iPhone vs. Droid

I am eligible for a new phone in January. I am an Apple lover but I am thinking of staying with a Droid. I have an iPad (using it right now) WiFi only, but adequate for my needs. I kind of like having both platforms available. And the new Droid Bionic looks cool.

Opinions?

I had a droid and got an iphone in August. There is no comparison. The iphone (in my opinion) is superior. DS has had to replace his droid at least 4 times. He now has my old one and is eligible for the iphone in April. The apps work much better on the iphone and it seems to be faster. Just my 2 cents.

This isn't a flat A-to-B comparison, because while there is basically one iPhone (with a few new revs), "Droid" doesn't describe on particular phone... there are dozens of them. Some of not that great, others are much better.

I'd recommend actually playing with a few at the Wireless store of your choice. (I'm assuming VZW?)

It's impossible to make blanket statements comparing the two, though, that are going to be terribly accurate across the board.

I am on my second Droid. I had the original for about 2 years. I really liked that phone, but it was getting old and slow.
I was eligible for an upgrade the same week the Bionic came out- that's what I have now.
Night and day difference. :thumbsup2

My DH got his first iPhone 1 week before I got the Bionic- so we have been doing a lot of comparing. He previously had a regular old cell phone. This is his first leap to smartphone-land! (and he is chugging the Apple kool-aid. The iPhone just completed his conversion. ;))

He envies my screen size! It is significantly larger than the iPhone, but not so large that it doesn't still fit easily in my purse or back pocket of my jeans.

He likes that the iPhone syncs with iTunes. But I think that's a drawback. He cannot put anything on his phone that does not come through iTunes.

It seems like some of the apps I have for free- cost a little on iTunes.

I love my Droid Bionic. I was looking at other droids as I was preparing for the upgrade. The X2 was pretty good, but I really didn't like the HTC phones or Samsung. And from reading the Android forums online- I think a large number of people with those phones have more issues with their phones.
I think Motorola makes a nice phone. And now that Google runs Motorola's cell phone division- all the better since I use Google calendar and contacts and email. (although you can do that on the iPhone too I think)

Bionic has 4G. It is VERY fast. No iPhone has that yet- I know the 5 will, but it's not out right now.

One more difference. The iPhone does not have a removable battery. This is a topic of debate in my house. I prefer being able to carry a charged back-up battery with me to swap out if necessary- like in WDW for long park days or other places where I might not have easy access to a charger. DH thinks it's nice not having to carry "accessories."

Lastly (and not meant as an insult) the guy in the Verizon store told me that the iPhone is great for people who have never had a Smartphone before. But the Droid is for those who are used to Smartphones and know what to do with them. Droid has much more to offer. But the iPhone is a great "all inclusive" package.

So- hopefully those are a few things you can consider as you make your decision. Let us know what you choose!

If you're with Verizon, I would stay with the Droid for the sole reason of LTE. The new 4G phones are SCREAMING fast and for that I will trade an iPhone for an Android handset. That said, I love my iPhone and will never give it up, but I have the luxury of carrying 2 devices (work and personal - one iPhone, one Samsung Infuse).

I am leaning towards the Bionic. I kind of like having both operating systems.

And I hope I can keep all the apps I already have.

My only real advice is to not get the samsung fascinate, they have bad reception issues (I'm on my third with no improvement in reception going to ask for a droid x here soon).

Droid's I think have a better layout, more buttons and MUCH more friendly to a multitasking personality. And if you're a technowizard the droid's operating system lets you do anything you'd like given that you know how.

I have a Motorola Droid (yep, "slow" original) that I really like. I confess to being an "open" software geek I like being able to control the hardware I buy. I like the standard cable for charging and data transfer. I like the microSD card for extra storage. I have many options for software and media content not controlled by either my carrier or phone manufacturer.

That said, many of my friends have iPhones. When you build both the hardware and software AND tightly control what gets on the phone, it tends to operate more smoothly and reliably. (My Droid took a lot of fiddling to get it just right.)

Take this for what it's worth, but I just found this on Perez Hilton's site...

Steve Jobs Final Project Is Not The iPhone 4s

THE IPHONE 5!!!!!!

"We are thrilled to announce that the world will be graced with one more wonderful product designed by Steve Jobs, and that is the NEXT iPhone!

Here's what Rodman & Renshaw analyst Ashok Kumar had to say about it:

"[The iPhone 5] was the last project that Steve Jobs was intimately involved with from concept to final design. For that reason…this product will establish the high water mark for iPhone volumes."

And here's what another source had to say about Steve's involvement with the next iPhone:

"[The iPhone 5 is a] complete redesign. This is a very large project that Steve dedicated all of his time to. He was not that involved in the 4S because his time was limited."

How exciting! We can't wait to check out the final piece of technology designed by Steve himself!

…Anyone out there beginning to second guess their iPhone 4S purchases? "

It was super easy to get all the apps I previously had. (the ones I still wanted, anyway! ;))
If they are paid apps- your phone will know you have already paid.

And if you use Google contacts or calendar- that is seamless as well. :thumbsup2
