I know there are WIFI locations and internet service in the cabins. However, I have family staying in a campsite and dont know if there is internet service available. Any info is appreciated

You can get wired internet through the cable connection at the campsites. If you need a cable modem, you can borrow one from the front desk. They will put a deposit for it on your credit card, which will be refunded when you turn it back in.

Same WDW internet service as everywhere else - $9.95 per 24 hours.

More info from AllEars...

Does Fort Wilderness have Internet access?

Yes. Like the other resorts, Disney offers wireless Internet at three hot spots and broadband cable at the sites and cabins. The three WIFI spots at Fort Wilderness are Reception Outpost, Meadows, and Crockett's Tavern. Cost is $4.99 for the first 60 minutes or $9.95 for 24 contiguous hours. Technical Support is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, by calling the vendor, Smart City, at their help desk: 407-938-HELP. Both the Cabins and Preferred campsites can also rent a cable modem kit to have high speed Internet access. A Local Area Network (LAN) cable is required. The necessary modem kit is rented at the Front Desk in the Outpost. A $125 refundable deposit is required and the kits should be reserved in advance or will most likely not be available. Cost is $9.95 for 24 contiguous hours. Dial-up access is also available at the Reception Outpost.

thanks

That is what I thought and this was far easier than looking it up myself.

my laptop has pro/set wireless and most loops i can pick up linksys and get free internet.

Most of the time when I travel for business, I get better speeds using "free Wifi" than from the hotel's paid system.

There are also several reports that local McDonalds, including the one by AK, have free Wifi. But, Canadian Guy said it wasn't available last December.

I normally use my 3G wireless card and a Cradlepoint MBR1000 wireless router to feed my internet habit, my Slingbox and my son's Xbox habit. I've found that the 3G signal here at the campgrounds is less then average. I believe that Disney doesn't have or allow any cell towers on the site.

I dealt with it for a day, and then went up to the front desk and got one of those modem kits. Easy to hook up if you can read the directions. Its what i do for a living so no sweat.

I hooked it up to my Cradlepoint router and was able to feed everything again.

I just can't make my streaming web cam work now because I am behind Disney's firewall and the access I need isnt available.

I haven't seen too many open wireless access points. I'm in the 1200 loop and only saw a couple. All were secure which is preferred.

The could spend some money and put more wireless access in the campgrounds but I'm sure with the current economy, its last on their list.

I am heading down for a week in June and staying in a cabin. Unfortunately for me, at night I have an online video chat/lecture class for summer school.
This is a VERY important class that I must pass.
Therefore, I don't want to try to find a public hotspot. I need some quiet where I can follow and take notes. In other words, I need to connect from my cabin.
Do you think there will be any problem with the connection speed if I rent a kit from Disney for my stay?
I had thought about one of those internet wireless connection cards. But I am not sure they can work at a high enough speed for my online chat. And it sounds like coverage for those may be shotty.

I have a sprint card and use it at the fort on every trip. I have even lent it to certain campers in need of checking in on their schoolwork online. You won't have a problem with the speed at Disney nor will you have a problem with the current set of air cards that are out. My card is 2yrs old and does just great in chat.

I have an AT&T card and have had excellent coverage in most of the places we've stayed. We're heading to the Keys next which I hope brings better coverage. Perhaps AT&T doesnt work as well as Verizon, etc. My uncle who works here told me today that the only cell tower on the property is over by Wild Kingdom. My iphone has good service but no luck on solid, semi fast 3G service. We should be outside anyway. Except for today with the rain but its nice out now.

Good luck with cell service in the Keys. I use Verizon and visit Key West every year. I have average service there at best...the kind where you have to stand on balconies facing north and east to get good clear coverage. Could be the phone. Could be the service. Never took the time to find out since when it comes down to it, for me, it didn't matter. I still had to stand outside to talk.

If you are in a cabin, you won't need to rent the kit, it is already permanantly mounted in the cabin.

Maybe the day you have your online class, you could buy the Ft. Wilderness Internet. For $10.00 you'll get quiet and privacy for your lecture in your cabin. No sense in buying your own wireless card, with a 2 year contract, and a minimum $60.00 per month fee for the next two years. :thumbsup2
