Ipad vs. Ipod touch

I have been looking into getting an ipad, but now I wonder if the Itouch won't serve the same purpose. I originally was going to get the ipad to use as an ereader/laptop, but I've heard a top of reviews that the ipad isn't good for reading, so now I'm thinking the itouch might serve the purpose. For anyone who has experience with these 2 which do you think?

I got a touch early last year and loved it. I used it all the time for web browsing and e-mail, and it started to drive me nuts that it was so small. I drooled over the iPad for months and then DH surprised me with one at Christmas and I LOVE it. Seriously, favorite thing I own. Most days I don't even bother turning on our desktop anymore.

It really depends on how you're going to use it. The touch is much more portable, but that didn't bother me because I mostly use itat home. I like to sit on the couch and watch tv and check e-mail, shop, etc all at the same time on my iPad. If you'll use it more away from home, you might prefer the touch. I just love the bigger screen on the iPad.

As for reading, I know a lot of people disagree, but I have no trouble reading books on the iPad. Sometimes I have to play with the brightness a little bit, but I can always find a good setting and I have read a ton of books on it. I do not try to read outside, which can be an issue with the glare.

I also prefer my iPad. I had the first iPad and now I have the iPad 2 and I really love it. I have used it as an ereader and it is ok as long as I am not reading for too long of a time period. I wear glasses and after awhile the back light starts to strain my eyes. The touch is just too small for me to read on. So, I got a Kindle and I love reading on that. But, I can use the iPad for so many things. I have all my photos and music on it, I go online with it all the time, it's easy to carry and take with me when I need to. I love it!

If you're wanting to use it as an e-reader/laptop, definitely suggest the iPad. I don't have an iPad personally, but I do have an iPhone 4, which does essentially the same as an iTouch minus phone ability.

There is a Kindle app for the iPhone that is free, so you could buy books on Amazon. But I would NOT want to read anything on that screen for any length of time. It would really be for short "spurts" of reading, not true reading where you could be a while.

The iPad is just going to get you closer to laptop functionality than an iTouch would.

I enjoy reading outside, so I think that's my concern as far as that goes. I was interested in the ipad because I thought it would give a very portable alternative to a laptop as DH and I go on many trips a year. Although they are mostly only weekend trips, I still like having a computer with for school (mostly just to make sure I turned in my assignments or check emails) and DH needs a computer for his work if a client were to call with a question. The itouch would be nice b/c it would be much more portable, but then I think about, I always have a legal pad in my purse, so I think I could def fit an ipad lol

Yea I don't think I could do any reading on the itouch as it is so small.

I can read on my ipad2 my iPod and my Kindle and I still buy books all the time! Can't beet the convenience of the ebooks but there is nothing like sitting with an actual book in your hand, maybe that's just me!

You can get an Ipad 1 now for not much more than the top of the line ipod touch. 16gb ipad 1 with wifi is $ 350-399. Go to the Apple website. I have the first gen ipad and I love it- I dont need the camera of the ipad 2 and it's not that much faster.

I had actually thought about this, but then I thought the camera might be nie b/c my brother and his family live 23 hours away, and my brother is depolyed so we talk via skype a lot of times, and with the ipad2 it would have the camera built in and we wouldn't have to always use the lap/desk top.

Both my kids have the I Touch and I can not imagine using it as a reader. Its so small!! I know the apps on there, the kids have shown me, but just too small if what you want is reading capability. My sister has the I Pad and uses it for lots of things and has used it for the e-reader, but still prefers a real book over it. The I-pad will still put strain on your eyes too. The Kindle, Nook etc. are better if you want an e-reader.

I have both, but I prefer my IPad to my iTouch. I love my touch for music in the car but since I got the IPad, I hardly ever use my touch. Not only that but I rarely use my Nook either, love that i can use the iPad for Kindle and Nook. So many choices and so easy to read on, use the internet, play games etc....

We have both - the ipad wins hands down.

It isn't even a debate - the bigger screen, the better apps, Angry birds on a bigger screen

I have both an iPad and an itouch too. I pretty much gave the touch to dh because I just don't use it anymore.

I LOVE the book app...iBooks....on the iPad. I have a case that forms into a triangle allowing me to place it on my belly when reading in bed. I never thought I would like to read from an ereader, but I found myself trying to lick my finger to turn the page like I have to do sometimes with a real book. The way the pages look and turn is realistic and gives me the feel of having a true book more than the kindle or nook does. I also can read without bothering dh at night by keeping bedroom lights off cuz it is backlit.

The touch is just really small to read on..definitely doable but the iPad is so much better in that aspect. I also have 3G on my iPad so I can use it when wifi isn't readily available.....so another personal reason why I use it more then my touch.


With that said, if you are going to use it to read outdoors, then you may want to consider nook or kindle because the iPad is hard to see due to backlight. Also, I could not find a few books that I wanted to download on iBooks, not a biggie cuz I also put the kindle app on the iPad too, but the format is just not as cool as iBooks.

I bought an ipod touch about a month ago. I like it, but it is small, too small to really do what I want to do (read emails, read books, and even playing games is TINY!)

I am getting an ipad soon.

Now, I rarely see the ipod touch as it is, my kids clamor for it every chance they get, so getting my ipad will be helpful for ME!

I love my iPad I've have it for almost a year now and it was one of the best purchases I ever made! I read magazines, newspapers as well as books with mine and of course I use Disney apps as well! I thought about an iPod touch when my classic iPod died on me but it just did not make any sense to get a smaller version of an iPad

Thanks again everyone. So I think I definelty want and Ipad if I had to chose between the two, but now I have another question. For those of you who have the 3G is it really worth it? Most places we go have WIFI, but it is limited time use, but we find we rarely if at all use that, but at the same time I think it would be nice to have the availablity to have it if we wanted it. Say while driving to whereever we are going (we always drive to disney and it's 14 hours of just driving), or have internet while at disney to get any last minute news.

For those of you who have 3G do you use it often, and those of you who don't, do you miss it?

We don't have it and we don't miss it. My DD bought her own ipad and went for the base model so we never even considered the 3G. But truthfully - my DH has a droid and I have an blackberry so we could always get on the internet if we really needed to.

Most of the apps are downloaded and then you can use them wherever. So you could still read and play games in the car.

I didn't do 3g, wifi only. I didn't want an extra expense and as DVCBelle said, I have my droid if I need to download or look at anything else outside of wifi access. However the ability to do everything else is so worth it. I have even started buying all my movies with a free digital download so that I can pick and choose which movies I want to take with me on my iPad.

We don't have smartphones. All our phones do is make calls and text, I guess that's why I thought the 3G availability would be nice, and you only have to pay for it as you need it, is that right?
