I am trying to find a card reader (for compact flash cards) for my iPad. Is there such an animal? If there is, I haven't been able to find one.
Thanks.

Nothing officially licensed, at least not yet. The Apple camera connection kit includes an SD reader, but the USB adapter also included is supposed to pick up the other card formats by connection to your camera. I'd check into compatibility with your particular camera model first though. A quick Google search for "ipad cf" found a gizmo from MIC Gadget that seems to offer more of what you're looking for. However, it's not licensed by Apple, so a future update could make it worthless.

I know I could buy the one from Apple to connect my camera, but it sure sucks battery power when you do that. I was hoping for just a card reader so I cold download onto it when I go overseas this fall....
Thanks. I did see the MIC gadget and I might try it.

I am ordering the one from Apple. I hope that my current card reader will fit in the USB port....
I'll let you know.

I recently read that you may need to use an external power supply to power the card reader in order for the iOS device to recognize the card.

Hummm. Where would you find an external power supply for a card reader?

Some readers have a jack to plug in an AC adapter. The other option is to use a self powered USB hub which would power the reader.

Never seen one like that. I'll have to do a bit more research looks like.
Thanks.

Since the largest of the iPads only has 64 GB (which has to hold all of your other stuff too) and with CF cards being as cheap as they are these days it might be easier just to buy a few extra cards.

Most USB reader are powered through the USB cable. The iPad with the camera connection kit and a USB card reader are the only things you need. I use it to back up my photos during the trip.

Thanks. I have the connection kit ordered and will give it a whirl.

I have used my IPad SD card reader successfully, but I find it awkward to get the photos off of the IPAD when I get home. I have tried to use the USB adapter with a card reader but the IPad complains that it draws too much power. It might work with a powered USB extension and the card reader plugged in to that, but I haven't tried that. Mmmm...I'll have to try that for my camera with a MicroSD card.

Here is the info I was referencing earlier. iOS 4.2 dropped the USB power rendering some cards and readers unusuable.

Was this reverted in 4.3.x?

You can use the sd reader to upload into the photoshop app with gives you limited editing and 2gb online storage for free. You can by more storage then when you get home you can download to your pc/mac into your photoshop or PS element. Another plus is you can upload RAW file or jpeg. There are other apps that offer storage as well.
You could also upload to flickr as well.

Do you mean put the photoshop app on the ipad?
I am confused.

If you're uploading images, especially RAW files, make sure you don't pass the bandwidth cap for your service. It's the main reason I don't upload mine when I'm on vacation.

I received the camera connection kit today. I tried to hook my Belkin card reader directly to the ipad. It said "not enough power". Bummer.
Guess I will just have to take LOTS of cards with me to UAE and Thailand this fall...
