Hi,

Can anyone help please?

I have a PC with a Broadband connection. How do I go about connecting a different computer (Mac) to my Broadband connection? Is this even possible, or can I go direct into my phone line another way?

Any help appreciated :)

Thanks

Karen

It depends on what connection you have. If it is a single broadband modem then you can only connect to one PC/Mac at a time. You could attach the Mac through the "telephone" modem and then have two computers on line at the same time.

The other option is to have a router. However, the main computer that is connected to your broadband modem would need to be switched on for the other computer to connect.

The third option is to buy a modem router. With mine I can have up to 4 computers connected at the same time (very useful when I have to work from home, DW "needs" to connect to EBay, and DD wants to play games on Nick)!

We have a wireless g router (but need a d...(faster)) and It works well, especially if you want to do a laptop too.

We have a NetGear router connected to our main PC, which two laptops wirelessly connect to. I have no idea how it works though!!

Richard - we have a router connected to a PC, but the PC does not need to be switched on in order for the laptops to be able to connect to it....

:wizard:

We have a wireless router (Belkin) and 3 PC's and a laptop all run off it. There is no PC connected to the router directly. Go wireless its really easy to set up:)

I am really tempted Michelle but I've not got a laptop so I'm not sure how much benefit it would be at the moment (but I probably don;t understand what benefits there are, LOL)

If I knew I was safe from DH's prying eyes, I would post here that a laptop will be bought soon ;) but as he might read this post I will say nothing :teeth:

Ooops, looks like you were rumbled Karen ;)

DFIL has just installed one of these at home, but my laptop (with Centrino wireless) won't pick it up, does anyone know how I get it to search for the connection? DFIL's laptop uses a card to do it so I know the signal is there for sure!!

It could be a number of things..

Is your wireless connection definitely enabled on the laptop??

Is it set to run in infrastructure mode?

Are you sure the wireless router and your laptop are using the same standard i.e 802.11 b/g??

What o/s are you running on the laptop?

You missed one Alan!;)

Does he have the WEP encryption setup because if he does you won't be able to pick it up because this will stop you from doing so since it's whole purpose is to prevent people "stealing" your bandwidth.

It crossed my mind but I thought I would stick to the more basic stuff first. :)

It might also be restricted by MAC address of course ;)

Fundamentally though for us to consider diagnosing the problem we need a bit more information about the hardware involved and how it is configured.

when i asked our IT guys at work they said that when it can't find the work wireless connection ( I use wireless in th eoffice all the time) that the computer would search for any other available networks, but when it tried to search it said that there were none available. Dfil says that he hasn't put any incription on the system, but I will check that later.

Also I was trying to access the Belkin thing through the windows wireless software, should i be using any belkin software?

Apart from that I have all the usual software on the lap top, but have Ipass connect and voloview too if they may affect it?

Thanks for the help! :flower:
