Ipad vs. Ipod touch

I just bought the IPad 2 with the 3G. I also do not have a smartphone and have no intention of getting one. I tell my kids that I'm old and need a bigger screen to see things (that's why the IPad 2) :rotfl:

I probably will not use it more than 3 to 4 times a year but it is going to be very nice to be sitting by the pool at Boardwalk Inn with my IPad serfing the web!!

If you can affort an extra $100, go for it. The data plan is pay as you go and not contract so it makes it very affordable.

You will LOVE the IPad. Good luck.

I was at the mall this weekend and the verizon store had the ipad 1 original on sale for $299 for the 16 $399 for the 32 and $499 for the 64 they were wifi only but what a great price. my mall only had the 32gb in stock if they had the 16 i may have bought one (but i just recently got the new ipod touch) so check you verizon store it is a unadvertised special at all verizon stores. good luck.

Thanks again everyone. So I think I definelty want and Ipad if I had to chose between the two, but now I have another question. For those of you who have the 3G is it really worth it? Most places we go have WIFI, but it is limited time use, but we find we rarely if at all use that, but at the same time I think it would be nice to have the availablity to have it if we wanted it. Say while driving to whereever we are going (we always drive to disney and it's 14 hours of just driving), or have internet while at disney to get any last minute news.

For those of you who have 3G do you use it often, and those of you who don't, do you miss it?

For me it is because I don't have a smart phone with Internet access. This winter it was great to sit at some of my sons all day sporting events and be able to check facebook, read emails, check disboards and even find local restaurants or directions. Now if you have an iPhone or similar then you could probably save and not do the 3G.

We bought my iPad at the apple store online. It was refurbished. I had the option with AT&T to choose (2) month to month plans. I chose the smaller data plan...I think it's about $15 a month. If you don't cancel it then you will get billed month to month. But you can cancel and resign at anytime. So far I have been paying every month and the smaller plan has worked great for me. You can check how much data you have used too.

An important note is that only the 3G model has GPS. I know for me I use the GPS on my iPad more than the actual 3G. It's great for finding places to eat (more detailed than phones or GPS units), using Google Maps, finding alternative routes around accidents, etc. and has been a very useful tool for me. Many iPad apps make use of GPS if you have it. For me the GPS alone is worth the extra $129 you spend for the 3G version of whatever size you plan on getting.

Edit: Also, if you have the 3G model you have GPS even if you don't pay for 3G data so you can get the 3G model, never pay to use 3G but have the GPS built in.

One other "also" as a note to iPad 1 owners. If you want the iPad 2 you can trade your existing one in at Target as credit toward the iPad 2. For my 32gig 3G for instance Target will give me $320 toward the iPad 2. I haven't really used much disk space on it so I plan on dropping to the 16gig 3G iPad 2. After the exchange credit I'll be able to "upgrade" for only $329.

Didn't realize that! Good information :thumbsup2

i know you already decided on the ipad - but have you listed all the things you want to use it for? and do you already use apple products? the ipad is AWESOME, but you can get the same or more functionality per buck with one of those small laptops - and they are just as portable and can use flash. soooo not as cool though. :) IMHO

i love apple products - but i have a friend who WON her ipad and both her and her husband hate it (sacre bleu - i cannot imagine). But i think it is because they are not used to apple products.

onto the 3G question - how often are you going to be using it outside of your house? that will tell you right there if it is worth it! my dmil uses her iphone when she is not at the house - so just the wifi is fine on her ipad.

Also - I have no issue reading on my iphone kindle app. I just read 6 diana gabaldon books on it (and they are fairly long). My mom has both the kindle and the iphone and she loves her kindle but also loves the portability of the iphone. She is fine with the small screen too - i think you just get used to it.

Happy purchasing!! You really cannot go wrong either way!!!

My ipad is wifi only and if I ever upgrade, it will be another wifi one. I have an iphone with the tethering plan so I don't need the 3 g.
