Internet personas

it's just funny to see posters who have one profession on one section of the board and then a complete different one in another....and then sometimes they end up getting caught up in all their lies!

I know someone who uses "alter egos" to start fights with people on message boards. Apparently, she doesn't want to tarnish her own pristine reputation (such as it is), so she invents other personalities with different names, usually male, to do her dirty work.

(She admitted this to a friend, so that's how I know it's her).

Talk about the need for a life.

I don't like to have babies and tell:goodvibes But since I am amongst friends let's just say it starts with a George and ends with a Clooney.

And don't forget your consort. ;)

I understand what you mean, but at the same time these types of conversations make me nervous. There are several things in my life that are a bit unusual, and I always worry that people will think I'm making it up, I'm not. That's just who I am. That's why I tend to give people the benefit of the doubt. Now, if you try to sell me a bridge in Brooklyn, I might be suspicious.

Some of us have strange RL's, we can't help it. I think we are talking more about the people who have had every job, who have done everything anyone has ever done, but they have done it faster, smarter and better. After while you just KNOW that unless they are 101 years old there is no way they could have done all that in their life.

Just because I dated Brad Pitt and I am a decorated fighter pilot that has quadruplets named Marlene, Carlene, Darlene, and Bob doesn't make me a liar.

They are identical, right?;) Girls, maybe boys.

My babysitter's daughter plays many parts on the internet. I think she has 4 or 5 myspace places. In reality, she is 22, uneducated, unmarried mom of 2. I don't think any of her internet people fall in those categories. She is a sad gal, for sure.

I think there are people (and even notice this in real life) who just have the need to be "one up" on EVERYTHING.......it doesn't matter what the topic is, they've done it and done it better! :thumbsup2 But in reality their life doesn't reflect any of this...........:confused3 . My DH can even be really bad about doing this when talking to someone and I'm sitting there thinking.......

This is just bizarre. If the people on those boards bother her that much, why not just tell it like it is to them instead of hiding behind a different name/identity? Or sending them PM's so everyoine else can't see her complaints/criticisms? Wouldn't it bo too much work keeping up alter egos???

I think my life is pretty boring, but I've been accused of making things up because no one could know so many people(if I chime in and say something/anything has happened to me or someone I know I get accused of making it up)/live in such a horrible school district( although I had links to prove it) etc. Luckily either those posters never returned after being banned, or they are behaving now.

My other internet persona is SHE-RA PRINCESS OF POWER.

Which is more disturbing? Somebody embellishing the details of their lives on-line? Or somebody with way-too-much time on their hands starting a blog about said embellisher?

Personally, I think the blog creator has way more serious issues than the liar.

I bolded my choice. :)

Country singer Brad Paisley has this hilarious song called "Online" about this very subject. It's a great song, and pretty much hits the nail on the head of the online persona thing.:)

I thought of this song when I read the thread title. Heard it on the way to work. Now I'll have to go on YouTube & watch the video... it's a hoot! :cool1:

I believe you. Brad is good at making multiples.;)

I consider my internet persona to be kind and caring. In RL, I'm a :maleficen .

:rotfl2:

I know...I know and she sings like a "bird". :confused3 Just guessing.

Why do people come off as something they aren't. You know the type. Been there done that on everything. Making them the center of attention and build themselves up?

I frequent many message boards (yes, I have no life) and it just astounds me. Some are just so more obvious than others and it seems each post gets further and further out there.

Please don't misunderstand me, I am not referring to anyone directly. Its just something I've been seeing more and more of all across the net.

Am I the only one that comes across this? If so maybe I need new places to frequent.

I don't think the reasons are that much different from the reasons some people do it IRL. I think they feel unimportant and powerless for the most part with their life. So when I see some posters here getting caught in their lies, I try not to find it too amusing.

The internet gives some people a chance to feel important in a way they don't in their actual lives. That's very sad, but I do think it's true. I try to remind myself that's it's probably all they've got.

Personally, I don't live in a mansion (or even an exclusive gated community), I don't drive a $100,000 car (or several) and I don't have millions in the bank. On the other hand, I have a family I love (but they sometimes make me nuts!), a comfortable home (nope, it's not even paid for!), a job I'm proud of and enjoy doing (again, sometimes makes crazy!), friends and pets I adore (though they sometimes make me crazy too!). I even have, gasp!, a bit of credit card debt and sometimes I don't even pay my balance in full every month.

The Dis was my first venture onto any internet message board, so my join date reflects my total time on any board. In many ways, it's been a real eye opening experience.

No "persona" here. What you see is what you get. I stand by everything I have ever said on the DIS and have no need to hide behind multiple personas. Plus I have a hard enough time keeping my real life straight, I don't know how I could do it if I was a DIS Sybil.
