iPhone News...

The credit check does not usually happen but at&t reserves the right to check it.

Do you work for them? Just curious because you sounded like you did with your answer. If you do, I certainly have a few questions to pick your brain with.

So i don't need to worry about it?:goodvibes I was thinking of calling or gonig by a store today to see if i can get pre-approved... I'm not going to pay an extra $700 just to get phone service for the iPhone. I heard they did do a credit approval for the original iphone, that's what I was worried about

So, should I expect a line like with the original sale or can I just walk in on July 11th and pick up my phone at the AT&T store?

After reading that article I'm glad I'm already an existing IPhone customer, because I'd take a monetary hit and minutes hit if I had to sign up now under the new guidelines.

Here's a link to an AT&T video on the process for new customers. It says that they will do a credit check.

I saw that they do a credit check and am not sure if I will need one. I will not be a new customer, but will be switching from my parents family plan to my own plan. Im not sure if that would be considered new. Does anyone know how much they charge for deposits? Id like to know just in case.

well this sucks. so if i'm already a customer i have to put out $399 for the phone? This is why I wanted to wait to sign-up but FIL was anxious to get out of T-mobile as soon as the contract expired. I knew I should have just went with my own plan instead of staying on the family... jeeze.

what about this? you can buy the phone out right and not have a contract or no other fees?

I wonder how much it would be just to get my phone out of the family plan and just get a phone on my own? I can leave my wife on their plan and just do a basic plan. I mean if I have to put out $399, I might as well just go for the extra $200 and get it sans-contract.

This just really rots.

Just read this

And the paragraphs here interested me:

A year ago, Apple thought it could buck the U.S. industry trend of charging customers little for an expensive phone, and then making up for it later with service charges and add-ons.

In Europe and Asia, customers are used to paying hundreds of dollars for a high-end phone, with the tradeoff that their monthly fees aren't as quite high as they are in America.

The way i see it thats just not right - for example us europeans paying for these high end phones just isnt true - we have always, on most contracts got even the newest phones for free, and even our contract's seem better than your ones

EG i plan to get this 3g iphone next week, and will be getting the iphone for free, then paying the equivilant of $90 per month for 1000 minutes, 500 sms and unlimited data. It's also only an 18 month contract rather than 24 like yours.

Have your mobile (cell) phone companies been ripping you off?

Just a small note, our infrastructure is HUGE! They have a lot of sq. miles to cover.

I was thinking the same thing. Plus while the UK may offer you free phones, I'd bet not all countries in Europe do. I can't speak for all carriers, but AT&T will give many of their phones for free or nearly free, but the Iphone is not currently contracted for that offer.

everybody realizes, there's only a week to go?

My stupid MP3 player has been going nuts lately, I really could use a new one. That's right... iPhones act like iPods too. Even more justification!

I just went into my local AT&T store to pre-qualify for the service and wa stold that they are not doing that yet. When online the guides are telling you to do that now.

Ughh frustrating.

Last wednesday I went in and got a credit check through them and it was fine. It lasts for 90 days at any att store. I didnt specifically mention that I was interested in the iphone, but I really dont think that matters.

Strange, I went in this past Wed and pre-qualified... the strangest part of that was I had gone in the previous Friday and was told that they weren't going to be doing that and to top it off, they had told me that they couldn't "Hold" credit approvals more then a week, but when I went in this week and prequalified I was told it would be good for a month.:confused3 I was told that when I go in on Friday I just let them know that I prequalified and they can pull up my info.
The manager was also trying REALLY hard to get me to add my DH onto the plan as a family plan.. it would mean $300 in fees from sprint (ETF) but now we're thinking about it b/c DH would get a 15% discount with AT&T and manager offered to waive the activation fees:)

I plan on getting an IPhone to use as a toy as we are issued phones for work.

Just wondering, my inlaws have a family plan with ATT and stated that we could do an add a line on their plan if it would be cheaper then gettting a stand a lone plan just for an Iphone.

Can anyone give me insight on this?

ATT keeps telling me that I need to go to a store to find out.

Unless AT&T changed their guidelines, the only thing that will happen is THEIR phones will cost less, but the Iphone charges will remain the same no matter what plan it is included on.

i believe it would be cheaper to add a line because then you only pay $10 for voice instead of the base 40. You would then add the data plan that is $30 so the total is $40 instead of 70. The deal is that your sharing the 450 minutes with the whole family plan instead of just 1 phone. But if you mainly talk to people on att then mobile to mobile has you covered. My family hardly uses any of our minutes because we mostly talk to each other.

o2 in the uk put up their ordering site this morning, and it has since crashed!!

You'd have thought they'd be better prepared

:goodvibes

Yes. The Family plan would be cheaper overall. With our plan we have 5 phones (the max). DW and I pay $30 total into the plan for both our phones. That's 700 minutes of Roll Over time (even with 5 phones, we roll over 2-300 minutes per month), and unlimited SMS. So adding the data for 1 iPhone would bring my bill to $60 total. It is a good idea.

BUT!!!! You'll probably, like I'm going to have to, pay $399 for your phone, since it's an existing contract.

Over the course of 2 years, you are looking at $1680 for the $70 plan vs. $960 by joining the FP if you only have to contribute $40 a month.
