?

I think I want to get one for my DS (12) for Christmas. Any suggestions on which model?

TIA!

The model depends on what capabilities you want. Video & music or just music. I bought my dd a Nano (in black - she was VERY specific on what color she wanted) and I wasted $$ on buying the 4g model because she will never fill it up. Literally, while the Nano I ordered was being shipped to me, Apple released the video IPOD.

Be sure to look for discounts, like an education discount if you buy direct through Apple. Also, find out what color (usually black or white) your son prefers.

Buy a skin to protect the IPOD and include it as a part of the gift. DD opened her Nano gift first and then the skin and the nano went right into the skin and hasn't been out since. The skin I bought is made of clear polycarbonate and has a window for the dial on the front and access openings everywhere needed.

By the way, I did shell out the extra bucks for the extended warranty - I think it was about $70 for 2 years. We haven't needed yet - but, from what I've read - if you don't have it and something happens to your gadget - you may as well throw it in the garbage.

PS...I also got DD's name engraved on the back of the Nano for free. It's small print and looks nice.

Last year on Thanksgiving DAY - Meijer had a deal - buy the Ipod Shuffle ($100 then-I think they are less now) and get a $50 gift card rebate. My DH was there at about 4:30am to get one for our DD10. :teeth: The rebate had to be mailed off within 2 weeks and it took about 10 weeks to get it, but it finally did come!

DD now 11 loves her shuffle....it is the smallest one (in size and memory) so I think it only holds about 125 songs, but that is fine for her.

Good luck and happy shopping!! I am anxious to see all those Black Friday deals!! :wave2:

Thanks! I am a total newbie about the IPods. I didn't even know about the skin - a protective cover I'm guessing. I think the music will be enough, don't think I want my DS downloading video.

i have been looking at Ipods as I want one. I went on apple.com and pick everything I wanted. It was the pink 4gb with warrenity and a nike arm holder. I think it came to be about $250. i wanted the black one but it is 8gb and I think $250 just for the ipod not including the rest. I printed it out and gave it to my mom and told her that this was my christmas list.!!!

I have an ipod, love it, so don't get me wrong...

But you can get a different brand for less money, depending on how responsible your 12 year old is. My 10 year old was begging for an ipod, but I explained they are just too expensive. So, for Christmas he's getting a 4 gig Scandisk mp3 player for around $100. He will come no where near filling it up, and if he wants to upgrade to an ipod after showing he can be responsible for it, I'll consider it in a few years. My 7 year old already has an mp3 player, and it's a Memorex.. he calls it an ipod. He doesn't care that it's not a "real" ipod.

Apple fiercely protects their prices so retailers aren't really allowed to discount (very minimal discounts) without risking their deal with Apple. You won't see an ipod as a doorbuster - the closest is if a place bundles it. They may offer a gift card or accessories for free.

You can find other brands severely discounted around the holidays. But the only time you find significant discounts on ipods is if it's an older model, or a refurbished.

I agree with Plantlady. DH and I have Ipods and really like them.

However, I opted to get a Sandisk Sansa for my son's Christmas present because of the price. I got a 512 M Sansa for $42. My son is only 5, but loves music. I figured that at $40, I wouldn't be devastated if the mp3 broke, or got lost or stolen.

We have bought an Ipod for my DD for Christmas. I found out, through the Budget board here, that they have refurbished models at apple.com. It was half the price of the new one. I got it last week, and she won't even know it's a refurb! It's perfect for her and our budget!

My DD13 has asked for the Blue Nano for Christmas, but any color will do! I debated on ordering it from the apple web site or buying it from Costco. Costco is cheaper by $10 but the apple web site will engrave it for free. Also, Costco hasn't gotton the blue one in yet. Well, this past week my friends son's Nano went black on him and they took it to Costco (had purchased it 5 months prior from there) and walked out with a new one! Guess where I will be buying our Nano's from???? :thumbsup2

For everybody considering buying an IPOD - be sure to CALL Apple before ordering to see if you qualify for a discount. I didn't do this and found out after the fact they have a military discount (for military retirees, too;). I was also told that they will give an educational discount for any student.

We bought our 30gb ipods at costco a couple of months ago for $289, we saved $10 from what it was at the apple store................costco stands behind ALL their products, they will replace it free or give you a replacement for like 7 years.............my dh already exchanged his when he had a chip in the ipod's screen shortly after he opened it.............

also GET I-SKIN to protect your ipod--we spent $35 at the ipod store for this, for each of our ipod's but it is worth every penny! It's nice to be able to "shove" my ipod in my diaper bag and know it is protected...............

I LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE my video ipod! It is a great product for me as a mom, I have my dd's favorite songs on separate playlists, so it's a quick click to calm her down!

And I also have an external speaker, to plug in if she is fussy while we are out, and she can watch Mickey Mouse Clubhouse!

It's truly been a lifesaver! ANd a lot of fun too!

Call: 1-800-MY-APPLE to find out if you are qualified for the discount.

It basically applies to active duty, guard, and military retirees and is "up to 17% discount on certain items and free shipping for purchases over $50.

OK, I am a total newbie with the Ipod video. Where do you download the videos, and does it take forever? We've had an mp3 player for a few years, but haven't done anything with videos.

You download the videos from iTunes (or any site with video available in mpeg4 format) It doesn't take too long if you have a fast connection, depending on length - a music video is a lot quicker than a full length film obviously. You can even sign up for free video podcasts (the DIS has a great one!)

I too love my video and can't imagine being without it. At work I have a lot of down time, so I'll sit and watch TV shows and videos. On the flight to Orlando a couple weeks ago I watched 4 episodes of Scrubs, and on the flight back I watched last year's season finale of LOST (catching up for the season premiere that night, haha) It's SO convenient. I'm so spoiled by it.

You can also put home movies on the ipod video. You just have to convert them via Quicktime (simple click of a button).
