IPod Protection Plan?

We just purchased an IPod Nano and wanted to know whether it is worth it to purchase the 2-year protection plan through Apple. They said it would cover the battery as well, but wouldn't the battery last for over two years? Has anyone taken advantage of their protection plan? What are your opinions about purchasing the plan?

On average, such plans don't make financial sense. You'll utilize such protection so infrequently that you would be better off, financially, paying for service and/or repairs out-of-pocket when and if they occur, rather than buying this type of insurance. Rather, this kind of protection is valuable only when looked at from a non-financial perspective. Many people would be very frustrated about having to pay out-of-pocket for a (relatively) new item, and so the protection plan shields them from that frustration and disappointment, and is worth it from that standpoint, even if it doesn't actually save money on average.

i've used apples my whole life, i've had an ipod since the second year they came out (my sister has a first generation). i've never bought any kind of service plan on an ipod. the only thing i'd spend that money on would be on my actual computer from them, in case anything ever happens. it's really not worth spending money on the ipod, since really, in like 2 years they'll be obsolete anyway (i can't even find cases for my 2nd gen and i only bought it 4 years ago!).

We bought the protection plan for our daughters iPod and I was glad we did. Her iPod has been sent back 3 times now and it even covers the ear pods. However, we bought it AFTER we had had hers for a month and it was nothing but trouble. I think she just got one of the "bad" ones. I honestly think if you are going to have trouble with it, you will have trouble with it from the beginning or not at all. Her's was a problem by day 3. Give the purchase a week or two and then decide on it.

For most electronics items once they get past the first 90 days will live a long and healthy life (unless abused). The warranty should cover at least that, and probably the first year.

Think about other insurance you have, such as your car. You probably have at least a $500 deductible for collision. Compare the price of an ipod from two years ago to now; prices will continue to go down. Look at the price you would have to pay for the service contract . More than likely if you have to replace it before the service contract is over you will pay an amount that is no more than 50% of the service contract cost and you will have a brand new item with more features.

An extended warranty makes sens only for large, expensive to repair or replace items (such as a plasma TV).
