iPhone or Droid?

Just going to toss this out there, too...Verizon's "4G" network isn't truly 4G. My Dad is an expert in the telecom industry and we just has this conversation over the holidays. He gave me the technical rundown, but in my head, that's pretty much like Charlie Brown's teacher...wah-wah-wha-wha...it did turn into a conversation about ethics and false advertising, however.

I'm still evaluating my relationship with my Droid and will hold off to see what iPhone users on Verizon have to say about it.

Verizon iphone will not have world wide service available. Thats a problem for me... I was so pumped to finally get an iphone, but I need world wide service.....oh well. I love my blackberry, I just thought it would be fun to have everything on one device.

Did you like how ATT recently re-branded their 3G as 4G? The problem with 4G is that the standards are just way too loose.

I've had an iPhone for a little over a year now and I still love mine. I wouldn't trade it for an Android.

I LOVE my Droid X. There's no way I'd trade it for an iPhone. I have an iPod touch, and while I like it for music and a few apps, there's no comparison when it comes to easy customizability and overall experience. I suggest spending some time trying each one out in a store, thinking about how you'd actually use the phone.

My college age daughter had the same dilemma recently. The ATT rep we had asked her about her music. She actually has like 7,000 songs on her ipod.

He told us that each one of the songs would have to be individually converted to a MP3 before loading to a droid.

We ended up buying an iphone 4 for her and me. It actually works out better since my sister, my brother who lives in NYC, and now my mom all have the same phone. We can face talk and it is cool.

Good luck with your decision. I find the I4 easy to use and I am not very good at these things.

Actually, that's not true. My DroidX plays music that was originally on my iPod, as well as .wma, .mp3, .ogg, and a host of other endings I've never heard of, lol. It's all about the app you use. Perhaps he meant that with the default apps that Droid comes with you would have to convert. Though, even if you didn't want to put a new app on and you wanted to convert, there are plenty of ways to do that....I have done it quite often when I wanted to burn music from my ipod onto a CD to give to someone. You set it up, walk away and come back in a little while and it's all converted.

I chose a DroidX because the iphone has had so many glitches. Yes, they fix them, but so far my DroidX hasn't had ANY glitches and I've had it about 8 months now. The iphone had several DAYS that people couldn't use it. That would be soooo unacceptable to me, yet ATT basically said "oh sorry, we're working on the problem".

Originally people were going for the iphone because there were more apps available for it, but the Droid market is rapidly taking over the marketshare. And, Droid doesn't seem to allow viruses the way iphone does....at least I haven't had any friends with Droids complain, but plenty with iphones.

I only liked the feel of the Droid in my hand better...and believe me you will have it in your hands for a LOT of time each day, so it's best to have one that is comfortable. The iphone seemed precarious in my hand and dropping it can be death....the Droid seemed to balance better and not feel like it was going to fall.

I'm in the same boat as the OP. My ATT contract is almost up, and I thought I would switch to Verizon and get the iphone4. However, after checking out the DroidX, I'm considering switching to that.

However, what is the difference between the DroidX and the HTC Incredible? The DroidX costs about $199 and the HTC Incredible is free! They look very similar.

With the DroidX, can you be on the internet and get an incoming call without it going to voicemail? Is it true that the iphone4 will go straight to voicemail if you are on the internet? On the ATT iphone, I can be on the internet and take an incoming call. That would be a deal breaker for me as I wouldn't want to miss a call if I was reading facebook or other news apps, or on youtube, etc.

In my 2 years of having an iphone, I've never needed to be on the internet and on a phone call at the same time, so I'm surprised to see people make such a big deal out of it. I guess I never knew I could do it, so I didn't miss it

The DroidX looked pretty cool actually, and I can watch flash video on the internet. With Apple, you can't watch flash video (on the iphone, ipad, etc.) at all.

So, I guess my main question is, how do the DroidX and HTC Incredible differ?

For me, the Droid X was too big to carry and use as a phone. I guess it depends on what you use it for.

