Iowa court rules same-sex couples can marry!

It's sure nice to hear bits of good news like this. Helps from getting to bummed after hearing about Amendment 2 hitting the ballot here in Florida.

Thanks for posting!

And a New York State Appeals Court has ruled that the state must recognize out of state marriages. For Buffalo residents this means that couples can now take the 5 minute ride across the Peace Bridge or Rainbow Bridge (yup, that's the real name of one of our bridges!), get married in Canada and then be legally married here as well. These are hopeful signs and every small step helps.

Good to see Good News on this front (from both Iowa and New York). Thanks for posting:)

Sorry to be a spoiler, but unless something has happened again recently, that ruling was overturned within days. Sad to say. I haven't heard any new rulings made, but I will see what I can find out.

Does it specify foreign as well as out of state? My concern would be that while say a Connecticut marriage is covered by NY's interpretation of "full faith and credit" a Canadian one might not be. Granting that recognition to another state's laws doesn't guarantee that it will be done for another country.

Not trying to be a killjoy, I just hate to see people get their hopes up on something so important and then have them dashed.

Yes, Canadian marriages are covered. In fact the case was based on a Rochester couple that married in Canada and were denied health care benefits for the one of them as a spouse. They sued to have the state recognize their marriage so they could get benefits as a married couple.

I have to say Iowa is one of the last states I thought would be helping this movement, but good for them. If it holds in the supreme court, they will get +1 vote of confidence from me

It is very unlikely that your union will be recognized by the Federal Government or the State of FLorida.
