interstate 10 ??

We live on the arkansas oklahoma border on I40. We have always driven to Nashville and headed south from there through Chattanouga on to Atlanta. Has anyone gone the southern route I10 , I beleive? Do you prefer it.
We have never been to the extreme southern border of Mississippi, etc.
Our trip is in December this year, and we thought that perhaps we need an alternate plan in case of weather problems.
Any recommendations or experiences would be appreciated.

We live in North Mississippi(6 hours from the coast) and I prefer going through Atlanta. While it doesn't seem like a lot of difference distance wise. I perfer the highway travel on 20 to INT 75(in Atlanta). If you go through Mississippi you have to go through a few towns along the way(INT 55 to HWY 49). You don't want to stay on Int. 55 all the way to the coast you end up too far west.

Int. 75 from Atlanta gives you three lanes compared to the normal 2 lanes on Int. 10.