Just want to point out to everyone that Droid <> Android.

Android is the operating system used by multiple phones, such as the Droid.

The Droid is just a particular phone that happens to run on the Android operation system.

This is common mistake I have seen the non-IT oriented person make.

The virus deal is on phones that are jailbroken, from what i've been told. An iPhone that's not jailbroken shouldn't have any problems with that. Download your aps from iTunes and you should be good.
We have 2 iPhones in our house and have never experienced the DAYS of not being able to use them, or even hours. I've never had any of my friends with them complain of that either. It's definitely not the 'norm' for them.
Any phone screen has the potential for breaking when dropped. I've dropped my iPhone a LOT but I also keep it in some sort of case. My husband on the other hand has a cracked screen because his was not in a case and he dropped it in a parking lot. My daughter dropped her LG Neon and the screen completed busted into pieces.

Good question, and I've been debating the same thing myself. I already have a Motorola Droid, which I like very well. I'm not so sure that the iPhone is an improvement over what I already have.

One thing I've noticed...a lot of apps that are free with the Android platform are sometimes pay apps in the iTunes store.

Personally, I would wait a bit and see the new android phones running on 4G on Verizon. Samsung, HTC, Motorola and LG are coming out with with them. I've seen the 4G speed on laptops and it just flies! The phones should be out by end of the 1st quarter.

As far as the iPhone on 4G, from what I've read, Apple would have had to redesign the casing to hold a larger battery and they were not willing to do that yet.

I'm using a Samsung Fascinate right now and I just love it. The screen is so clear and beautiful. And all the free apps .... wow! Of all the Verizon android phones out right now, it and the Moto X are the top of the line.

Someone mention music on an android phone.. I have 1300 songs on mine and my daughter has about 1600 on her HTC Incredible. It was no problem moving them over from computer to phone with the sd card. And unlike an iPhone, I can put a larger sd card in the phone to double the memory.

Some interesting replies on this thread...

1) Droid neither referes to all android phones or just one model of phone. There are 3-4 high end android phones that are allowed to use the marketing term 'Droid'. Since it's just a marketing term and doesn't describe functionality there is no harm in using it for all android phones.

2) You do not have convert itunes one by one.... i'd be a little irritated if a rep told me such a blantant lie.

3) While verizon is using LTE for its 4G AT&T will be also so that's a wash.

4) Apples Jobs currently has no plans to increase the size of the iphone screen. At 3.7 it seem tiny to my 3.9 and I drool over my wifes Droid Xs 4.3 screen. I personally will never get a phone that is no at least 4.1

5) Andriod phone manufactures are completing against each other. Android will have all the new and improved features first... The iphone is expected to continue it's every 2 year major upgrade plans.

It really comes down to personal preference and what you will be using the phone for.

I have had my DroidX for a few weeks now. I love it!

I am still trying to find my way around all the things that it can do. My Verizon store offers a free Smartphone class twice a month.

All the time! On the phone with the speaker on, surfing the web to find information, even plugging an address into googlemaps to give directions from where the caller is to where I am, lol. And you can have multiple Internet windows....meaning if I was doing something when the call came in, I don't lose my place to look up something or give directions. I've also been on a call while my GPS plays in the background, keeping me on track but not interupting the friend who is calling me. And you can have other apps open as well. Of course, as with your home computer, the more things you're trying to do the slower it may go....though most of the time I've done a lot of multi-tasking without noticing any drop, occasionally it will be slow....though honestly, this is usually more due to whereever I'm at more than because I'm taxing my DroidX.

