iPhone 4

For those of you that are lucky enough to have the new phone.......did you get a bumper? If so, what do you think of it?

Another question.........opinion on AppleCare???? I did not do it with my 3G, but I'm kinda thinking I may want to add it this time. Thoughts?? Prior Experiences??

Interesting you ask about AppleCare. In a Computerworld story just posted:

More than a quarter of iPhones break within 2 years
iPhone 3GS more reliable than 3G, but iPhone 4's glass back concerns warranty firm

More than one in four Apple iPhones break or fail within two years, a company that provides after-sale warranties said today.

SquareTrade Inc., which sells extended warranties for iPhones, said that 26% of Apple's smartphones suffer breakdowns -- or simply breakage -- within the first two years. But that's an improvement over the iPhone's past reliability rating.

"Twenty-six percent is actually pretty good," said Vince Tseng, vice president of marketing at SquareTrade. "And it's encouraging that the failure rates have decreased."

According to SquareTrade, which examined more than 25,000 customer warranty claims, the iPhone 3GS is more reliable, and apparently sturdier, than its predecessors -- the iPhone 3G, which went on sale in July 2008, and the original iPhone, which debuted in 2007.

Last year, a similar SquareTrade analysis found that 31% of all iPhones failed or broke during the first 24 months of ownership. In comparison, SquareTrade's latest finding is that 25.6% of customers who have owned an iPhone during the past 22 months experienced a breakdown or breakage.

Claims filed by iPhone owners in connection with hardware failures or accidents -- SquareTrade's warranties cover both -- were lower this year compared to 2009. While 21% of iPhone-owning customers reported an accidental damage claim and 10% filed a hardware failure claim in the 24 months preceding last summer, only 18.1% and 7.5% filed accident or hardware-related claims, respectively, in the 22 months prior to June 2010.

Of course, phones that people keep using beyond the standard two-year duration of carrier contracts fail at a higher rate. SquareTrade's forecast: Three-year-old iPhones will experience a failure rate of 35% to 40%.

Tseng attributed the decrease in warranty claim rates primarily to improvements that Apple made in the iPhone's touchscreen when it developed the 3GS model.

"The iPhone 3GS is sturdier and can withstand a higher degree of shock," said Tseng, referring to the decline in accident claims, the bulk of which are connected to incidents in which the smartphone is dropped. "But the overall reliability of the iPhone has improved, especially in the touchscreen."

The number of reported iPhone 3GS touchscreen problems is less than half the number reported for the iPhone 3G, according to SquareTrade's data. Overall, Tseng estimated that the iPhone 3GS will have 20% fewer problems than the iPhone 3G.

On the downside, iPhone 3GS owners have reported almost 50% more power issues than users of the older iPhone 3G have reported.

The improvement in iPhone reliability will likely continue, said Tseng, and that's a good sign for the millions of people who have ordered the iPhone 4, which Apple will start selling on Thursday.

"Apple has gotten its manufacturing lines in shape, and failure rates have dropped year to year" over the past few years, said Tseng. "The iPhone 4 should be a good, solid device."

But Tseng said he has one major concern about the new iPhone: The all-glass back.

With the iPhone 4, Apple switched to a glass back, dropping the plastic cover that the iPhone 3G and 3GS had. Industry watchers have speculated that Apple went for the glass to improve voice and data reception, since its smartphone has been plagued with reception problems from the time of its 2007 launch, especially in high-density cities like New York and San Francisco.

"It all depends on how consumers treat the device, of course," said Tseng. "The front glass touchscreen has been fairly prone to cracking, but then people don't put protective covers [that shield] the front of the device."

The best way to protect any iPhone, said Tseng, is to use a cover, a case or silicon skin.

Ugghh! DH had his delivered yesterday. Delivery of mine was attempted today in the 15 minutes he was out of the house!

So we are off to the FedEx facility tonight to pick it up. Can't wait to have it in my hands!

I ordered the new phone for my DS bd which is 6/28. Ordered on Wed. the 16th and they said it wouldn't be shipped until 7/2. I thought that was fine and I would wrap up the InvisiShield for the 28th. I checked the status today just out of curiosity, and it was shipped from TX today and will be delivered tomorrow! I guess DS will figure out his BD present when he comes home tomorrow and sees a note left by Fed Ex! I ordered mine a day before I ordered his (mine from the ATT store since it's an exchange-just got it) and I haven't heard that mine is in yet. He'll probably get his before me.

Woohoo look what FedEx clause brought me.

I always get AppleCare...that is why Apple loves me!

It really is a thing of beauty.
Even tho I've had an iPhone for 2 years, I haven't put this down all night, it's that good.
Screen is so crisp, the whole thing is so fast, just a great upgrade.

Only downside is I can't get iTunes working so I have a phone devoid of almost everything! Had to take it back to my carrier to even activate it instead of just doing it at home!

:goodvibes

Ok...folks who have already received and are using the iPhone 4......

I'm reading on line that people are losing connectivity bars when they hold the phone where their hand and fingers are covering the metal strip around the edge.

This metal strip is the antennae and I'm readying that covering it makes a difference.

Anyone seeing this?

I'm curious, because that is exactly how I hold my phone.

i just accidentally dropped my 3gs into (of all things) the toilet (it was celan at the time, but the phone didn't care)

anyone looking to get rid of their old device?

There are reports of it here in the UK too, although mine is fine (so far).
May be a certain batch only?

I'm finding that if I hold it in my left hand (so that my thumb is over the volume buttons), I can see the signal strength go down. However, if I hold it in my right hand, it's fine

I have my new iPhone 4 and have made a few calls, holding the phone in my left hand, without problems so far (and my hand definitely touches the metal strip). I did read online that a "bumper" would solve the problem, if a problem exists (though for $30 that bumper is an expensive piece of plastic - plus, if it's a necessity, it should be included with the phone, I say! We'll see, I guess).

Side note: I can't believe I have an iPhone, finally! Can't wait to go home and try to figure the thing out... it's really, really cool. I'm terrified that I'll drop it, I need to find a sturdy case asap. !!

Well i been playing with my new phone for a couple hours so far and wow it is sweet. Had to figure out how to import everything from my old phone. Can we say pain. The screen is unreal. wow!!!. Looking forward to playing with it some more. :surfweb:

Kevin, I am actually able to get it to happen. It isn't just simply holding it in your left hand, you need to grip the bottom left corner. It appears that the Cellular & WiFi antennas short each other out. It isn't something I see happening normally and I plan on getting a case anyway.

Apple admits it happens and basically suggest a case or sleeve:

So far I am extremely happy, I had updated my 3Gs so I already had the improved email, camera zooming, multitasking and folders. But the speed is much faster, the camera with flash is much faster, and the retina display is incredible.

Instead of a bumper case, I went with an Invisible Shield.

On zagg.com, DH went to the lower right and registered for the IPad giveaway. They emailed him a 50% off coupon. I ordered the Invisible Shield that protects the whole phone. That should keep it unblemished until I can find a case that I love. I have a drawer with 4 different cases that I tried for my 3GS, and I don't want to repeat that again.

Excellent product with lifetime replacement guaranteed!

I have the invisible shield (full coverage) for iPhone 3G since July 2008.
I ordered the invisible shield again for iPhone 4.

My suggestion is use one of your four different cases to house your invisible shielded iPhone 4 because overtime lint will get to the corners/edges of the phone. Lint from jeans/pants' pockets and purses/bags, etc.

I have a leather case/magnetic closure with invisible shielded iPhone 3G for almost 2 years with no lint problems whereas my friends complained the lint problems.

My install in less than 5 minutes (front & back).
