If I take my iPad on the Plane, will I be able to use it? I am not paying for wifi access but my books are on my iPad. I could use my iphone as a hot spot but not sure if I can do that either. I haven't flown in almost 5 years so I am not sure what is acceptable when it comes to technology.

1) Yes you can use your Ipad on the plane...
From when you board until the boarding door is shut
From when the plane gets above 10,000 feet until it gets below 10,000 feet (about 5-10 minutes after take off to about 10 minutes before landing)
2) You can NOT use your iphone as a hot spot. The iphone needs to be in Airplane mode from when the boarding door is shut until you land. It needs to be OFF from when the boarding door is shut and while below 10,000 feet.

You can use both your phone and your iPad fully while on the ground. Once the door is closed, the flight attendants tell you to turn off all your electronic devices. Once you clear a certain altitude (10,000 feet, I think) you will be able to turn back on your devices but only in "airplane mode" so you may not use your phone as a hot spot. You will be able to use your devices until the final decent when you will be asked to turn them off again. You may turn them back on and use them fully once you land, even if you are still taxiing.

I am glad we can use our phones, my DD 14 would drive me crazy if she couldn't listen to her music. LOL:rotfl2:

prepare your daughter that it will have to be off during take off and landing. it can be some time if plane is delayed on ground before take off, just sitting on taxiway

Some airlines will not allow phone usage, even if it is in airplane mode. I know when we flew Air Tran in December, they stated more than once that cell phones were not allowed at all.

That is quite odd, all airlines allow cell phone use during flight in airplane mode. Perhaps you misunderstood the announcement. AirTran offers wi-fi on their planes, which can be used with your cell phone:

I haven't run into this - flying at least once a month on several different airlines including Air Tran and SWA! You do need to have the phone in airplane mode and can't use electronics until the announcement as pp's have mentioned but I used my phone and/or Ipad each and every time I fly.

The last two times I've flown, I've listened to my iPod. Next time, I'll stock up on magazines to read.