I have read here that the iPhone from Verizon somehow doesn't have the feature of being able to do a call and the Internet....that would be a total deal stopper for me! However, I know friends who have ATT iPhones who are able to multi-task, so either the information is not accurate or for some reason the Verizon iPhone is inferior to the ATT one. I'd definitely check that before you get a Verizon iPhone. Because while you may think you have no need for it NOW.....I have to say I resisted going from my simple flip phone to a smartphone because I just didn't think I would have much use for having the Internet on my phone and all the other things it can do. My husband still ribs me about it, lol. Using my grocery list app has saved so many "oh I forgot to tell you we needed that"....and cut my grocery shopping down to one day a week because we have everything on the same list from all family members! And yes, I can be using my grocery list and talking to a friend at the same time. It's simply a web based program that I access with a shortcut on my home page, and it's on my, DH, DD computers at home and work also.

There are SOOO many uses for this phone that you don't even realize until you suddenly have it at your fingertips. I was at the store this weekend trying to buy beading wire for my daughter...the description was on the list, but I couldn't find the exact stuff she wanted. So I called her and when trying to talk about it didn't quite help, I snapped a photo of the three choices, emailed it to her, and she could look them over and decide. I have an app where I can snap a photo of the UPC code of any item and it will look up the price at multiple online and LOCAL sources and come back and tell me the lowest prices it found.....makes price matching more fun, lol.

I can read the Disboards RSS feed (or the actual website if I want) while I sit and wait at the doctor's, or in line at the store, or walking from the car to the house even, lol. At Disney I've been known to sit on a bench while the girls go on a ride I don't want to do, and read DISboards...or any of the other dozens of forums I frequent.

Of, course, it has a downside....I used to be able to say I didn't answer your email because I was away from home all day....harder to do when folks know that you have email access on your phone, lol.

I reccomend going to a store that sells both, like Best Buy. We spent time there yesterday upgrading my 14 yr old's phone to a Droid Incredible (we have Verizon). Best Buy sells phones for AT&T, Verizon and Sprint. My other son and I are due for upgrades in mid-February and I asked the geeky guys there a ton of questions. I mean geeky in a good way. They were way helpful and hands down, they all think that the android phones are better than the iphones. They gave me tons of reasons why. Plus, they told me that some amazing android phones are coming out in the next few months.

My husband has a Droid and loves it. My son really, really loves the Droid Incredible he got yesterday. My 12 yr old son that has the ENV Touch is so jealous. The thing that appealed to me about the iphone is that I can have my music on it at the gym and only have 1 device with me.

DH and I spent so much time in Best Buy that we ended up buying an ipad to replace our laptop that has some funky virus. I have to say that I really love the ipad and had never considered getting one. I really thought we would just get a new laptop. However, the ipad had the reader, no worries about viruses, no antivirus software needed, and is just so user friendly. Once we looked at them, our decision was made. Also, because my kids have the ipod touch, when I registered my ipad, every app they have ever bought that was compatible came on it from our itunes account. The same thing would happen with an iphone. While I don't really play games the way they do, it is nice.

I'm just not sure what to do!

It's called Barcode Scanner. Now I live in a major metropolitan area, so the local search may be contingent on where you live....but I just scanned a book I have sitting on my desk and it told me the price at Amazon, bn.com, borders.com, alibris (used!!), and another page of online book stores, but it also told me which local BN and Borders have it in stock, as well as a small bookstore a few blocks from me and the prices for each. So I can weigh the savings of going all the way to Borders which is about two dollars cheaper, but I'd spend time and gas getting there, or spend the $2 more and get it closer. I love it when I'm at the store and am able to research whether it's a good price or not. I've found that the Target and Walmart in town can vary by several dollars on an item...and since I shop both rather regularly, I can just send the list that the app generated to my grocery list app (which is RememberTheMilk.com) and therefore remember to pick it up at the other store next time I'm there, no extra gas required.

Just quoting the part i wanted to comment on. the verizon iphone won't be able to take a call and be on the internet at the same time due to Verizon's CDMA technology. At&T is on a different type of network.

Then definitely I'd recommend the DroidX on Verizon because I CAN multitask using mine!

That's interesting about the iPhone being on a two-year plan, because I just read an article informing people that were interested in getting the Verizon iPhone, to potentially wait, since it was likely that the iPhone 5 would be out this summer.
