i don't understand AT&T. why do they make the iphone cheaper for new customers than loyal customers. i just went to the apple website to see the price if i were to preorder the phone. because i bought the 3g iphone on release day last year, i'm eligible for upgrading my phone for $499 (32GB). the iphone only costs $299 for everyone else. i don't get it.
Also, apparently i must be getting a deal at $499 because here's what it says on the apple website
Requires new two-year AT&T wireless service contract, sold separately to qualified customers; credit check required; must be 18 or older. For non-qualified customers, including existing AT&T customers who want to upgrade from another phone or replace an iPhone 3G, the price with a new two-year agreement is $499 (8GB), $599 (16GB), or $699 (32GB).
Will the store be reopened by then???? Still not happy I had to drive to Norfolk this Saturday to get my Mac fixed, and I have to go back to pick it up...Grrrrr
There is something like an 18-month or 2-year window before you become eligible for "upgrade pricing" with AT&T, after you've upgraded phones previously. For example, I just became eligible for the cheaper pricing with AT&T in May (I've been an AT&T wireless customer about 6 years now), because I got myself a new Nokia phone about 18 months ago. That 18-month window expired in May, and now I'm eligible for the "upgrade pricing". You might call your local AT&T store to confirm, but I suspect this is what is going on with you now.
As for me, I'm going to the AT&T store after 5 PM today (not allowed to do it before, according to local rep on the phone a minute ago), and pre-ordering my 16GB black iPhone 3GS!![]()

You can also pre-order them on-line. I did mine today. I just got the regular shipping. Not that much in a hurry. I still have the 1st gen version so I'm just happy to have something faster

Just pre-ordered mine on-line last night as well. But man, oh man, the Apple website was not prepared for the rush. I wasn't able to get through the pre-order process without erroring out until about 9:30 PM.
