So I cannot figure out what to get my father for Christmas, and I am now thinking of getting him and my mom an iPad as a joint gift. If I go this route it would most likely be their Christmas and Birthday gifts (60th bday in Dec & Jan) due to the hefty price tag. I have the iPad 2, but do not know any information regarding the newer models (retina display, or the mini). Does anyone have any personal experience regarding these models? What are the main differences? How small is the mini compared to the older iPads, not sure if they mini will be too small for my parents.

Lastly, I know there have been pretty good sales on the iPads this year that I missed out on, wondering if there are any this week anyone knows of.

Thanks for the help!

The Retina display model (iPad 4 [the iPad 3 was discontinued]) has a sharper screen than your iPad 2, and it has a faster processor. It has a five MP camera, and better WiFi connectivity. That's about it. They start at $499.

The iPad mini is a little bigger than a standard library book (about eight inches tall and four inches wide, only a few cm thick). Save the better camera and Siri, the iPad mini is a concentrated iPad 2 (same screen, and same processor*). *I believe. They start at $329 and 16 GB.

Note: The Mini might be too small if your parents have trouble seeing, but the Zoom feature under Accessibility might be able to help with that (zooms in on the screen with every single app).

In regards to the sales, I can't really help with that, as I don't pay much attention to the iPads. But, Apple has a Refurbished Store, and you can buy iPads there for about $40 off. They're basically new iPads (just redone with new internals).

Hope I didn't overload you with too much info there. That's as much as I can think of off the top of my head.

Go to the apple site and in the search box type "refurbished" if they have any refurbished ones available it will bring them up. They had iPods, and iPads last time I looked.

Apple has a Refurbished Store???
where?

Yep, as nonstopdisneymom said, it's in the online store on apple.com. You'll find it on the left sidebar after scrolling down a little bit. It'll say "Refurbished Macs" then "Refurbished iPads" or whatever underneath. I don't know the exact order, but that's what you'll find.

The only refurbed new Ipad's are the 3rd generation and not the new 4th generation ones with the faster processors. I just bought one of the refurbed 3rd generations and am considering returning it and buying a 4th generation. I really think that the faster processor is worth the extra money.

If you have a "Micro Center" store near you . They have deals on Apple Ipads -Limited ! Ipad 4 $459.99 , Ipad 3 $399.99 for 16gb, in-store Only!

Goto Microcenter.com for your nearest store

I purchased an Ipad 2nd Generation for my son back in November. I only paid $320 for it - refurbished. It works great, looks brand new, and my son loves it (got it for his birthday earlier this month).

Thanks for the heads up. I just bought the 32G Ipad 4th Gen. I'm going to return the refurb 3rd gen that I got from the Apple store. I'll be giving up storage in exchange for the better chip and faster Wifi for the same price.

My DH got us a 3rd generation with 32 GB on the Apple site for around 399.00 so we will have the storage capacity.

Walmart lowered the price of their IPad 3, 16gig, yesterday to $399. I read on Yahoo the big push was to get rid of all the IPad 2, and now the 3, so the 4's can start selling decently. Why? Because the 5 is being introduced soon. I am still using my IPad 1. It moves faster than my PC, never locks up. I don't have a camera on here, but that is what my digital camera is for. But I did notice my IPad is not compatible with some of the new Aps that are out there. How sad, 3 years old, and it works perfect for me.
