We just purchased a timeshare at Marriott Horizons in Orlando. I was told by our sales rep that we could not exchange our week for another hotel within 50 miles of our home resort. Is this true?

Not strictly true. But, there are some Orlando-area resorts you cannot exchange into, and all DVC resorts are among them.

Edited to clarify: the WDW DVC resorts are out. As littlestar below writes, you can exchange into HHI and VB.

You should be able to trade into any of the Marriotts in Orlando with Marriott Horizons.

The only DVC's you could trade into would be Disney's Hilton Head Island or Disney's Vero Beach resort.

We adore Horizons - it's so cute and love the pastel beach theming and great pools with slides.

Is it possible to do a personal exchange. For example - if a DVC owner were interested in staying at Marriott and we were interested in staying at a DVC resort is there a way to do a private exchange?

It is possible, but I would think you'd have a hard time finding an owner to take you up on it. DVC owners bought DVC for a reason, and even if they wanted to stay in Horizons instead, they'd probably be better off renting out their points, and using the cash proceeds to rent Horizons from an owner.

For example, right now there is a 2BR unit for rent at redweek.com, for Christmas week, for $1500. That would just barely cover a studio at OKW that same week. What's more, another Chistmas 2BR Horizons week is listed for only $1150.

Just out of curiosity, when did you buy this week? If you are still in your recission period, and you bought directly from Marriott, perhaps you should rescind and learn more about what this ownership would and would not be good for. If you decide that it would meet your needs, you can almost certainly get the same deal from Marriott again, or you might even do better on the resale market.

Horizons is a lovely resort that is very highly regarded, but your questions lead me to believe it may not meet your expectations.
