I am having some issues with my IE. It keeps crashing when I try to download something from my email (but the download works fine when I open it on Chrome or Firefox). Certain webpages don't open. Unfortunately, I need to keep IE as some of the websites I need only open in IE. I was thinking about uninstalling it and then re-installing it somehow, is there any way to do this? Can I remove IE like I would any other program and then just download it?

Did you try rebooting?

I've found the quickest & easiest way to fix IE problems is to do a System Restore to an earlier date when it was working. If that doesn't work, try a Windows Update.

If you have Win XP or higher, there is no way to uninstall then reinstall IE.

I don't know when the problems started, since I don't usually use IE, I prefer Google Chrome. Unfortunately, this particular website I need only supports IE. I use Vista, so I guess I can't uninstall IE. I might try a Windows Update, but I thought that only fixed Windows issues? Or is IE a part of Windows?

There is a specific security setting in IE to enable file downloads. Try going in to 'custom level' in security settings and changing the option for Automatic prompting for file downloads...

IE is part of Windows from Win XP and later.

Are you sure it isn't just that website is crashing? It might not be your IE. I hate those websites that only supports one particular browser. They are usually very low budget and very low tech, filled with a lot of bugs.

It's definitely not the website, it's crashing on other websites as well that are supported by other browsers as well. And when I tried to download a document from my email, I got a message that IE has stopped working and needs to close. Other websites also just cause it to crash.

Did you try to run a repair from your OS CD?

That's a bit more high tech than I know how to do. I'm thinking about bringing my laptop into tech support at school on Friday, maybe they can figure it out. I mean, it's not like I'm trying to access an illigitament (sp?) websites, my school email and a question bank from the school's library website. So annoying.

I don't think that you can uninstall IE because I think that it is an integral part of Windows.
But I would recommend this Add On for Firefox: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1419 . When you download it and use it, it coverts the webpage that you are viewing into IE (or something like that?). For the couple of pages that I go to that don't seem to like Firefox, I simply use this Add On.

Good Luck!

Oh wait! Now that you explained it, that happened to me a few times. Bring up an IE window. At the top, click on Tools. Click on Manage Add-ons. Disable things (one at a time until you figured out what it is,) like SunJava, if you added any Google Toolbar thingies, and any unnecessary things you my have downloaded.

I reformatted my whole computer once because IE was crashing & freezing. (It was the only browser I had, so I was out Internet completely. Later, I found out it was something Google downloaded. And all I had to do was turn it off so that it wouldn't keep interacting with IE. :sad2:

a couple weeks ago, I had to do a System Restore and then uninstall the latest Google Updater, as it would automatically re-download the update, without letting me refuse it. It kept screwing up my system. This is the second time Google messed with my IE.

Another time, it was the SunJava or Java add-ons. Another time, it was some Adobe add-on. :sad2:

Still didn't work. I pretty much disabled all the add ons, and it is still crashing. My IE is possessed.

I never allow add-ons to IE to load. I need IE for too many work apps, and some of them mess with app functionality.

Sorry to hear that you are still struggling with this, monkey68. Take it to a PC repair shop or call the manufacturer for help. Good Luck! :surfweb:

I have no clue, I have AVG installed on my computer as my virus protection, not sure if it comes with a firewall.

It's not easy to help since there may be quite a few combinations to your problem. Here is a known problem, could it be affecting you? I'd start with THIS first.

Since the release of Windows Vista, Microsoft has been aware of a problem affecting downloads using their web browser. Internet Explorer in Windows Vista will hang after it downloads a file, and begins to copy that file to the folder location. The same problem does not exist if Run is chosen rather than Save Target As when downloading a file....

nd, it sounds similar to my problem, but I can't save a file or run it when I'm downloading. Either way, it will just crash. I'm thinking about bringing in my laptop to tech support in school tomorrow, but if they can't help me, who would i call next? The manufacturer of my computer?

Well, the PC Maker will not help you, it’s MS Vista problem.

I would set a Restore Point first.

Then I would Reset Internet Explorer settings like it says there.

If still no go, I’d try to download the Internet Download Manager, you have link and explanation on how to do it HERE: almost all the way at the bottom of the page.

Try these two yourself. You can always Restore your previous setting since you did set the Restore point, OK?

Give it a shot.

I have AVG too. I had to disable the AVG Safe Search. You may have downloaded it along with the antivirus. It works in the background to alert you if a web link is a potential threat. It S-L-O-W-E-D my webpages from loading so much while it checked them, (or something.) It also made my PC fan turn on more than usual as it was using up extra resources. I also uninstalled the AVG toolbar.

I tried that, didn't help.
